Default Windshield washer / wiper not working

I have a 97 LX and the windshield washer and wiper don't work. Wipers work OK, but when the lever is pulled towards the driver to actuate nothing happens. I'm new to this civic so not sure if the wipers automatically start and or should I only be expecting the washer to work. Any leads to start the fault finding would be appreciated.

If you hear the pump running (you may need to be outside the car to hear it) but nothing comes out, the tubing could be pinched or disconnected, or the nozzles clogged (or of course the tank is empty, but I assume you already checked that). If you don't hear anything at all, check for power at the pump motor. I think you have to take the bumper off.

The wipers won't start automatically when you wash. You have to push the lever down as a separate action to make it wipe.

Thanks., I'll double check on the motor running but could hear anything. At least I know the wipers don't come on automatically.
