Hi can any one please confirm what I am thinking here, My son has a Honda civic 1.6I SR Vtec 1995 and the clutch was going you know just slipping, so he took it to a garage who did the clutch for him now when the engine is running I can hear a loud whining crunching noise, If you put your foot down on the clutch the noise starts to go and when your foot is right down there is no noise untill you lift off of the clutch.
My son took the car back to the garage and they said it was the first gear bearing has gone and he needs a new gearbox and he said that noise was already there when he got the car in which it was not, so what has he done to my sons car, has he not tightened the presure plate bolts when fitting the clutch.

it can be that or it can be that his throwout bearing has gone bad

mine makes a noise when my foot is off the clutch pedal but when i push it in it goes away

 

But the guy in the garage said he was going to put a clutch kit in which was a clutch plate/bearing and presure plate, I really dont think its the bearing as the noise is a whining crunching noise like as if the presure plate splines are loose and hitting something.

I have a 97 civic ex, I am a mechanic and I have the same problem. I was positive it was my throwout bearing, so with the mileage already on the stock clutch, I just installed a new clutch, bearings and all. Well the same sound kept showing up, where its sort of a ticking, rattling bearing noise, but when u push the clutch in it goes away. come to find out its the input shaft bearing in the transmission. Its really not that bad as far as price, just be careful of the shop you take it to, because every shop will tell you the price depends on what else the tranny needs. FYI if you can take out the tranny at home, and give the tranny to them "bench" which means out of the car, you will save a ton of money on labor for removal and install. Hope thats the problem you have and I pointed you in the right direction.

 

Damn thanks sway, my son just came back from Honda and they said what you just said but what I dont get is when it went in for the clutch there was no noise there at all, now I have fitted clutchs before yes on older cars so I am wondering if when you try to get the gearbox back in if the mechanic did the damage, this car is costing us a fortune. lol

Ok an update, I took the car to Honda myself and showed the head mechanic the problem, he said they had one in for a clutch this weekend and had the same noise so they took it apart and it turns out the 4 springs on the clutch plate did not have retaining clips, he said it was a fault with Honda Japan, great

 

Since Im not the mechanic that worked on it, its hard to say what that mechanic may have knowingly or unknowingly did. It is possible that even though there was not a noise before, the new clutch may have put more stress upon the old input shaft bearing. If this is the case, I would honestly avoid the dealer, because like you said it is costing you a fortune, and they tend to be very narrow minded, and like fedup's experiences sometimes stupid. I would really try to take it to a transmission specialist that has a good honest reputation, and a decent warranty. I know that it's costing you money now, but its a honda, you can make them run forever. Good luck Bruce.

 

Thanks sway, just another update my son has just come home and I have looked at it and it wont go into first gear now and when it does it pops back out, now could this be a linkage problem? I mean could the machanic that fitted the clutch did not take off the linkage to change the clutch now he might have bent it or did he just not refit the linkage properly? I'm trying to get out of taking it back to him as i really dont trust him.

another update it won go into reverse now, is this a badly fitted clutch as I need to take it back Monday to the person that fitted it and need to tell them whats wrong.

dude i wold be goin insane i would go back there in FLIP the F*ck out and tell him ur not paying anymore money and that he is to fix it right or you'll take it somewhere else and have him pay for!(Advise him if he doesnt you will take legal actions) b/c obvious;y they dont know what there doing or doin sh*tty work?
