I have a 91 hb dx and i was in your shoes. i recently did a zc sohc swap in my car. its not the most performence motor out there, but the swap is noticable. im looking into better options now, but the zc sohc is the most easy swap. the only thing you have to convert is the dpfi to mpfi. and that involves the fuel injector resister box, and a couple of wires added to your dizzy and ecu. othe rthan that, do a search and find out what you can do with it.
hope it helps

hell just doing the mpfi conversion you will notice gains such as better throttle response, quicker reving, stronger powerband. if money is tight id recomend this. either way when you do eventually figure out if you want to swap to b-series or the such, your already mpfi converted. question is what are you planning on swapping and what are your power goals?

Actually the DOHC ZC swap is easier than the SOHC, since you don't have to run any VTEC wiring. But yeah, for the price, either one is hard to beat if you're just looking for a nice reasonable jump in performance.
