It fell out when I took off the lower front engine cover...

looks similar to the clips on the air box.

This piece is about 3/8 wide and about 1 inch long...

Thanks, but it is not like that. It does not have a cut-out on one end and an "s" hook on the other.

I think it has something to do with keeping the sensor wires away from the moving parts, but I've never had exactly that model.

Part #16 may be of interest to you in another one of your posts about your timing belt job.
