Default Oil Dipstick

Have had my 97 Civic Ex for a few weeks and decided to change the oil, on the dipstick there are 2 holes thats it no full line, just two hole, is the top hole the full line? I put just about 4.25 qts in her and it was just above the top hole? ANY Help?

That's exactly it. Top hole is the full, bottom hole is the low.

Too much oil = bad, of course.

The above is correct.

Also, it should only take you a little more than 3.5 quarts to reach the full line when doing a drain/refill.

Keep in mind what when you read the dipstick marks, the car has to be level, so either all 4 points on jackstand or a lift, or the whole car on the ground. Also, when you first put oil in, it has to seep to the bottom before you can really read the level.

Having too much oil to a certain point will cause the crankshaft to sit in the oil and it will cause foaming of the oil which will cause prematurely blown oil seals in the block. You should drain some of the oil out. As a general rule of thumb I would never put in more than 4 quarts.

1.6L is just the displacement of the engine. It doesn't mean how much oil you need.

Keep in mind that there are many other factors, such as the size of the oil pan, etc.
