View Full Version : Motor build stage "3" (6-26-08)
riceburner700 08-30-2006, 12:05 AM as some of you may know i acquired a complete d16y7 with everything except the tranny and ecu..., i have started the strip down to the bare metal with the engine being fully disseminated and ready to be bored .020 over and the block either acid dipped or sandblasted with all the crap off of it.... i really want a fast civic for the street and crazy fast civic for the drag strip with slicks and the whole shabang. I am going boost, with full ems standalone down the road when the engine goes into the car..... well here are some pics of the cylinder head and how far i have gotten so far. I would have it fully dissasmbled and started the porting on it but i am still trying to get ahold of a valve spring compressor...This motor is gonna take me a little while to do because i am a strudent but wont be to long... hope to have something for it every pay check weither it be rods, pistons, bearings, gaskets, etc. i plan on having pics up after i install something new
civicexracer 08-30-2006, 12:12 AM awesome! keep us updated!
riceburner700 08-30-2006, 12:21 AM yeah i want to see what a single slammer can really do with the right parts...and one hell of a tune of course:D:D
Kedawei 08-30-2006, 02:17 AM What does acid dipping do exactly?
I have a feeling this a gonna be a GOOD LONG THREAD. Good luck!!!
Is the second pic after the sandblasting? It looks so much cleaner than in the first one...
riceburner700 08-30-2006, 09:10 AM no acid dipping is were they dip like a engine block or cylinder head into a big tank of a certain type of acid and then they let it sit in there for so long and then when they remove it all the stains, dirt, grease anything that was on the metal will be gone, also works for coolent stuff stained around the cylinder walls and inside the engine... The second pic i didnt acid dip the valve cover, it originaly had no paint on it so i just used wheel acid on the top with a scrub brush to get the big stains out and then i renced that off with running water then took a sos pad to it and got into all the little cracks..I then sprayed off everything with compressed air and then let it dry what water was still on the valve cover. I got my engine temp paint at checker for like $5 or something close to that. I got the color "cast coat iron" by krylon. Looks a little bit like a mugen color but a little let brown. I wanted something different that i havent seen so this is why i went with this color. As for the silver "honda" letters on the top i just took a flat file and carefully stratched off the paint until the letters were all visible in shiny aluminum, just make sure you keep the file level and dont let it hit the actual valve cover or else it will scratch the paint...
more updates soon
Forty04 08-30-2006, 09:12 AM Dude, AWESOME! I will be an avid follower of this build. Good luck man
Remmy 08-30-2006, 11:22 AM Yea, this is pretty cool. Give us some detailed shizzle
Peg_Leg 08-30-2006, 01:44 PM looks great nice work keep us updated
Fiirkan 08-30-2006, 03:02 PM Sweet dude, i can't wait to see the finished product
Sounds like you are gonna make it a beast. Cant wait to see it!
96civic285whp 08-30-2006, 09:05 PM Looks awsome! Nice choice of color and nice job laying it down.
mill$civic 08-30-2006, 10:18 PM good luck!..i want to see how far this is going to make it
riceburner700 08-31-2006, 12:14 PM yeah its coming alone nicely, i am still debating on weather or not going with 9.0.1 pistons or 10.0.1 for little less lag time, goal is about 400hp with this motor for the strip and like 300 for the street
Good luck it sounds like it'll be a very mean car, i'll be following your progress like many on this forum!
riceburner700 09-09-2006, 09:17 PM dissassembled the cylinder head :D:D going to be fully ported either tomorrow or monday:D:D

riceburner700 09-09-2006, 09:41 PM o yeah wait tell the head is cleaned and ported both intake and exhaust.... sexual chocolate right there:D:D
Man, that looks soo beautiful [sm=smiley20.gif]
96civic285whp 09-09-2006, 11:44 PM Were going to find out what a real d-series can do!
riceburner700 09-10-2006, 05:24 PM o yeah im not gonna play around on this build^^:D:D
Cant wait to see how it all turns out. Nice job so far.
riceburner700 09-21-2006, 10:20 PM finaly got the crank pulley bolt out and torn down the bottom end tonight, the number 4 piston dropped out of the cylinder after i disconnected if from the crank which is telling that thats probably why the motor lost a lot of compression, all the others took a little bit of work to wiggle out of there cylinders

Forty04 09-22-2006, 07:31 AM I hear the crank pulley bolt is a bitch, how long did it take you to get that sucker out?
riceburner700 09-22-2006, 09:10 AM well i actualy found the tool to do it. and i borrowed if from work, basicly one person holds the pulley with the tool and i had to hit the breaker bar with a huge 10 lbs mallit as hard as i could, almost broke the breaker bar but if you have a pretty decent sized breaker bar over a 1 1/2 you should be good, im gonna get a bigger breaker bar for this kind of stuff
riceburner700 10-09-2006, 10:41 PM did some cylinder head work tonight, also got a pic of my car at work along with my new front strut bar
pistons(cp)
rods(tuner toy)
headgasket(cosmetic)
headstuds(arps)
tein basic suspension
all on the way:D:D

Fiirkan 10-09-2006, 10:50 PM NICE!!! ... but man you gotta get a better pic then that;)... it deserves so much more:D
riceburner700 10-09-2006, 10:52 PM sry for the sh*ty camera phone pics. im gonna get my dads camera and take some damn good pics
ef4life 10-09-2006, 10:55 PM very nice man, i heard you are actually supposed to hang the crank from the ceiling or something so it won't sag. what cam are you gonna run?
riceburner700 10-09-2006, 10:58 PM hearing a lot about this delta cam for the y7 which im probably gonna go with since i cant find anything else!
Forty04 10-10-2006, 07:33 AM Awesome man, She's coming along quite nicely. You hatch is so ****ing clean and I can't wait to see it rippin'
Keep up the good work
Marty 10-10-2006, 10:42 AM Go 9 to 1, you can alter your spool time by piping sizes, choice of turbo, and other things. What turbo you plan on using?
riceburner700 10-10-2006, 08:53 PM i am hearing some people tell me to go with a to4e but i want something that is good to about 400-500hp and ball bearing, i just love them
riceburner700 10-11-2006, 10:58 AM update, yesterday at work i just got a "FREE" 98 ex transmission and its clean as hell to.. Nice to have your work backing you as a sponser.
jake11375 10-11-2006, 11:32 AM Subscribing to this thread. Looks awesome man, can't wait to see the final results. :)
riceburner700 10-12-2006, 12:46 AM wow i never though i would get this many followers.... dont worry guys i wont dissapoint you:D:D
Marty 10-12-2006, 06:20 PM a Garrett GT30R is all you'll ever need
riceburner700 10-13-2006, 11:29 AM sounds good:D:D
Marty 10-13-2006, 11:25 PM Yea it's a good turbo plus being it is a large frame design you can swap on like a GT40 or a GT42 housing and have a bigger turbo for cheap.
riceburner700 11-11-2006, 11:52 PM gave in on friday at work while iw as in the snap-on truck so i baught the top of the line die grinder which was a pretty penny. Started porting/polishing the cylinder head today, so far i spent about 3 hours on the exhaust side and will probably spend another 2 hours tomorrow then its off the the intake and combustion chamber side. snap some pics which it is turning out really good so far looks so damn nice

t34me 11-12-2006, 12:20 AM sweet man!! Takes some balls to tackle a DIY job like that. Looks like its going to be a killer build, excited to see what happens with it
Awesome. This has turned out to be quite the project. Cant wait to see the results.
riceburner700 11-12-2006, 12:01 PM yeah im gonna do some more work and hopefully finish the exhaust side today, im gonna get some good pics to, everyone be patient:D:D to all my followers

these are way better pics and hope you all enjoy:D:D i know i sure am am only 1/3 done
Fiirkan 11-13-2006, 10:06 PM Boobies.... i mean TITS! hahaha looks like it will be amazing when you done:D

kman92civicsi 11-13-2006, 10:46 PM i wish i had the spare time and tools and money to get down and dirty with a build like that man, i hope all works out really well for you, i am going to be keeping an eye on this build bro , to get some ideas for the FUTURE!!!!!
riceburner700 11-13-2006, 11:20 PM to be honest all my money is going into this build. i am building it paycheck by paycheck. my only bills are cell phone, credit card, snap-on account, car insurence, and gas. i really love d-series and want to see what one can do before i swap in like a b18c or h22 in a couple years when im ready to move onto something bigger and better. yeah i could of went already with a b-series and turbo and then meet my goal but how many d16y7's that are fully built running around? i havent seen one yet
SoCaL.rider 11-14-2006, 02:19 AM ^ hell yeah, mad respect
Forty04 11-14-2006, 08:07 AM Very nice work riceburner, not too many people have the gonads to tackle something like that
riceburner700 11-14-2006, 09:08 AM yeah im an all around do it yourselfer, if i can make it i am that much more proud of it because i did more and more of it.
Remmy 11-14-2006, 09:20 AM That is going to be a beast! I cant wait to see the results.
civicexracer 11-14-2006, 11:56 AM lookin very good man. mad props.
FlipHKD720 11-14-2006, 12:33 PM Dude, im really excited to see how this things turns out. Were you planning on doing a Mini-Me to get VTEC or just keepin the y7 head? Either way that things goign to tear it up. Tits man lol :D
riceburner700 11-14-2006, 09:24 PM i dont want to deal with vtec, i think its way over rated if you are building an engine.
i am staying non-vtec
riceburner700 11-18-2006, 02:45 PM cleaned the block with simple green/purple power and came out very nice. got all that crud off. well hear are some teaser pics of how the engine is gonna somewhat look near finish. i also started on half the intake sides for porting.
enjoy

Fiirkan 11-21-2006, 12:43 AM LOL, nice too see the progress is going so fast... i know some people(like me) would take for ever for that
Forty04 11-21-2006, 07:09 AM beautiful. Where did you get the tool to do this?
riceburner700 11-21-2006, 09:04 AM i first baught a standerd abrasive cylinder head porting kit that has everything you need. i also baught a damn good how to port and polish dvd off ebay. if anybody is interested pm me. i work at an automotive shop that does everything from oil changes to heavy duty trucks and we have all the big name tool guys that come around so when snap-on showed up i went in and baught the best die-grinder they had which was a little more than i wanted to spend($240) but at least its almost payed for. That is how i have done it so far.:D:D
heres the dvd i baught

Peg_Leg 12-07-2006, 09:01 PM sweet they look great nice project
Fiirkan 12-07-2006, 09:07 PM Sweet man, when you geting the heads of the piistons.
ProjectGSR 12-07-2006, 09:26 PM Sweet port job mang, so riceburner is it hard to port? Or just stick the grinder in there and thats it??
riceburner700 12-07-2006, 09:59 PM to be honest it takes a LOT of time. i spend damn near 14 hours on that cylinder head. it is very very easy to take to much off. its hard not to take your time
riceburner700 12-07-2006, 10:00 PM as for the pistons, im going with cp pistons/rings/wrist pins they are the best piston you can buy but they are also 500 bucks so some time here real soon then its off to have the block sleeved
POLYTHING 12-07-2006, 11:03 PM damn nice,
some guys, i think PETE sent his head to some guy to get it rebuild. you did it yourself? amazing!
a free tranny? awesome. so u are building the white HATCH right? how cool
riceburner700 12-07-2006, 11:32 PM yup. everything from the back of the car to mainly the front. the only thing that i am not doing myself is:
sleeving
valve seat grindings
pulling out the valve guides and installing new ones.
and tuning
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/8307/finishedportsxc3.jpg
heres another pic which i think is one of the sexiest so far of the motor.:D:D

No worries bro, it'll be here before I actually get the new head anyway. Can't wait to try it all out! Thanks again
Nice choice on the rods/pistons/bolts man, this build is a huge inspiration to me
riceburner700 12-14-2006, 09:02 PM got a little waiger on the line at work today. i was talking to one of my friends(employes) at work and he seems to think that with my 1.6L i am not going to make over 300 whp, let alone 450whp out of the motor next year. i bet him 50 bucks i would and my other friend to. they think anything under basicly a 2.5L wont make sh*t for power.
so what do you guys think will i be able to make over 300whp? lol:D:D
Fiirkan 12-14-2006, 09:10 PM Well you better now you goofy looking bastard:D
Remmy 12-14-2006, 09:36 PM That motor is gorgeous! And they will lose the bet.
ef4life 12-14-2006, 10:35 PM they will lose the bet, but 450 might be pushing it, tune it really well for that, but 300 would be almost easy
riceburner700 12-14-2006, 11:12 PM yeah the motor is gonn abe built to handle 40lbs but im only gonna run 25-30lbs

riceburner700 01-10-2007, 12:54 PM i have looked at those websites every other day^^^lol
side update: baught the d15b7 head from pegleg, have new headgasket, valve seals, intake/exhaust gaskets. gonna throw it on my car for now while im building my motor just for some more power. im gonna do a full port and polish with the head and install the new parts. do you guys want me to do a diy with pictures of how to do a b8 to b7 head swap?
i already tryed the whole mini-me thing and that went south so fast. i dont want to hear about how i should of done a vtec(mini-me).
Fiirkan 01-10-2007, 01:12 PM Sounds cool Dustin, the egg should scoot a bit better with the new head. i think a DIY would benefit, but most people usually lean towards the mini me.
johnny 01-10-2007, 05:10 PM OMG! thats the sexiest thing ever. Man Im exctied. Cant wait to see that clean hatch scaring your work buddies!
civicblend97 01-10-2007, 07:44 PM gude.com (bullfrogcams) they have a cam for the y7 to but i dont know if it will work for what ur doing, or u may have a cam i dunno, this is the
first time seeing the thread. i like seeing the y7 built though cause thats what i have, only if i had the money.. keep it updated i want to see more
Kedawei 01-10-2007, 09:54 PM Crane cam ftw.
SovXietday 01-11-2007, 12:47 AM Sweet build, looks like both of us are going for similar power.:)
Since you've selected the Y7, check out this link. You DEFINITELY want to look into doing the oil pump mod, and you may need to notch the block for the rods (I'm not sure on the tuner toys).
http://www.theoldone.com/articles/d%5Fseries%5Fengine%5Fbuilding%5Ftips/
Check it out, last thing you want is for that engine to go because the oil pump sucks.[&:]
Good looking build so far though, looks like it's gonna be a fun time when you're all said and done. Oh, those guys who said you can't make 300whp out of a Dseries can go stuff it.;)
riceburner700 02-12-2007, 10:28 AM well i fully hot tanked the head, dissassembled the whole rocker assembly and took out all the valves, ported and polished intake and exhaust, port matched the gaskets, brand new seals and gaskets. took the car apart last night and did the whole install including adjusting the valve clearance. First start up went really good she idles perfect and only jumps about 20 rmp's at idle. the only downfall but i knew it has to happen is that since the car was tuned for the 8 valve head it was running 14.7 at idle but as soon as .01 throttle was applyed it would go straight to lean and cut out. So the next step is streat tune the car so it can be driven lightly to my tuner and get it to work were i'm putting on a mandrel bend 3" piping from the turbo clear to the muffler (custom) with a flex pipe to keep rattles down. Valve cover is getting repainted from the ford blue thats on it now to the gun metal grey like the valve cover on the d16y7 that im building.
Remmy 02-12-2007, 10:41 AM pics or ban!

I second this motion:D
riceburner700 02-12-2007, 10:45 AM im at school but i will get some on my next off hour. the ports look just like the d16y7's but i will get some pics
riceburner700 02-12-2007, 11:39 AM the first two pics are of the 8 valve head lol. you could barely stick a guarter in the exhaust and intake ports
last ones are of the 16 valve installed
i know im gonna get sh*t for my wastegate open right above my filter but im ordering a flange so i can dump it to the ground dont worry lol..

aryiman98civic 02-12-2007, 12:19 PM nice job on getting the head from peg. ya you need to make a dumptube, dont wanna catch your engine bay on fire.
Fiirkan 02-12-2007, 12:51 PM I thought you meant that you completed the engine LOL. well i hope you like the new head a lot more then the old man, i am sure it will be a lot more peppier:D
riceburner700 02-12-2007, 01:16 PM yeah im hopping:D:D
Fiirkan 02-12-2007, 01:19 PM well 16 valves vs 8 valves. factory 102hp vs factory 72hp... i think there will be a difference of a couple dozed HP:D
riceburner700 02-12-2007, 01:47 PM yeah im just hopping the engine can take it. 3 out of the 4 cylinders are good the other is like 135psi vs the others which are at 150. but it doesnt comsume any oil and doesnt smoke or leak anything. so i guess we will see.

A true D-series. Not givin a **** about the bottom end.
riceburner700 02-18-2007, 03:09 PM update on the d15b7. I adjusted the fuel so i could rev it up and stay steady 13.1. As soon as you started to move the car would fall on its face. Couldnt figure out what it was i though my timing belt was off so i kept adjusting it, still nothing car sounded like a subaru sti no joke. Well i took out all the spark plugs and the #4 cylinder was soaked in gas, brand new spark plugs. So i went and checked the spark plug wire for high voltage and everything was cool. Next went to the distributor cap and checked the points inside. turns out the #4 point had heavy carrosion on it. So i cleaned them all off and put everything back together. The car starts and revs perfect. So took if for a spin and it builds boost at 2500rpms and has a ton of torque. next its off to work to make my mandrel 3" all the way back then hit the dyno for some tuning and repainting my valve cover the gun metal grey like the d16y7 head. gonna be real clean
Peg_Leg 02-18-2007, 05:18 PM hey dustin how's the d15b7 head i sold you doing ?

riceburner700 05-17-2007, 03:32 PM i finaly quit my job of being a lube b*tch at an automotive shop and am working with my dad making 7% which is a ton of money. im selling my turbo kit off my car now and am hoping to get 900 bucks for it which i will buy either my benson sleeves or my valve train with a 3 angle valve job. I have had so many bills i only had like 150 bucks a month to free spend so i sold a lot of stuff to buy these
its my dads camera, which i use more than him hahahaha.
also my business cards came in.:D:D
Skrapdoggydog 05-17-2007, 03:53 PM those pistons are the s*** man. excellent choice!
how much is it gonna cost to have ur block sleeved?
riceburner700 05-17-2007, 04:00 PM around $1050 shipped back to me. they are gaurenteed to hold up to 40psi though which i dont have to worry about the stockers failing
riceburner700 06-03-2007, 07:45 PM [sm=happy046.gif][sm=happy046.gif][sm=happy046.gif]just graduated highschool, got about 1700 dollars cash mainly in 20's lol. Im so stoked. Little update, the block is being shipped out to laskey racing this week for the BENSON sleeves to be installed. I am planning on buying laskey valves and having a 3 angle valve job done. Im ordering a mishimoto aluminum radiator along with a slim fal fan. The project is rolling along very nicely. got the ARPS in friday, also got some oem goodies which were expensive. Got SOOOOOOO much more to go but its gonna be done right the first time instead of having to go back and replace some part that failed from having 100,000+ miles on it. pics are up

Forty04 07-09-2007, 04:23 AM Sweeet!
For the bay, I'd go black, it's more universal incase you end up switching exterior colors later. Tyler's engine bay is black and I didn't even notice the first couple times I saw it. Usually when the bay doesn't match the exterior it sticks out like a sore thumb
riceburner700 07-09-2007, 09:34 AM im thinking like a flat black like the old hot rods, nothing glossy in the engine bay just all business!:D
basbal123 07-09-2007, 04:16 PM ^^ ya that sounds good
riceburner700 07-09-2007, 09:03 PM well took half the stuff out of the engine bay tonight and primered it and painted it flat black, reinstalled most of the stuff we took out, the flat black looks amazing and will really make the motor stand out very cleanly. i will get some pics tomorrow when the suns out
riceburner700 07-10-2007, 04:02 PM some more pics of the progress

riceburner700 07-13-2007, 07:07 PM still working on painting the engine bay. man its tough removing everything and putting it back. Also did a wire tuck on the passager side, routed the wires under the fender instead of around the shock tower. Looks so much cleaner. Let me know what you think

FlipHKD720 07-13-2007, 07:25 PM wire tucks always look so good, good lcuk with everything man
ej6buddy 07-13-2007, 09:20 PM looks good, i was thinking about a wire tuck myself (at least the drivers side). i might do it when i install my sidemarkers.
riceburner700 07-14-2007, 08:59 AM it takes about 6 hrs a side to do it right
ej6buddy 07-14-2007, 11:35 AM i was only gonna attempt the drivers, i don't have enough time for anything more. and i think the 6 hours is a little steep, maybe 2-3 a side (at least for the drivers side)
basbal123 07-14-2007, 07:34 PM damn, y does it take so long to hide wires, what all do you have to do??
riceburner700 07-14-2007, 09:17 PM i had to cut about 10 wires, extend them and connect them backgether, heatstring tap, then rapped it all in eletrical tap, them wire loomed it all up and nice so water doesnt get in it. Then i zip tied it to the frame, had to drill some small holes. it can be done a lot quicker if you just cut and extend, but you are gonna risk getting water in the wire connections depending on how you do it
tberrett98 07-14-2007, 10:11 PM how did you learn all this? You just graduated from high school and you aleady can rebuild your engine and know who and where to have work done that your can't or don't want to do. Just wondering how your learned all this?
riceburner700 07-15-2007, 08:47 AM just learning from some threads on the internet and watching videos, i took a high school automotive class at front range community college when i was a junior, its basicly there automotive class but only 1/2 of it for high school students. I have messed around with my car a ton since i got it when i was 16. To tell you the truth i never realy payed attention in high school, I was never good at the whole grade school thing, i have a hard time remembering things in short term, But for some reason when it comes to cars apparently i know a ton and remember every detail short term and long term which is very bizar, If theres something i dont know like eletrical or mechanic i go and read up a little on it and what others have done then go for it. I also worked at an automotive shop helping techs work on european cars for a little under a year last year
Forty04 07-16-2007, 04:32 AM Lookin good man!
ej6buddy 07-16-2007, 01:12 PM all you do to learn is just do it.
riceburner700 07-30-2007, 08:23 PM good call^^
any who got my FAL fan today, had some troubles mounting it because the mounts on the radiator wernt in the perfect spot. also am about 90% done with painting the engine bay black. let me know what you think, STILL waiting for the block back from benson, they said they do s2000's, then b-series, then d-series, sh*ty way of doing business, it should be first come first serve, i almost told laskey to send my block to golden eagle but they said its first in line and the bseries are almost done., almost been 2 months now. If the block was back the bottom end would be build and done.

theblackpearl 08-05-2007, 01:51 AM i've been looking everywhere for a d16y7 build, and here it is.
i kept on skipping over it because you added d15 to the title, sigh.
but it's all good, wonderful build by the way, i'll be looking toward your build when i start on my y7 in a couple of weeks hopefully.
riceburner700 08-05-2007, 03:50 PM good news, my block is FINALY done and being shipped to me as i type this, hoping for a full discription of the bottom end being built within the next couple weeks.
FlipHKD720 08-05-2007, 03:54 PM havnet check this in a while, engine bay looks good, cant wait to see the block:)
riceburner700 08-08-2007, 07:38 PM FINALY!!!!!!!!!!! 2 months later the block is back from benson. Hope you engine the pics, i dont know of anybody else on the forum that has a sleeved block but i could be wrong. im so glad i stepped up and got these done. The bottom end is going together soon just need some bearings, seals, pump and a couple gaskets and baammmmm the bottom end is done lol.
Enjoy!

What are the goals ( yeah i could probly scroll up and find the answer)
riceburner700 08-08-2007, 07:47 PM 400hp-450hp
johnny 08-08-2007, 07:49 PM What turbo and management?
Skrapdoggydog 08-08-2007, 08:41 PM block looks sweet man:Dwhen is this beast gonna be done?
riceburner700 08-08-2007, 08:52 PM gt30r, s300
when i get a LOT of money hahahaha
theblackpearl 08-08-2007, 11:48 PM when you sleeve the cylinders, do they replace the whole cylinder part, meaning take out the four circles inside the gap from the rest of the block, or do they just add a surface layer to everything? when i look up sleeving websites, they only show the finished product, and of course they don't tell me how they do it step by step. so any info on how the companies actually perform the sleeving process will improve my knowledge, thankz
riceburner700 08-09-2007, 07:35 AM http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=565375&page=1
shows how they do it
FlipHKD720 08-09-2007, 03:40 PM ^ thanks for the link, that explains it well, btw i engined the pics as well ;)
theblackpearl 08-10-2007, 09:02 PM so they just slip it right in and let the sleeves expand to keep it in place? sounds a little too simple to be true but i guess technology is that advanced now
littlephil 08-10-2007, 10:59 PM ^ the block is heated first so it would have expanded, then it shrinks around the sleeves
theblackpearl 08-29-2007, 09:09 PM anything new???
riceburner700 09-02-2007, 06:10 PM just buying a bunch of tools, iv been at lake powell for the past 10 days
theblackpearl 09-02-2007, 11:24 PM alright man, take your time
hope you had fun
riceburner700 09-07-2007, 05:16 PM gonna have an update tuesday night, getting some very important parts/tools in
BX_Civic 09-07-2007, 06:42 PM I cant belive im just seeing this thread now.
Good luck on the rest of what looks like the best and prettiest build i have seen. I hope to see some nice numbers and pics once its all set up.
Good job man, looking awesome...
GReddy_Civic 09-07-2007, 06:46 PM if you dont mind me askin, how much do you have in the build so far and how much do you plan to have in at the end? Btw, I'm in love with this build, nice job and good luck
riceburner700 09-07-2007, 08:22 PM the benson block sleeves were $1025, cp pistons were $550, tuner toy rods $235, Arp bolts $150, all new oem parts and gaskets $350.
i am figuring between $6000 and $7000 including topmount and a gt30r, thats $2500 right there when the motor is in and running awesome, then the car has to get a paintjob(champ white), carbon fiber goodies. probably to much man lol. Im way over building everything .
theblackpearl 09-07-2007, 08:43 PM is 235 for rods considered a good price?? what would be considered cheap or expensive for decent quality rods, that maybe can go up to 4 or 500 horses. and what other brands would you suggest??
riceburner700 09-07-2007, 09:33 PM almost all h-beams are from the same manufacture, just when they get to eagle, scat, tuner toys they all do there own little things like bore the wrist pin, put in arp bolts etc. The scat or eagle rods are right around the $300 dollar range which can withstand high 500+ hp and high reving. If you can get ahold of the tuner toy rods with the s2000 bolts they go for 250 bucks and can handle the same amount of power.
theblackpearl 09-08-2007, 11:26 PM how about these rods from tuner toys, they don't say anything about s2000 studs but they do say that they can take up to 700 hp, and i think that they are the official tuner toys site
http://tunertoys.zoovy.com/product/R3-5394-AH
riceburner700 09-09-2007, 06:35 AM yeah thats the site, they come with the 8740 bolts which arnt designed to rev over 7000 i bolieve. they are good rods though
theblackpearl 09-09-2007, 03:39 PM are those the rods that you bought??? the d16y7 engines that we have aren't meant to rev over 7000 anyways right??
riceburner700 09-09-2007, 05:20 PM yes those are the same rods i have. The cam and intake are designed to have peak hp around 7500. I think the bolts can handle the extra couple hundred rpms. They are an awsome rod for the money, i am looking into buying the arp2000 bolts for them just for the extra insurence.
the factory reline for a d16y7 is 7200
theblackpearl 09-09-2007, 07:31 PM gotcha, thankz riceburner
riceburner700 09-11-2007, 08:09 PM little update just buying some tools, still have a few to get, i have two different micrometers not just the one 3-4" i also have a 2-3" pictured. i also found stronger manifold studs for relitively and the intakes are slightly longer for a hondata gasket, best nuts i could find as well. i know i didnt need them but what the hell they were about 25 bucks for the whole stud and bolt package

theblackpearl 09-13-2007, 05:12 PM what's that tool on the left and how much were the micrometers, what do you need them for???
riceburner700 09-13-2007, 08:22 PM there precision tools to measure mainly gap to determin what bearings i need. Just engine assembly tools
bcrichguitars 09-24-2007, 06:08 PM When is your block going to be done getting sleeved?
riceburner700 09-25-2007, 11:50 AM its been done and in my possession since 8-8-07. so getting close to 2 months
FlipHKD720 09-25-2007, 01:11 PM man this is a great build IMO. Whats your boost setup gonna look like hwen its all done?
riceburner700 09-25-2007, 07:46 PM top mount, aluminum piping welded together, big intercooler, gt30r, 3 inch downpipe with exhaust, shooting for over 400+hp if that takes over 35+ lbs of boost

Thats fu*kin sick! Did you change your valve springs and retainers already? What are you redlining at? I'm runnin 9psi on my d15b jdm, just over 200hp I believe. Next few months here im getting new rods, pistons, cam, valvesprings, and a 16g Evo III turbo (runs 11psi on stock internal wastegate, tuning with my Greddy Profec B Spec II, I think I can do it because my 14b turbo is easily tuned to 9psi from the stock wastegate of 3 psi), ARP Studs, hoping for 15-30psi, how much can stock sleeves take? I wont have the extra money to get it sleeved for awhile, but I want to run as much boost as possible on stock sleeves
riceburner700 10-26-2007, 12:20 PM you could probably get away with 350 safetly on stock sleeves, no real new parts just all my money is going into my business, im getting ready to buy all supertech valvetrain for the y7 head though. baught a hondata intake gasket though. updates are picking up, gonna order some oem goodies soon as well. keep your head up guys
riceburner700 11-02-2007, 01:45 PM Got my supertech valve train components today:D nice chunk of change

theblackpearl 11-04-2007, 03:36 PM at what horsepower would you consider changing the valvetrain necessary for a d16y7??
riceburner700 11-04-2007, 05:08 PM when you are exceding your factory redline its a good idea to c hange them, if you arnt its fine just the way they are
theblackpearl 11-05-2007, 08:26 PM how would i know if i am exceeding the factory redline (sorry, probably a noob question)
riceburner700 11-05-2007, 09:11 PM when you are dyno tuning your car, if the car makes power past 7200 rpms and isnt dropping off i would consider upgraded valve springs and retainers which i carry for your motor:D
GReddy_Civic 11-06-2007, 01:22 PM So hows the progress going? any feesable time until you're done?
riceburner700 11-06-2007, 02:15 PM looking like the deadline is by this next year depending on how my business goes. shes speeding up though. im just replacing every single part with brand new oem except the aftermarket stuff
turbo speeder 11-11-2007, 05:44 AM sweet i can't wait to seeit finish. I also will be following this thread!
:D
riceburner700 11-29-2007, 01:55 PM thanks man, updates next week
riceburner700 12-05-2007, 12:38 PM had the head milled, and a 3 angle valve job intake and exhaust for the .05mm over sized valves, found out one seat was cracked and had to be replaced. Just gonna send out my cam to gude or delta and once it gets back the head will be done.
couple pics

Mr Mobsta Man 12-05-2007, 02:11 PM Looks sexy. Did you do the head work yourself?
riceburner700 12-05-2007, 02:18 PM yeah, I make my living off doing performance head work
FlipHKD720 12-05-2007, 02:52 PM wow man this project has been going for over a year, cant wait to see it done though :) i dont feel so bad about my boost project now ;)
looing good. What are the pros of over sized valves? and is 1mm better then .5mm ?
Is that a hondata intake gasket?
riceburner700 12-09-2007, 04:20 PM depends on the port, cam, cylinder boring what kind of power your pushing, i was gonna go 1mm but decided to stay with .5mm so i still have a better rounded car in the power band, if your power band will be 6k+ then go with some 1mm. if not and want a fatter torque curve dont go over a .5mm. Plus 1mm oversized seat cutting is expensive.
Yes that is a genuine hondata gasket, they are the only ones i use in my head builds
riceburner700 01-25-2008, 02:41 PM got some parts in for the car/motor. figured i would update this thread a little bit. enjoy the new pics, more parts are coming in the mail so i will have more pics up next week. Have a couple kick a$$ looking parts that i have to finish up on the interior of the car before i will post pics just to tease a little.

felpro valve cover gasket
felpro exhaust gasket
obx lsd
ngk wires
ngk plugs
custom turbo cam
machined my rods
polished the crank
summit piston ring filer
oem timing belt
OEM rear main seal(installed)

Fiirkan 02-20-2008, 06:15 PM Awesome Dustin i can't wait to see this bitch together and dynoed:D
riceburner700 02-20-2008, 06:49 PM plans are to get some jdm front fenders with the orange side markers, get a carbon duckbill and trunk/hatch. repaint the car championship white and get a carbon lip for the front bumper as well
civicexracer 02-20-2008, 08:52 PM very nice build. why is the crankshaft laying on its side?? if u can, i'd check for crankshaft straighness before installing it..
riceburner700 02-21-2008, 09:18 AM its been balanced and polished two days before so its good to go, its been laying on its side like that for year and a half now before they balanced it and said it was perfectly straight
riceburner700 02-25-2008, 10:22 PM GOD! im so close to putting the WHOLE motor together and friday i called up Honda to order some main bearings to get things rolling on getting proper clearences and to my surprise all Green bearings are on backorder. So im stuck waiting for when they will come in, which i have no idea. i can taste how close the engine is to getting built:(:(:(. Been working on it for well over a year and probably a half now and i have a hill in the road that i have to climb:( but it will get there sooner than i had though:D

good luck though Dustin, i know this thing is gonna rip
megafandrew 02-26-2008, 08:32 PM nice man, I also have beenreading this thread. You inspire me to boost/build a d series motor[8D] I think mabey Ill pick up one to boost or boost this ol' b7,lol.
riceburner700 02-27-2008, 08:06 AM you should, even 300whp in a civic is pretty damn fast. but now im hungry for some real power hoping for well over 400whp thats reliable and can handle more. Im so happy im over building the motor. but i made a jig to hold my crank while i size up my rod bearings to keep things rolling. i hate not ordering parts or working on the car/motor so gotta keep pushing.
GReddy_Civic 02-27-2008, 01:26 PM i hate not seeing any progress flip:D jk! hurry up though! im gettin excited
riceburner700 02-28-2008, 03:18 PM heres my custom wooden jig so i can size up my rod bearings

riceburner700 03-06-2008, 06:21 PM little bit of an update on the motor build, main bearings came in from backordered. fit them in and there still a little on the loose side so i reordered some thicker bearings of browns and blacks and they will be in next week, ordered my rod bearings as well. Got my rods back from the machine shop as well which im excited about. so can literaly lick how close its to all going together. got my custom cam, ngk wires and plugs all installed, the whole top end is done and ready to be bolted on. got a timing belt, tentioner and a couple other miscilanious things.
Mr Mobsta Man 03-07-2008, 07:44 PM Noob question: Why do you need a jig?
riceburner700 03-07-2008, 07:49 PM its just easier sizing rod bearings out of the motor insted of the crank being laid into the block, plain and simple eiser to do
