funny thing happened the other day.

i was driving my automatic 2001 corolla, and this kid in a new civic pulled up next to me. i want to say he was driving an auto, because it certainly didn't seem like he was shifting with his arm hanging out the window.

anyway...he sits there revving his stock civic(i know it wasn't an Si but i don't keep up with model designations...you people have way too many for one frickin car) at the light like he wants to race. i'm thinking ok, this kid's an idiot. the light turns green, and i romp on it. i'm not sure if his reaction time sucks or what, but i heard that poor little 1.7L screaming its heart out...and i still walked him.

now i know that's not saying much, since that 1.7L is pretty slow...but i've also seen Z24s walk Si's very easily. just because it's got that particular name attached to it, doesn't mean it's "slow" by any stretch of the imagination. there are plenty of cavaliers with FI, nitrous, the whole nine yards - and they respond disgustingly well to intake/exhaust modifications.

what amuses me more is the V6 z24s are pretty frickin quick cars, and i've seen ungodly amounts of stock Civic drivers mock them - don't underestimate them, kiddos. ;) with maybe $200 in modifications, they can EASILY push 200HP and 200 torque - to the wheels on both counts.

moral of my post? don't expect a car to be slow because it's a cav, a corolla, or a civic. they're ALL slow by default...but if the driver's worth anything, they'll win regardless of the vehicle.

and that, medear, is the point i'm trying to make. y'all dis cavaliers, when they're in the same echelon as your and my cars. at that level, it's more about the driver than the vehicle...

though i do want to add one thing. in the situation of a 5spd cav vs an auto civic...i find it hard to believe the civic won, unless the cav driver either wasn't trying, or didn't know how to launch/shift. stock for stock the cav is faster.

If you think Im bull crapin you about me totally owning a cavalier you are wrong my friend, I do NOT lie, and I dont mistake about a race. The thing is, that I wasn't stock in the first place when I killed that cav, and like I said, he was beat from 45, and a dead stop. No competititon.
If you haven't seen my mod list, look below.

I dont have anything agains cavaliers, but he had a Z24 sticker on his car, and he wanted to race, so I gave it to him.

thats not really true...when i had my civic stock i went and was racing my friends cav down the high way and i had him beat by maybe 2 and half car lengths...and were both auto. i have an 03 ex and he had an 04. by any means im not saying anything bad about cavs but i would still stick with honda just because i know there great and reliable

I think part of his point was that he thought the driver was an idiot.
my interpretation anyway

I suppose some drivers are idiots, but to the point that you dont know when to shift is pretty damn stupid. I guess some people shift at 4000 rpms when racing. hmm I dont know

I try not to argue on the internet, it makes me feel retarded everytime, but I just don't believe that. An 03+ cavalier/sunfire have the 2.2 Ecotec engine which puts out 140/140 hp/torque and weigh about 2600lbs. The EX civic has what 127hp and weighs 2800lbs. I'v raced a buddies 2004 civic before with a CAI and catback and he has a 5 speed and I have a bone stock auto sunfire with about 200lbs of subwoofer in the trunk, and I beat him by about a car length. So you beating a car with more hp/torque and less weight,

The common misconception about cavaliers and sunfires is before 2003, they were slow pieces of ****. They had a SOHC 2.2 with 110hp, thats like racing a civic DX . The 03-05 cavaliers and sunfires though are pretty quick stock, high 15s auto, mid 15s 5-speed. Not only that the Ecotec engine is a phenominal engine, and is quickly taking the NHRA as the new small block engine of choice. 1000+ hp on a stock block is nothing to sneeze at. No matter, the jbody is dead once and for all, amen.

i agree to the amen - they really were nothing but tincans...but MAN did i have fun in my 3.1L. that little car was owning quite a few cars on the road before i got her. the best part about that car is it cost me $500 and came with a free spec stage 2/3 clutch. i want to say the clutch was most of that price....

anywhat. the newer cavs have a punch, as did the 3.1L if it had a straight pipe. MAN did the v6 respond well to mods...

and to the gentleman who said he'd take a civic over a cav any day because of reliability - i'd beg to differ. the boyfriend's 2.8L V6 has 220k miles on her on the original motor...mine had over 250, and had recently gotten a new motor because she was being driven from Maryland to Massachusetts frequently. if she stayed in MD, she'd have been good for another 50k or so.
