whoa! theft like that should be illegal!

$3800 for an automatic trans for a 12 year old car?!
This is exactly the type of transmission that people throw in the trash when they swap out for a manual transmission. You could pick up a low mileage used one for just a few hundred dollars.

My daughter drives this car. If it were mine, the manual option would be high on the list. The Honda dealer has a 2002 LX, manual with 119K miles listed for just under $8000. This influenced me to have it repaired.

I'm not saying to swap it to manual. You could buy a replacement automatic transmission for a few hundred dollars. By the way, 2002 era Civics sell all day on Craigslist and private sites for ~$3000 all day.

I suggest you stop getting hung up on stealership prices. They always double or triple their prices at your expense.

2001 Honda Civic automatic 139k miles, great condition - $3700
2001 honda civic

2000 Honda Civic Ex 77k miles, automatic - asking $4500
2000 honda civic ex

2001 Civic autotragic 107k miles- asking $3800
01 honda civic 107k

I'm not sure why super-inflated car for sale at a dealership influenced any decision you would ever make. You could buy another whole car for less than a $3800 transmission repair bill.

I would avoid a 2001 with an auto, those transmissions are made of glass. If you search the web it was the only year they had those kinds of problems. A 2002 would be fine.

Can another year trans (2002 and later) be used in the 01? That would be the best repair. Probably could get a used unit at a bone yard for 3-500 dollars, put it in yourself it will take you a day.

My '99 has an original auto trans with 230k on it. All I do is keep the fluid red.
