Default '96 Civic H/U install question

Hi I just got a sweet Pioneer CD player for the '96 EX (DEH-P5800MP) the other day at Best Buy. They are offering free installs, but when I drove around back, there are lots of burn-out marks and there were some kids hanging out with some of the guys that work there, and when they left, they made sure they're exhaust couldn't be any more annoying. Anyways, I didn't get a very good vibe from the place.

I'd like to install it myself, but my question is, has anyone installed the headunit in the lower opening by the shifter? Mine is an automatic if it matters. It would be outta plain sight in this location, which might be a benefit, but the unit might be out of reach for normal use, but it does have a remote control. Also, is there a good write up for installing the h/u? I've done a search but couldn't find anything good.

Thanks again!

Default RE: '96 Civic H/U install question

I just installed a Pioneer DEH-P4800MP in my 96 EX coupe but where the factory radio was. And I put the factory radio at the bottom because I have the keyless entry in my car and need to keep the factory radio in my car.

The install was VERY EASY. But then again, I bought my H/U through Crutchfield for $139.99 w/ free installation kit, free wiring harness and free shipping. They also sent me instructions on how to take apart everything and install it.

I don't have pics now but will put them up when I have a chance.

I'm pretty sure it's easy to place the radio at the bottom but to do that. You will have to take apart the center console as well, where the shifter is to get to the screws to take off the tray that is there now.

If I can assist, I will. Just let me know what info you need.

But in my opinion, I think you should just install it where the factory radio is. It looks much better too.

Good luck!

Yeah I realized this yesterday, had to go to BWI and I realized I use the cupholder constantly so that would block the CD player. I got a good deal on my CD player b/c it was an open box, but I might take it back b/c Crutchfield's offer sounds great. I looked that up the other day.

I didn't know you have to keep the factory radio in, b/c there is a pos Aiwa CD player in there now, and the keyless entry works great!

Thanks for the response and I'll be sure to hit you up if I got a question!

Is yours the factory keyless? If there is already a H/U in there, then the factory radio is probably behind the tray.

Well, no matter what, good luck with your install. Take some pics once you are done. I will go home tonight and take pics of my install.

Yeah the keyless is factory, and I'm not sure if the factory headunit is still there. It's my g/f's old car that she no longer drives, so it's mine! haaha! She had this pos Aiwa CD player installed about 5 years ago at Circuit City. So when I get around to getting it installed, or if I do it, I'll let you know!
