92-95 civic coupe or hatch. try to get an ex or si, but most of the options on them are transferable to any other model later on. if a sunroof is important get it now. its not as easy as everything else to add.

easy to do swaps, the cost'll be cool and with a swap the power to weight will be awsome.

if you swap a DOHC then yeah you need a tranny too. but if you get a vx or cx hatch, you could put a sohc vtec engine in it for total cost of around 3-4K, depending on your location (hatches in cali go for a premium, like 1.5-2 times blue book value) and im talking total, car and all, maybe even some other performance items. as for mileage, if you are going to keep working onit and plan on changing the engine soon mileage isnt too important. everytime something breaks, you just replace it with a better aftermarket part. try to aim for less than 150K miles, but if its cheap enough grab it anyway. if you get the car dirt cheap, then a DOHC swap is possible, expect to pay roughly 3000 total, all said and done, it may cost less (and im talking the cheaper motors, LS, B16a, and B20, which are all great motors) but dont expect to just pay for a swap. there are small hoses and stuff you will need that nickel and dime it up a couple hundred bucks.
