97 civic gas gauge stuck on full
The gas gauge went to full and stayed there. Car gets about 300 miles to full tank and used trip odometer for last two tanks of gas. If I disconnect the sending unit will the gauge stay on full? Is there a position the gauge should go to with no power applied to it? What is the quickest way to determine if it's the gauge or the sending unit?
Thanks,
Ken

Disconnecting the sending unit should make the gauge go to empty when you turn the key on. If it doesn't, either the gauge is bad or the wire from the gas tank to the gauge has a short to ground.
The gauge is designed to stay on the last reading while the key is off.

It sounds like the sending unit it bad. It can't be the gauge because it would just show empty if that was bad.

I disconnected the sending unit, turned the key on and it stayed at full. Removed the instrument cluster and the face piece. All of the guages fall back down when raised and released manually except the gas gauge, it had resistance and never moved but moved more freely after working it a little. I put it on empty and reinstalled the cluster, turned the key back on and the gauge climbed at a better rate then in the past and stopped at just below the full mark and there is a full tank of gas. Will run it a while and see what happens but stopping by and looking at a new cluster today.
