1990 Civic Std Tranny swap 4 spd to 5 spd Questions

Has anyone verified (by personal experience) that a 5 speed 1990 civic tranny will bolt on, in place of a 4 speed with no modifications?? I have read a few messages stating that it should not be a problem here and on other places online, but after talking to 4 junkyards (all 4 said need a new clutch housing, and linkage) and to my local Honda dealer ( which said I think it should just bolt on but am not sure) I wanted to find out if anyone here had actually done the swap, and what the problems were if any, or if it was a flawless transition.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I told my mechanic it should work fine ( I dont have time to even look at it these days) and he tells me it will cause problems with the axels somehow.?!? any idea? something about the spindle not matching up. I hate sounding clueless, but I know a lot more about car audio than I do about car mechanical.
Thanks

There's a possibility that the 90-91 SI's use a different number of splines on the hubs, but unless you're using SI axles, it shouldn't be a problem.

only problem i see is clutch splines. 88 uses 20 spline and 89-91 use 21 spline. 88-89 use a 200mm disc and 90-91 use a 212mm disc. 88-91 sohc axles fit all 88-91 transmission including auto. main difference being the hubs. std/h use the smaller splined hubs as where lx,dc,si,ex use the larger splined hubs. if you are considering a dohc zc transmission you will be using an 88 clutch disc and have no choice but to use integra axles.

Yeah. The clutch shouldn't be an issue... just get the kit for the tranny. As for the ZC tranny (as finalimpact mentioned), it uses equal-length half shafts, so you can't use the stock axles. Any other EF tranny swap you do, just keep the axles that go with your hubs and you'll be fine.

OK so in a nutshell, Any 90/91 Civic/CRX Manual Tranny ( not ZC) out of a 1.5 liter car, will just pop right in place of my broken 4 speed tranny in my 90 civic HB base model.?

90-91 lx/dx/hf/si/ex transmission will bolt directly in, use your factory axles, and clutch set up aside the dohc zc.

Thanks for all the help, New(used) 5 speed tranny installed, with new clutch, and flywheel. WOW what a difference.
