Washing your car with hair shampoo?
 

My boss and I were talking the other day about washing our cars, he said he had his car washing stuff in his car and I could use it. I pulled it out and he had some hair shampoo (I forget the brand) in there. I made fun of him a lil for forgetting to put it in his bathroom and he told me no, its the best to wash the car with. I was like the outside of the car???? He said yeah. We got into a debate, and he claims he used to own a detail shop and it is the best thing you can use, I say it is to harsh and will strip the wax off the car.

Any comments or some facts would be appreciated!

I have to wash my car soon--I'll give it a try and let you know! (I don't care if the wax gets stripped, it needs to be redone anyway).

Hmm, I guess if it's Ok to use on a human, it would be Ok to use on your car.

What do you think is in it to strip off anything?

I know if I am greasy, my shampoo makes my hair squeaky. What does that mean though? You might want to ask Forty this one.

when your hands are all dirty, shampoo works awesome to clean them if you are out of gojo or fast orange, might work on cars to.

I bet it really depends on what kind of shampoo it is. Oh, wait, you asked for facts. I got nothing.

I've heard that certain shampoos do "work," but they are not good for the long haul unless you re-apply wax right away. The chemicals that get the grease and what not out of your hair, tend to eat away at the wax, leaving the paint vulnerable to fading, chipping, etc..

The main problem with regular shampoo, is that it doesn't contain the necessary contents for removing dirt properly. Sure, it foams up real nice, but it spreads the dirt around rather than breaking down and absorbing it, which can leave you with swirl marks or even scratches.


Basically, its ok to do, but I don't recommend it. Spend the extra 2 or 3 dollars on a bottle of car shampoo, preferably Meguire's Gold Class. I've been using the same bottle for a year, and you know how often I use it..

Try "Head and Shoulders" shampoo and see if it keeps the snow off your car.

I never really thought it would damage anything, just strip the wax and leave only the paint which would then get damaged.


BTW, his cars paint is fading very very very badly.
