would it make a difference if I went with a set of 17's as opposed to the 16's I've heard that you can start to lose performance at this size but I was wondering if the change is really that noticable being that it is a daily driver and if a set of 17's wouldn't look even a little better.

I think almost everyone would agree that 17's would look better, and they should be fine. The rim size won't really start to affect the performance until you hit 18's.

look at the weight of the rims, thats very important. try to stay under about 17 pounds each, thats where performance will start to fall off badly. also, get lower profile tires for the bigger rims, that will make up for the taller rims and keep the overall size close to the same. with 17s, try to get 205/40/17 or 215/35/17 tires.
