first off - i don't know you, so i'm not really able to pull the BS flag...i will say, though, that generation of Z24(assuming it's a third gen) has 150HP at the crank...so i assume you have around the same, or you're just that much better at launching. how did you account for the Civic's lack of torque?

Well, the thing is that sticker he had was just a sticker, it wasn't a real Z24, and I knew that, just a regular cav. My friend with a 98 Huyndai Elantra raced his buddy with a 2002-2003 cav, and the Cavalier beat him by like half a car length, and that elantra is pretty slow, both were autos.

ahhhh...that clarifies it a great deal.

those have a standard of 120 hp at the crank. i'd expect your civic to whup him.

i used to say the same, till i dated the guy with the first 4 cylinder cav to hit 13s. he changed my mind...and working for a chevy dealership reinforced it.

Wow. You're pretty easily convinced, which to me suggests a lack of research and experience. Anyone can hate Cavaliers or any other domestic because they're American, but to people like myself, it's not about the name or the country of origin. It's about the quality and engineering. There is NO QUESTION or doubt in any logical automotive mind that American cars were and still are still built at a significantly lower level of quality than Japanese cars in terms of engineering, materials, tuning, refinement, and quality control. So, if your boyfriends can make you change your mind on something like that just because of what they drive, I have no question but to label you an absolute amateur.

I completely agree with Kappa... I had actually wanted a dodge neon for awhile until i did (extensive... yes, EXTENSIVE) research on from people I TRUST on their reliability... (I only wanted one, cuz I could afford it...hideous little monsters....) chevy's and fords both have their mistakes too... focuz's aren't bad, but underpowered--you know that an SVT focus only makes 170? thats ten more than a new Scion Tc(which I would definately own in a few years if the price on used ones comes down :) )

anyways... I got wayyyy off topic. sorry. I was just saying, that from my experience, most japanese cars are built with better engineering... (they are mostly math geniuses, you know... and they have WAY better test scores than that of americans too)... its just like the case of the mitsubishi... when they were japanese their motors were well known for their reliability and ability to take loads of power from F/I w/o a problem....now... well... lol the new ones have some major issues.... plus...they're ugly(thats beside the point)... well... I'm sure I've pissed some people off, so I'll shut up now.

Yeah, the truth tends to hurt the ignorant from time to time.

as far as the cavs are concerned - when you get past the water pump issue, they run just as well as any civic or corolla.

i should know. i frickin work on them.

if i were "easily convinced" then i'd be driving an SRT4 because, well, you all know they can nevAr lose, right? bullcrap.

i never said cavaliers were well built cars. i never said they were the best car out there. i said that i would consider owning another second generation phase 2 Z24 because they're fast enough to make me happy, and respond VERY well to modification...and the 3.1L powerplant is just as bulletproof as the 1.6L engines in the corollas of the 80s and early 90s.

FURTHERMORE(yes, i thought of this after the fact) - i've had more friends with problematic Civics than i have those with Cavs. maybe it's because the cavalier drivers take better care of their cars, but i certainly am not a fan of newer civics. i think the last time they looked halfway decent was in the mid-90s...and keeping in mind that insurance is stupidhigh on them, as well as high theft rates...

nah. i'll stick with my Cav that'll cost me $500 to buy, another $500 to put it over 200 HP(and actually have torque to back that up), and have insurance that'll cost about $1/year(if added to my current policy, it raises my total annual amount a whopping dollar. can't say the same for a Civic). if it's meant to be a fun track car, who cares about interior? that would be ripped out anyway. if it's a track car, the suspension would be changed anyway - so the stock suspension wouldn't be a factor.

understand that we're coming from two sides of the spectrum - but i'm not a car snob. i WILL consider chevys if i'm forced to drive a domestic. i see their repair records firsthand, and aisde from a few slight issues here and there, the cav is generally a solid car. i can't say the same for even my 2001 Corolla, which has had constant issues since the day i brought it home from the dealer. so much for your Japanese Engineering theory.

Ok, so you work on Cavaliers... at a dealership no less. From experience, people at dealerships really don't know s**t about the cars they sell or the parts that go on them. Not compared to a real mechanic, anyway. I work on anything with wheels for a living, foreign or domestic, doesn't matter what country or year it's from. So guess where I get my information? Real life.
