I have a nice little problem and I barely know anything about cars, so sorry if I'm not as helpful with the vocabulary.

The problem is that when I'm driving along, sometimes the engine will stutter. Like the gas is not getting to the engine correctly. I tend to barely use the gas, but when i need to give it gas, it happens more often.

Now any gear I'm using will not let the car get above 3500 rpm. I've been told its a safety feature to make the car not explode. wee?

When its at a stop light it goes between 1500 and 1000rpm, but never stalls.

All the levels i can see are in acceptable ranges (between the min/max lines) and oil is half way. (its been a few months since i got an oil change and 3-4000 miles on synthetic oil that was purple?)

I know this could be a bunch of issues, but I was just wondering what people's best guesses were.

And prolly the killer in this, I've been running like this for months now but it hasn't gotten any worse or better.

Make sure your check engine light has not been disconnected (common on used cars). It should come on when you turn the key on but don't start. If the light stays on while driving, you need to get the computer scanned to see what the problem might be. Most parts stores such as Advance, Autozone, O'reileys, will do it for free.

The spark plugs and maybe the fuel filter should be replaced as a general "tune up" measure.

The timing belt could have skipped also. How old is your timing belt?
