Thats right im going to be changing it soon so phoned my local honda dealer and they said they could sell me some from their workshop for £16 thats like nearly $30 which im thinking is quite expensive. he then said the technicians say just to put normal 10/40w oil in and it will do the job fine. what you think?

i put oil in my tranny myself, not the honda stuff its too much money. so people will say only use the honda oil because it has special additives and stuff. never had a problem with the using regular motor oil.

For a manual trans it not that important to use Honda fluid. However, i would recommend using something like synchromax or a synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is thinner and when the synchros are meshing with the gear, synthetic oil will leave the space b/w the synchro and gear alot faster than regular oil will.

Thanks guys. il throw some synthetic magnatec engine oil in later this week when I do the tranny and engine oil.

i know i'm being optimistic, but i just changed mine today, and i think you should use honda tranny fluid, they made the stuff for a reason. but i wouldn't recommend using regular engine oil in your tranny. btw, i got like 10 quarts for free from a buddy of mine at a dealership. haha

And why is that? Honda sells Honda tranny fluid b/c people will buy it. Do you actually thing Honda makes its own oil? Honda engine oil is prolly really jus rebranded __________ oil. The only time you should be using Honda fluid is with honda AUTO trans b/c the auto trans is a hydraulic system and a different visconsity of oil will cause the trans to shift differently b/c the oil will leave the small spaces inside the trans at a different rate than the trans is programmed for. Engine oil is engine oil. Tranny oil only lubricates the gears and yes, you actually do use regular oil. Auto tranny fluid does ALOT more than lubricate gears so that is why you should only use Honda fluid. BTW HONDA recommends that 10W-30 or 10W-40 MOTOR OIL be used in the trans. That is straight from the service manual.

ive used store brand 10w30 with no problems. i have even used 75w90 before with no problems. screw the honda mtf prices.

ok didn't know i was going to start a "bitch fight"! LOL! i'm just saying that it's recommended, but the oil is different, engine oil's main objective is to wet the seals and lubricate. tranny oil is made for the moving gears. but it really doesn't matter, unless you have about 200,000 miles on your car it doesn't even need to be changed, i changed it at about 79 K and it looked just like the new stuff.

Wrong again bud, engine oil and tranny oil is the same. If it wasn't the same then HONDA would not RECOMMEND using MOTOR OIL in thier transmissions. Tranny oil does not move gears, tranny oil lubricates the gears. The gears are moved by the engine. Remember we are talking about MANUAL transmissions. I would really like to see you prove that tranny oil moves gears. There is no pump in the manual transmission. I've seen a manual transmission taken apart and there is no possible way that the oil could move the gears. The oil sits at the bottom of the transmission and when the gears move they dip into the fluid and throw it around the trans by centrifigual motion.

and the tranny oil stays pretty clean because there is no combustion going on in the transminssion, so no black carbon like engine oil.
