View Full Version : SEA FOAM!
Okay so i got some sea foam and used it. Stuff works GREAT. Once the car was warmed up I put 1/2 of it in my VAC line, and the other half in the gas tank. Shut it off for 5 mins, and then started it up. Just at idle the smoke was INSANE. Car drove much smoother afterwards though. It seriously looked like there was a fire in my driveway. I did not add any to the oil, as the oil goes thru my Snail, and i wasnt sure if that was safe, so i stayed away. Sea foam is getting a 10 outta 10 from me.
BallardCivic 12-26-2005, 12:04 AM I guess Im outta the loop, but what is Sea Foam? Some kind of cleaner?
yea, it cleans EVERYTHING. They sell it at pep boys or napa for 6 bucks. WELL worth it.
riceburner700 12-26-2005, 12:05 AM isnt it a fuel system cleaner, like a really powerful one
Cleans more then just the fuel system.
fast93civic 12-26-2005, 12:28 AM I put 1/2 of it in my VAC line
What exactly is this VAC line, and wheres it located? I think I'll get some of that stuff soon.

vacuum line dude.
Where is the vaccum line dude??? :D JFWY!!
BallardCivic 12-26-2005, 10:46 AM I think Pete is talking about the vacuum line that runs from the fuel pressure regulator. I could see where it would be important for that to be gunk free.
As a side note, this stuff sounds amazing. I might have to pick some up if its that cheap.
Talon585 12-27-2005, 07:36 AM Isnt it supposed to clean alot of the carbon buildup in your engine too. BTW ive heard tons of good things about seafoam.

blessing us with a pic would be great.
fast93civic 12-27-2005, 11:59 AM blessing us with a pic would be great.
no szhit, theres plenty of vacum lines, which one do you pour it in.
it doesnt matter man, they all go into the intake manfold. I did use the one on top of the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Thats only cuz it was easy to get it off. You could use any vac line.
dj_ipirate 12-27-2005, 12:26 PM so what? dump that **** in the intake? doesnt sound verry smart.
Nail I3unny 12-27-2005, 12:51 PM hes talking about the feul system
dj_ipirate 12-27-2005, 01:10 PM i dont know where that is.
sacicons 12-27-2005, 06:53 PM you dont have one there DJ. its on a return fuel system, your is returnless.
dj_ipirate 12-27-2005, 06:58 PM thanks for clearing that up. so just dump a butt load in the gas tank and feel the difference. got it.
Kappa22 12-27-2005, 07:36 PM I wouldn't recommend adding it to your tank, since it's much stronger as a direct cleaner as opposed to a fuel additive. But yeah, Sea-Foam seems to be one of those secrets no one has heard of...
dj_ipirate 12-27-2005, 07:37 PM so nothing at all? cause i herd that regular additives are garbage.
Kappa22 12-27-2005, 07:46 PM I believe they actually make both a fuel additive and a direct injector cleaner, so if it's your only option, throw a can of the additive in. It still works pretty damn good.
dj_ipirate 12-27-2005, 07:49 PM thanks for the tip. ill check it out.
AgentofDarkness 12-27-2005, 09:17 PM Somebody should do a DIY on how to use seafoam to clean your injectors. My car could really use it because it only gets about 18-20mpg (yes, thats on my civic)
xjbmx 12-27-2005, 09:48 PM I've heard really good things about this stuff, i guess now i have a good reason to go get up off my a$$ and go get some.

ouch
fast93civic 12-27-2005, 11:46 PM Speaking of cleaning injectors, one of the best ways is to actually take one out, and wipe all the carbon off of it. Then put some injector cleaner in the gas tank.
BallardCivic 12-28-2005, 12:24 AM I guess I should bust out that injector cleaner thats bee lying around the garage. Since I bought my car 6 months ago, my MPG has gone down prolly 10 miles, 25 city miles on average. Not enough for a high school kid.
Hcivic95 12-28-2005, 02:02 AM I agree

Remmy 12-28-2005, 03:05 PM After reading this thread, I ran out and got some. I have been having NASTY rough idle problems and stalling 1 out 20 times accelerating from a stop. Mos of the time the car would wait to stall when I have to make a turn with a ton of cars coming at me going 45+ [:@].
Anyway, I dumped it in on a 1/8 tank, filld up and withing 5 minutes my rough idle was almost gone! It even made the cars smoother.
xjbmx 12-28-2005, 03:20 PM Went and got some, sucked half the can out with the vac line and poured the other half in the gas tank. LOTS AND LOTS OF SMOKE!!! Car runs smoother and idles at less RPM's. After i put it in and let it sit for five minutes I started it up and there was smoke everywhere. So after about 10 minutes of letting it idle I took it for a drive down the road. It looked like one of those stunt planes that leaves the exhaust trail, people were looking at me like WTF! Seems to be some pretty good and effective stuff!
neon3kgt 12-28-2005, 03:33 PM additives are known to eat away at rubber n such. so it may not be a good idea to dump it into the fuel tank. but a nice top engine cleaner (like sea foam) wouldnt hurt to do every 100k miles.
Sea foam recommends every 2 thousand miles on the bottle.
RaskyR1 12-28-2005, 03:54 PM Be careful on putting it in the gas tank of older Preludes. I had an 1986 way back in the day and I put it in the gas tank....worked so good it loosened up all the rust in the tank which in turn clogged the dual carbs!!! $1500 for new carbs!!!
fast93civic 12-28-2005, 04:03 PM Im gonna go out and get some right now. So you say its ok to pour half of the can in to the manifold? Wouldn't that do bad things at that amount? And half in the gas tank eh. We'll see if its good as you guys say it is.
just pour slowwwwwwwwwwww and little at a time
fast93civic 12-28-2005, 05:53 PM Ok, just got done with everything. Though I think I may have sprayed that stuff a little too fast in to the line, there were a few times it almost stalled. Anyways, after waiting for 5 minutes I restarted the engine, didnt see any thing big and black, but the steam coming out of the pipe seamed to be more than before, and I could smell that stuff in the air. Afterwards took the car for a ride, seems a bit better. Six bucks well spent.

seafoam isnt a spray........did u get the right stuff? Take a pic of the bottle. It should be white.
97CivicEX 12-28-2005, 06:36 PM I didn't feel like retyping my experience with seafoam, but here it goes:

as you can see, it has kept my car running strong all this time and has fixed a lot of rough idle problems.
oh and yes there are different types of seafoam products. I normally just use the spary for the TB and other stuff and the liquid bottle for the "in tank" and in pcv hose treatment.
fast93civic 12-28-2005, 08:01 PM seafoam isnt a spray........did u get the right stuff? Take a pic of the bottle. It should be white.
Crap! I think I bought some wheel decreaser and sprayed that in! shoot... JK :D, no I got the right stuff. I unkooked the vac line from the FPR, took the top from some spray bottle, stuck it in to the seafoam can and sprayed that in to a line. Other wise the hose was too small in diameter to pour anything down. Thanks for all the help Pete, you are a good man.
lol andrey i seriously think you got the wrong stuff. The seafoam im talking about comes in a can that you take off a top and pour it out. U cant fit a spray top on it.
97CivicEX 12-29-2005, 02:33 AM damn I guess my posts are invisible:
spray type of seafoam:

liquid bottle type of seafoam:
http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUp.htm
spray is good for throttlebody, carb, and other spray type of stuff
liquid bottle is good for what pcupo12 did on the vacuum line, oil change(crank case), and fuel injector cleaner in the tank. He got the right stuff just used it slightly different. it is all on the links I posted.

As I mentioned on one of the links on my post and I believe it is also on the bottle itself, the vacuum lines would suck the liquid right up. No need for a spray bottle top. You might want to get a hold of a spray bottle to clean up the throttlebody like I mention on one of those links. That way you take care of cleaning everything at once.

No, I got the right can. I opened the top, and stuck a spray bottle top in, it didnt screw in, just set there. I sprayed that in to the vac line, it worked fine.
x2100 12-29-2005, 04:18 PM Not sure if this will help but I'll post the DIY up anyways
The Sea Foam looks like this:
It's a 1 pint bottle, and it's up to you how you want to use it.
I split mine up to 1/3 pint for the gas tank, feul injector and crankcase
Pour 1/3 pint into the gas tank and crankcase with the engine Off
Start the engine up and let it warm up.
Then remove the vacuum line from the PCV valve. When you take the vacuum line out, the engine will not be running smooth.
Put the line into the Sea Foam. Try not to stick in into the liquid all the way because your car will stall if you do that. Try to keep the vac line on the surface of the liquid. You can increase throttle to prevent the car to stall and that will also suck in the Sea Foam quicker, or you can use a spray bottle to spray it into the vac line mentioned by Fast93civic. In the process smoke will start to come out from the exhaust and manifold.
When you have the 1/3 pint into the manifold, turn the engine Off.
Restart the engine after 5 min.
There will be a lot of smoke coming out (It's probably a better idea if this is done at night so the smoke is less visible)
The smoke will go away after a while and you're done.
Your car should idle smoother and maybe even at a lower rpm. Pings and stalling should mostly be cured and tbe carbon build up cleaned.
AgentofDarkness 12-29-2005, 06:58 PM I really appreciate the DIY on using SeaFoam. I'm gonna try it once i get my hands on an extra $6.00 (i really am a broke high school student)
x2100 12-29-2005, 08:23 PM Glad to help
The pictures didn't get embeded at the right spots though, sorry about that
I got mine at Adanced Auto Parts for $4.94

Sik 6 01-08-2006, 03:06 PM I'm glad i was reading up on this. I used the seafoam in my car today and all i can say is DAMN!!! I cant believe $5 can make my car idle and rev that much smoother. I would highly recommend this to everyone.
bleedhondos 01-09-2006, 01:11 AM i've read that seafoam is great for cleaning out the carbon but it is not recommended for motors over 150,000. here the article plus its a write up. http://www.superhonda.com/tech/carbon_cleaner_treatment_how-to.html
Stumasters 02-18-2007, 04:07 PM I bought some seafoam, la dee daa... I bought some seafoam....
He he, figured I would bring this link back up to the top, considering its so damn popular.
ProjectGSR 02-18-2007, 09:00 PM oh god, cant buy seafoam in Canada...great.
edit: Someone from the US sell me a can.
civicexracer 02-18-2007, 10:08 PM i sea foamed my car a few months ago and i had about 174k miles. worked wonders, had rough idle and after it made the car run smoother than ever. the car has been bogging down a lil lately and im gena sea foam again real soon. can says every oil change and im about due, tho i dont think ill be putting any in my oil this time.
4doorcivic9 02-18-2007, 10:22 PM yeahhhh stuff works amazing i just used it 2 nites ago. I put it in my Crankcase, gas tank and vaccum line. it was CRAZY smoke coming out for like 15-20mins straight. Looked like we just smoked a big ole bowl of weed in my garage! hahaha it was tight but yess it was alot smoother and it cleaned my injector that was clogged :-) runs lots better.
