Default Drove with E-brake on, can I just adjust tension?

Hi all, thanks in advance for any useful information you offer.

I drove around with the parking brake on for a good long while. Now, I can pull the handle all the way up with no effect.

To repair it, can I just tighten up the tension on the cables, via the connector between the parking brake and the cable? or do I need to take a look at the brake pads and see what was going on?

A more general question -- does the E-brake have a separate brake pad, or does it just engage the normal brake? 1990 DX.

I'm going to look at it myself this afternoon, but I thought I'd try to gather some info first.

Thanks again
