98 civic gx white caked on o2 and clogged cat
I've been having problems stalling at idle when diving a lot on the freeway (hot).
have a P0420 code for some time. changed the manifold/cat. i shine a flashlight in to one end and i can't see light out the other. an at the top of the cat, peeking in the o2 sensor hole i can see white chalky carp covering the honeycomb. this white stuff was all over upstrm o2 sensor as well.
after replacing the cat performance was much better but on a hot day and 20 + miles on the freeway it stared stalling again at idle. i just replace the upstream o2 and cleared the ecu but one drove it a few miles and P1381 popped up.
i havent' diven it enought to see if P0420 will come back.
what is the white stuff? silicone contamination?
where is that coming from?
my coolant level is fine.
i've added maybe a pint to the resivior over 70 k miles.

ok, put in some freeway miles. P420 hasn't come back but P1381 keeps popping up and my gas milage is way down. i've only gone 20 miles but by the needle i can see the milage is way low. hopefuilly tomorrow i can drive and refuel to calculate.

Someone like mk378 would know better than me, but if it's chalky, that's probably ash, which is usually caused by additives in gasoline, etc. Are you buying no-name gas, or adding anything to the fuel system? What octane are you using?
In reading up on the P1381 code, it looks like it's typically caused by a bad ground wire on either the alternator or the distributor, so you may want to remove those and clean them.

it a natural gas vehicle. it runs on methane. i'm wondering if there is something the providers are doing in theirs delivery or storage system. they are maybe using silicone sealer or something.
I'll clean those contact, thx! but i did notice the last time the CEL came on the engine dipped so i might be for real

Oh wow - totally missed that, sorry. Actually, I never realized there was a CNG version of the Civic. Just out of curiosity, was it a California thing, or are you outside the States?
