View Full Version : Detailing Sprays
RaskyR1 04-27-2006, 10:11 AM Ok, I've seen a few people post about the new "ICE" detailing spry by Turtle Wax. I've been using detail sprays for almost 10 years now. I started out with PPC which I found at "Back to the 50's" cars show back in '96. I still think that works great but it is not as easy to find. I've also used Wizard, Meguires, Car Brite, 3M and just last night I bought a bottle of the ICE. I've been using Meguires because it works well and you can buy it just about anywhere but I love trying out new products. First thing I noticed about the ICE was that it was $3 more than the Meguires....that may vary by location but at Checker Auto parts that was the price. I applied it to the car as I would any detail spray....It sprays out almost like a fine foam. Not sure if that is better but most the other sprays come out in a fine mist covering the paint more evenly. It has a great smell unlike the Meguires but I'm not buying an air freshener so who cares what it smells like as long as it works. It does produce a good shine but it seems to take more wiping than Meguires or the PPC. Wizard sucked and I didn't even finish the bottle. Car Brite was nothing special either and seemed to streak easy. 3M = $$$. It's very possible that the sprays will work better if used on a car that has been waxed with the same product line...though I not about to try that. ;) I have been waxing with P21S and have used only Meguires and the ICE on this car. I have not used the others in some time though I would like to pick up some more of the PPC stuff.
If anyone else has used a few different detail sprays and really likes one let me know.
jake11375 04-27-2006, 01:24 PM I used to be a big fan of Meg's quick detail, but for the last year or so, I've been using Black Magic Wet Shine. It works so much better than Meg's QD. It enhances and deepens gloss much better than MCD, (especially on dark colors) It leaves absolutely no streaks, doesn't attract a lot of dust like Meg's, and comes off with minimal effort. I don't give a flip about big names and well known products I go with what works. I don't know about BM's other products, but they are on point with the QD. I was sceptical about trying it at first, but I broke down and got it one day and haven't looked back since.
RaskyR1 04-27-2006, 01:41 PM Yeah I seen that stuff last night and almost bought that too....I know what you mean about the Meguires and the dust....I thought it was supposed to help stop from attracting dust! [8D] They all seem to produce a good shine...I also noticed some seem to do better on filling in the fine scratches picked up from washing.
jake11375 04-27-2006, 01:53 PM Black Magic's QD does a good job of hiding those fine scratches you mentioned and some marring as well, as good as a QD can accomplish that is... Actually, my mother in-law turned me on to BM's QD. She has a black E430 Benz that I detail for her quite often and I noticed it had been looking pretty good in between waxes. So she mentions that she had been using BMQD. I've heard nothing but horror stories about BM's line of products, so I was like, whatever. But I tried it out despite their rep, and was pleasantly surprised.
picus 04-27-2006, 04:32 PM The thing with QD's is they're getting more complicated now. A lot of them are adding carnuaba's and sealants so they're almost spray waxes or sealants. For pure qd's my favorite is probably Sonus Acrylic Spirtz. Final Inspection by Megs is ok too. I also like Poorboys Spray and Gloss.
For the mixes I really love Optimum Car Wax, which is really a spray on car wax and not a qd, but most folks use it like one. I'm also really liking Finish Kare's FK425 because it's an anti-static that actually works.

...not to mention that every manufacturer has been coming out with a new one every day of the week. Like Meguires for instance...they have at least 3 detail sprays now! I'm guna go broke trying them all out! [8D]
picus 04-27-2006, 05:11 PM Hah, man I am right there with you... :)
mill$civic 04-28-2006, 11:34 AM i never hear of anyone using Mothers products..i use the wax and black to black and it works really nice, i use black magic soap when washing, and im thinking about buying the mothers detailing spray..ill let you guys no how it works out
jake11375 04-28-2006, 02:48 PM Mill$civic, I have a bottle of mother's detailing spray that I received with their clay kit. It's is pretty good, has a kind of cinnamon smell to it as well. On my paint, it doesn't quite produce as much depth and gloss as Black Magic's qd. I think it just may have the edge on Meg's qd though. BTW... Your ride looks sweet man. I just noticed your gallery updated with the new wheels and kit. Well done!
n8te81 04-28-2006, 06:44 PM oook ......so the black magic QD is at the top of the list then???....i still have to go buy some for my civic tomm cause my ROYAL BLUE just came like 30 min. ago so im gonna use that then i need to have a good spray to use thats why im liking this thread so far....JAKE id like to know from you too about this cause you have exp with black cars which is what color my civic is.
DE DE DE!!!!

DE DE DE!!!!
No Carlos no! :D hahaha! He rocks!
n8te81 04-28-2006, 08:59 PM im so watchin that right now......anyways...so if i went to say autozone or advanced would that ICE stuff be a good choice or is there better cause i dont really feel like asking the special ed guys that work there what they think is good.
RaskyR1 04-28-2006, 09:05 PM The ICE stuff work fine but I think I like Meguires is better....I will try the BM when I run out of the ICE.
n8te81 04-28-2006, 09:20 PM is it just the regular meguiars or that speed stuff on that NXT line???
RaskyR1 04-28-2006, 09:31 PM The NXT stuff...though someone else said the Final inspection stuff is better...never tried it myself so I can't say.
n8te81 04-28-2006, 09:38 PM maybe if i just buy all of them and put them in a bucket and mix them all together and put them in a single spray bottle then chances are that it would kick A$$.....lol
RaskyR1 04-28-2006, 09:54 PM OMG! why didn't I think of that?!?[sm=goodidea.gif] haha
n8te81 04-28-2006, 10:18 PM i really hope though that royal blue helps my paint out.....i really wanna buy a buffer right now i just cant afford one....should i use a clay bar on mine since i havent waxed it in like a year??....lol
jake11375 05-01-2006, 09:59 AM Mix them all togehter, now that's an idea. :) N8te81, I've found that BM's qd works best on my black metallic paint as far as renewing that just waxed shine and depth. I haven't tried Meg's final inspection or NXT qd as of yet, so I can't compare to those two, but I'll get around to them as they are always improving formulas. For best results on your car with Royal Blue or any wax for that matter, you should;
#1 Get a good car shampoo and wash with a good wash mit (Meg's Gold Class Shampoo will work fine or any of your choice)
#2 Dry with a microfiber
#3 Test the paint's cleanliness by putting your hand in a plastic ziploc bag and lightly running your hand over the paint surface. The paint should be smooth as a baby's bottom. If you feel any roughness got to step #3 if smooth step #4
#3 Clay the entire vehicle, this will remove any contaminants left behind the wash.
#4 Once the paint is clean, you are ready to wax. Having clean paint before waxing and polishing is the key.
There are plenty other steps you could take, but it seems you just want a good simple waxing and this is the best way to ensure the wax bonds to the surface for ultimate protection and shine. Just remember not to rub hard on your paint's surface whether washing or waxing to prevent scratches and marring. The only time more pressure is needed is when you're removing defects with an aggressive compound. To learn more check here (http://www.autopia.org/index.php). Have fun!
RaskyR1 05-02-2006, 09:41 AM So I broke down last night and bought a bottle of BM detailing spray. I will say it makes the paint look great...it adds a ton of depth to the paint and almost makes it look like its wet......BUT, I don't like how it goes on. It makes me think its 90% silicone because it smears on like I just sprayed WD40 all over my hood then all of a sudden poof! Wet Shine [:-]
I'm going to try it on a few other cars before I give up on it....it really does look great but I think it's because of high silicone content....don't really want that on my paint.
Keep in mind this is all my view on the products and that you may totally disagree with me. I won't bash you for using a can of turtle wax from 1990 your dad gave you if that's what you like using. I've just been detailing cars for some time and wanted to give some noobs a little feedback so they don't have to go out and try every product like I do. ;)
jake11375 05-02-2006, 10:08 AM Sorry it didn't work out for you man as I didn't have any problems with the BM qd application. :) I've found that it doesn't take a lot of product and it's best to lightly buff your car with it as this helps it dissapate faster. Too much product and hard rubbing actually make it more difficult to come off and may also cause streaking.
I too have been concerned about products containing silicone and I did some reading about it. You always hear stories about how silicone is harmful to paint and such. I don't think silicone is safe for rubber as in tires, but paint is ok. Here is a link to Meguiar's website explaining the myths about silicone. They identify it as basically an inert substance...
Meguiar's on Silicone.. (http://www.meguiars.com/faq/index.cfm?faqCat=General+Questions&faqQuestionID=19§ion=_19#_19)
RaskyR1 05-02-2006, 10:32 AM Nice find! I'm going to try the BM a few more times....it's possible I put it on too heavy. Like I said it did produce I shine that was better than all the others.
RaskyR1 05-02-2006, 10:39 AM LOL...I just finished reading the whole article and I had to laugh because my father has been doing body work for 40+ years and that is probably the number one reason I disliked products with silicone in them. He used to always bitch at me for using stuff inside his shop that had silicone in it. :D
jonyg98civicex 05-02-2006, 02:00 PM I waxed my car with the Meguiares NXt wax, now I have this spray stuff from black magic that says it make the time between waxing again longer, so do i put this stuff on after im done waxing
Is it,
wash, wax, quick detail or
wash, quick detail, wax
or What the Fudge
I washed my car than waxed it with meguiares Nxt wax (non spray wax), NOW WHAT SHOULD I DO?!?!?

LOL! Old myths die hard. I sure my dad instilled some in me that I just haven't been able to prove otherwise... yet. It seems we learn something new everyday.
Jony98, it's wash, wax, quick detail. Most qd's are for between waxes only, they really have no protective properties, just replenish the shine, help to maintain a slick surface, remove light waterspots, etc. There are some qds that act as waxes, but the few I've tried, I really didn't like. They only make a big mess. I wax so often anyway, it's not really necessary. :D
n8te81 05-02-2006, 09:44 PM yeah jake im going to autozone to buy some clay to use to use this weekend before i wax.....the PRODUCTS: megs gold class shampoo and conditioner, royal blue, and im thinking megs clay as well.....SO i guess we are still in the BATTLE OF THE QD's.......DON DON DON who will be the chosen one....lol...anyways ill take a look at some of those as well when i go to get the clay tomm.ILL post on this later after that.
absoulute 05-02-2006, 09:53 PM yea i would vote for meguiars final inspection..quick detailer is ok and the nxt line of quick detailer is horrible you really have to buff that stuff off.
RaskyR1 05-02-2006, 10:06 PM So one other thing I notice with the BM is that it left specs on the surrounding plastic. My bike has a lot of flat black plastic parts around the glossy painted panels and the wind carried it onto the other panels (similar to that of tire dressings). I've not had this problem before with any of the others. So here is a break down from my favorite to least favorite.
1. PPC
2. Meguires
3. ICE/BM too close to call
4. 3M
5. Car Brite
6. Wizards
PPC is hard to find and is not cheap...which is why I usually end up using meguires but the ppc works great...takes off bugs pretty good too. Here is the link to their website if anyone is interested.
PPC (http://www.ppcexcels.com/)
Hope this helps some noobs.
n8te81 05-02-2006, 10:24 PM so where can you get that PPC from??? autozone or wherever???
RaskyR1 05-02-2006, 10:50 PM lol...like I said hard to get a hold of....there is a wholesaler in MN that carries it otherwise large car shows and online....been about 2 years since I bought any simply because I'm to lazy... I like just being able to drive down the street and pick it up when I need it.
jake11375 05-03-2006, 08:36 AM Hmmm.... :) I might have to try some of that PPC perfect detail along with some Meg's final inspection. I'm always down for trying something new. If I bought on impulse everytime I wanted to try a new product, I'd be flat broke. :D But I need to build back up on my detailing supplies anyway.

RaskyR1 05-22-2006, 10:49 AM So I ran out of my Meguires detail spray on Friday and I decided to go out of my way and drive to the wholesaler that sells PPC. I picked up a gallon of it...OMG! Why I ever stopped using this stuff I have no idea! It's not that it makes the car shine anymore that the others but it's so easy to use and the best part, IT REMOVES BUGS! Now I'm not talking about bugs that you've left on the car since your last wash a month ago but it does take them off if they're not baked into the paint. I you can afford the extra cash I recommend giving it a try.
