depends on what the car is intended for. If its a daily driver, I sure as hell wouldnt want 18's on it...

forgive my ignorance but im comin from suv land. how will bigger rims affect the ride quality of my civic? what are the advantages and disadvantages of bigger or smaller rims, without the obvious answer of "looks"? thanks in advance.

its mostly about ride comfert..with a 16 inch rim you will have a little more tire on there and more space to absorbe bumps and such, i like 17" rims personlly..in the civic world its usually 16 or 17s ..unless your going for somthing smaller for track and such, but with the 06 being such a bigger car compared to the 00 modle..i think 18" would look really good, it might be a little ruff ride tho depending on the thickness of tires you get

not to mention that 18's on a stock looking civic are HUGE. Even with a body kitted civic 18's are still big.

obviously i would like to throw 18s on just for the look, what will i lose performance wise? im not racing and rallying much but are a bigger rim harder on the car?

speedometer will be off.. also MPG will go down slightly in most cases of larger wheel.. havent heard of tranny problems as stated above though.. handling will be nice

aliefnate
03-17-2006, 10:13 AM
how can you fix the speedometer problem?

Remmy
03-17-2006, 11:59 AM
You cant really... it might cost you. The speedo doesnt work off the tires.

actually i just saw a new EX up close today and it really isnt that much bigger than my 99 (exact same as an 00). your car willl be quicker because you get more distance from one rotation, but it will put extra strain on the tranny because its rotating more weight.

aliefnate

so how off would the speedo be? and would i be going faster or slower than the speed shown?

i say go with 17's, but on my car i have 17's and the look a little big on the car since it is small, so my next rims will most likely be 16's

i have had 18 on my car for a year and 19's for two. no tranny problems here the only thing is it might take a lil longer to stop not much but a lil. as far as ride its not as bad as everyone makes it be. unless u are one of those people that hit potholes doin 90.

if u do 18's i would def. suggest lowering it too. don't want it looking like a 4 wheeler. nothin is worse then gettin rims and ridin high

Nail, I think you mean to say the car will be slower with larger wheels? The further away from center line the wheels outer rim is, the more centrifugal force there is eating up a little power from the engine. Larger wheels store more energy just like larger flywheels. Although the larger wheel might be lighter, the extra dimensions of the wheel steal power that should make it to the road.....top speed will be the same, it will just take longer to get there.[:'(]

Tips on big wheels:

1) Don't buy forged wheels for the street. Stick with cast.
2) Use at least 45 series sidewall for the street on big wheels.....your spine will thank you later.;)

17" & 18" look cool and matched with good tires have razor sharp handling characteristics. 15" & 16" allow for better acceleration and a larger sidewall that helps absorb the harshness of our poorly kept roadways.

no i mean technically speaking it will be quicker, because in one rotation of the wheel you get more distance. but your transmission will fail quicker than with a lighter, smaller wheel.

If you increase the entire rotational mass (wheel + tire), you'll effectively lower your entire drivetrain gearing, like you just put on a lower final drive. You'll gain top speed, but you'll lose acceleration. Heavy 18s will make ya slower too.

I will never run a civic with 18" but I will run with 17's but for track im looking for 15" rigth now.

My favourite wheel is the 15" Rota slipstream. It's cheap, light, and black. (Hides brake dust nicely):D If I want a street wheel for showing off I'd probably get a set of Buddy Club P-1's in white.

For at the track.....I'll run an 89 5.0 bone stock....come on man, your talkin about 2 different things. I "drive" my car. My last civic was a 94 ex coupe 205/40/17. I put 143K on this thing without a penny on maintinace. Not even brakes. All this talk of killing a tranny.....sure if your puttin your foot thru the floor. If ya build a race car your choices are (of course) limited. Light weight and strength. Of course an 18x8 is not the correct choice for a racer boy, but for a guy like me, and others, pure style, looks, form and function make the choice for us. My 06 will last me forever, if I keep it that long.

Why dont you just lift it and put 23" on it a call it a little suv.At like 120 dollars a tire and rubbing I will stick with my 16.

no way. the 06s arent any bigger than EKs, and are possibly smaller (at least they look smaller) than 7th gens

you guys are awesome. i was expecting to get replys like... 18s... or 17s.... you get the idea, but to have all of this from a rim question is awesome. it shows you are truly passionate about your vehicles. i appreciate the posts, keep them comin. im still debating my options.

Sorry but I'm going to disagree with most of you... most of the 06 models come with 16" wheels. The Si comes with 17" and you can upgrade to 18" HFP wheels.

The "Don't Go Above 16" answers are coming from 6th gen owners, who had 14" or 15" wheels stock. On those Civics going up to a 16" wheel will give you 45 series tires (which is still a comfortable ride). On the 8th gen models a 17" wheel also gives you 45 series tires.

i got 18s, they look nice but they are a beeeyatch to find cheap tires for if you get a flat, and the ride sux hard!!! and I had to roll my fenders into the engine bay almost lol

bah, the stock wheel diameter has nothing to do with my choice to run 16's. It's all about not having to sacrifice ride quality for an aggressive car.

But what I'm saying is, 16s on a 6th gen should have the same (or similar) ride quality as 17s on a 8th gen, since both those setups would leave you with a 45 series tire.

Go with 18". If honda gave it as an option from the factory, then it won't be bad.

suspension is different on the Si. you will feel ever pebble and groove in the road on 18s on an ex.
