I'm about to replace the head gasket on my '94 Honda Civic Hatchback. I've got the Felpro kit from Advance auto, but I started reading threads indicating that the fiber graphite gaskets frequently fail, and that I should use an MLS (Multi Layer Steel) gasket instead. I've read posts indicating that the Y8 (D16Y8) head gasket is MLS, and will fit the D15B7 motor, but there are multiple types and brands of Y8 MLS head gaskets. I've also found MLS head gaskets specifically made for the D15B7, but they are significantly more expensive than the stock Y8 head gaskets. There is a TSB (TSB 97-047) that calls for a slightly different OEM gasket if the original head gasket is being replaced due to failure. Which head gasket can/should I use for my D15B7? OEM? Cometic? Felpro? Y8? B7? TSB recommended gasket?

Also, this is my first head gasket job. Should I bring the head into a shop to be resurfaced (shaved down)? Should I bring bring the head into a shop to have it cleaned? Should I plan on doing any valve adjustments ( I currently hear a slight ticking sound)?

I intend to replace the water pump, timing belt, and head studs during this process. Speed/horsepower is not important to me. Reliability and gas mileage are.

I wound up ordering a Felpro PermatorqueMLS headgasket (Part #9915 PT) designated for the D16Y8 motor ('96-'00 Honda Civic EX).
