Default ignition timing question

I recently checked the ignition timing on my 93 accord. Its a little diff than the civic, there is a plug that pulls out from the left front of the block, and you shoot the timing light in there.

My problem is that the red mark is not consistently in exactly the same spot, it wanders by about a millimeter on most flashes. is this ok, and if not, what might be the cause? the car starts/runs fine, I was only checking timing because I just got a gun at a yard sale.

Did you put the ECU in test mode? In normal mode, the ECU will vary the timing all over the place as part of its program to regulate idle speed.

no, i didnt, I thought that since I was just checking to see if it was on the red mark and didnt plan on any adjustments that i wouldnt have to short the connector. thanks a lot, I will try it again in test mode.
