Default Good OBD II software recommendations?

I bought one of those ELM327 OBDII to USB adapters a while back hoping that I could use it with some Windows software and get live data, and maybe even ABS and transmission codes. The software that came with it has a few features but nothing like I want.

Does anyone know of some software that has all the capabilities of a high end scanner but doesn't cost $3000+?

I've seen stuff online but don't know if it's worth what they're charging for it.

If anyone thinks it would be better to just buy a dedicated scanner from Sears or something share those suggestions too.
