How to check Manual Transmission oil on 97 Civic
#2
There is no combustion in the transmission, so the only way to lose fluid is if it is leaking. If it's not leaking, you're probably not low on fluid.
It's advised to just change it.
Recommended service interval for changing it is every 30,000 miles.
It'll cost you around $13 for two bottles of Genuine Honda MTF (highly recommended), and that's the only expense.
It's very easy to do. You need a jack, something to drain the old fluid into, a funnel, a tube, and a 3/8 ratchet with some sockets.
pics are missing, but you get the idea. http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2127518

Yes, I know this is a nerco. Just wanted to add that after talking to honda, over a dozen mechanics, and then talking to honda again. They say using regular 10W-30 oil in your manual tranny is just fine. I have been running Royal Purple in there for over 2.5 years and she is doing great. It quieted down a bit, and shifting is smoother too.
Just wanted to add this due to this thread being one of the first 3 in a google search.
