Engine type is misleading

Engine type is misleading
My engine code says D16Y8, which according to the sticky post (https://www.hondacivicforum.com/m_131941/tm.htm) it's: D16Y8 1.6L SOHC VTEC 96+ Civic EX 127hp.
Here is the part that gets me.. Myvalve cover doesn't say VTEC on it like all the VTECengine pics I've seen. And the post claims I have 127 HP, but when it was purchased it was labeledas 140hp.
Here are the pics of my engine
It's a 2000Civic EX, I bought brand new in 2000.
(EDIT: In my Haynes manual, it says digits 4, 5, & 6 of my VIN designate line/body/engine codes. Mine says EJ8, so the manual says it's a 3 or a 4 door! I definitely only have 2 doors. Very weird)
What's up here?
Thanks !!

RE: Engine type is misleading
hey, thanks for the speedy reply! Well, that makes me feel better. So does my engine have the 140hp the sticker said, or does it fall low with 127hp like the engine spec post?
Also my Haynes manual has been wrong on several things. Check out it's distributor wiring specs:
The right pic is how it's setup now and running decent (bad idle problems but I will save that for another post). If I set it up like the manual it just starts up and dies. *shrug* I'm not reading the manual wrong, am I?
Thanks!!!

RE: Engine type is misleading
I would tend to believe the 140 hp found on the label when the car was purchased.
Go here for the factory service manual:

RE: Engine type is misleading
that probably is a d16y8 and thevalve coverhas justbeenswaped, people do that all the time when they street race cause theydon't wantthereopponent toknow it's a vtec. And as to your hp problem the best way to find out what your exact hp is to just stick it on a dyno because depending on your engines history no piece of paper is going to tell you your exact hp

RE: Engine type is misleading
from my understanding, the SOHC VTEC found in the EX models(like the one I have), DONT say "VTEC" on the valve cover. However, the DOHC VTEC found in the SI models say "VTEC" on the valve cover.
If you have the d16y8, then I believe it's rated at 127hp

RE: Engine type is misleading
Ahh okay. Thanks for all the information guys, and the service manual. Hopefully that manual will bridge the gap between the ambiguities of the Hayne's manual and what is actually going on.
At least now I wont have so many ladies fighting to get in my civic knowing that it's only a 127hp (the 140 drives 'em wild)
