V-tec Engage
Hello everyone, I was reading around and recently read Vtec on a 96 SI (ex) hits at 4500rpm. Today I was reading and getting allot of pages saying it engages at 5500rpm, which is it ? my cars stock so Vtec on a stock SOHC isent exactly the most noticeable thing but I've been under the impression its 4500rpm so whether or not I'm feeling it at 4500rpm or its just a placebo effect I'm not sure
Also been considering a Vtec controller, I know its usually the more popular thing for automatics, any thoughts ?

Vtec should engage on a stock ecu at 5500rpms. The fact you are automatic has nothing to do with those waste-of-time vtec controllers.
You will not "feel" vtec on a single cam. You probably might not hear it either. You can install a light to activate once vtec is activated if you want. Google to find a DIY if this site doesnt have one.
vtec is set at a specific rpm for a reason. Don't mess with it unless you start actual tuning work. For you to warranty any sort of tuning work, you would need to make more power. For you to make more power, you would need to swap to a manual transmission. You are a long ways away. Good luck with the build!

Both of us just said it is a waste of time and money. Nothing is changed if you have a manual as far as a vtec controller goes. I don't think we misread anything. You never said you were manual, just something about automatics

Ok thanks for the advice guys! and no you are right I made a statement that sorta implies I have a standard but doesent directly say it,so sorry for the mix up. I'm surprised ppl even bother with the honda-matics to be honest.

So on the way home today, armed with proper knowledge, I was able to hear and feel Vtec engaging at 5500rpm, and I do understand its not warp speed especially with a SOHC but my main concern was I thought I was hearing/feeling it sometimes at 4500rpm and not others so wondered if vtec was maybe shorting, but now that I know it engages at 5500 it seems to be working everytime just fine. thanks again guys!
