Welcome to the forum. The D series motor has no potential unless you boost, supercharge, or use nitrous. If you cant afford any of those I would work on the suspension then.

What is the main purpose of this car? daily driver, drag, auto-x, road race, show? The end use of the car would dictate the direction you should go in.

A properly built/tuned turbo car will be reliable, something that is slapped together with junkyard parts under the old oak tree may have issues down the road. One thing to consider when doing a turbo build is getting a set of lower compression forged pistons. Most piston manufactures make a turbo specific application with a beefier ring land and they can be had for a reasonable price. Also I would consider getting a set of Eagle rods, they will hold about anything you can get out of a SOHC and usually run in the $300 range. I guess all I am saying is if you don't have the money/time to build it right, how can you built it twice?
