as some of you may know i acquired a complete d16y7 with everything except the tranny and ecu..., i have started the strip down to the bare metal with the engine being fully disseminated and ready to be bored .020 over and the block either acid dipped or sandblasted with all the crap off of it.... i really want a fast civic for the street and crazy fast civic for the drag strip with slicks and the whole shabang. I am going boost, with full ems standalone down the road when the engine goes into the car..... well here are some pics of the cylinder head and how far i have gotten so far. I would have it fully dissasmbled and started the porting on it but i am still trying to get ahold of a valve spring compressor...This motor is gonna take me a little while to do because i am a strudent but wont be to long... hope to have something for it every pay check weither it be rods, pistons, bearings, gaskets, etc. i plan on having pics up after i install something new

yeah i want to see what a single slammer can really do with the right parts...and one hell of a tune of course:D:D

What does acid dipping do exactly?

Meta
08-30-2006, 02:43 AM
I have a feeling this a gonna be a GOOD LONG THREAD. Good luck!!!
Is the second pic after the sandblasting? It looks so much cleaner than in the first one...

riceburner700
08-30-2006, 09:10 AM
no acid dipping is were they dip like a engine block or cylinder head into a big tank of a certain type of acid and then they let it sit in there for so long and then when they remove it all the stains, dirt, grease anything that was on the metal will be gone, also works for coolent stuff stained around the cylinder walls and inside the engine... The second pic i didnt acid dip the valve cover, it originaly had no paint on it so i just used wheel acid on the top with a scrub brush to get the big stains out and then i renced that off with running water then took a sos pad to it and got into all the little cracks..I then sprayed off everything with compressed air and then let it dry what water was still on the valve cover. I got my engine temp paint at checker for like $5 or something close to that. I got the color "cast coat iron" by krylon. Looks a little bit like a mugen color but a little let brown. I wanted something different that i havent seen so this is why i went with this color. As for the silver "honda" letters on the top i just took a flat file and carefully stratched off the paint until the letters were all visible in shiny aluminum, just make sure you keep the file level and dont let it hit the actual valve cover or else it will scratch the paint...

more updates soon

yeah its coming alone nicely, i am still debating on weather or not going with 9.0.1 pistons or 10.0.1 for little less lag time, goal is about 400hp with this motor for the strip and like 300 for the street

finaly got the crank pulley bolt out and torn down the bottom end tonight, the number 4 piston dropped out of the cylinder after i disconnected if from the crank which is telling that thats probably why the motor lost a lot of compression, all the others took a little bit of work to wiggle out of there cylinders

I hear the crank pulley bolt is a bitch, how long did it take you to get that sucker out?

riceburner700
09-22-2006, 09:10 AM
well i actualy found the tool to do it. and i borrowed if from work, basicly one person holds the pulley with the tool and i had to hit the breaker bar with a huge 10 lbs mallit as hard as i could, almost broke the breaker bar but if you have a pretty decent sized breaker bar over a 1 1/2 you should be good, im gonna get a bigger breaker bar for this kind of stuff

riceburner700

gave in on friday at work while iw as in the snap-on truck so i baught the top of the line die grinder which was a pretty penny. Started porting/polishing the cylinder head today, so far i spent about 3 hours on the exhaust side and will probably spend another 2 hours tomorrow then its off the the intake and combustion chamber side. snap some pics which it is turning out really good so far looks so damn nice

riceburner700
11-13-2006, 11:20 PM
to be honest all my money is going into this build. i am building it paycheck by paycheck. my only bills are cell phone, credit card, snap-on account, car insurence, and gas. i really love d-series and want to see what one can do before i swap in like a b18c or h22 in a couple years when im ready to move onto something bigger and better. yeah i could of went already with a b-series and turbo and then meet my goal but how many d16y7's that are fully built running around? i havent seen one yet

i first baught a standerd abrasive cylinder head porting kit that has everything you need. i also baught a damn good how to port and polish dvd off ebay. if anybody is interested pm me. i work at an automotive shop that does everything from oil changes to heavy duty trucks and we have all the big name tool guys that come around so when snap-on showed up i went in and baught the best die-grinder they had which was a little more than i wanted to spend($240) but at least its almost payed for. That is how i have done it so far.:D:D

heres the dvd i baught

got a little waiger on the line at work today. i was talking to one of my friends(employes) at work and he seems to think that with my 1.6L i am not going to make over 300 whp, let alone 450whp out of the motor next year. i bet him 50 bucks i would and my other friend to. they think anything under basicly a 2.5L wont make sh*t for power.

so what do you guys think will i be able to make over 300whp? lol:D:D

side update: baught the d15b7 head from pegleg, have new headgasket, valve seals, intake/exhaust gaskets. gonna throw it on my car for now while im building my motor just for some more power. im gonna do a full port and polish with the head and install the new parts. do you guys want me to do a diy with pictures of how to do a b8 to b7 head swap?

i already tryed the whole mini-me thing and that went south so fast. i dont want to hear about how i should of done a vtec(mini-me).

01-11-2007, 12:47 AM
Sweet build, looks like both of us are going for similar power.:)

Since you've selected the Y7, check out this link. You DEFINITELY want to look into doing the oil pump mod, and you may need to notch the block for the rods (I'm not sure on the tuner toys).

http://www.theoldone.com/articles/d%5Fseries%5Fengine%5Fbuilding%5Ftips/

Check it out, last thing you want is for that engine to go because the oil pump sucks.[&:]

Good looking build so far though, looks like it's gonna be a fun time when you're all said and done. Oh, those guys who said you can't make 300whp out of a Dseries can go stuff it.;)

riceburner700
02-12-2007, 10:28 AM
well i fully hot tanked the head, dissassembled the whole rocker assembly and took out all the valves, ported and polished intake and exhaust, port matched the gaskets, brand new seals and gaskets. took the car apart last night and did the whole install including adjusting the valve clearance. First start up went really good she idles perfect and only jumps about 20 rmp's at idle. the only downfall but i knew it has to happen is that since the car was tuned for the 8 valve head it was running 14.7 at idle but as soon as .01 throttle was applyed it would go straight to lean and cut out. So the next step is streat tune the car so it can be driven lightly to my tuner and get it to work were i'm putting on a mandrel bend 3" piping from the turbo clear to the muffler (custom) with a flex pipe to keep rattles down. Valve cover is getting repainted from the ford blue thats on it now to the gun metal grey like the valve cover on the d16y7 that im building.

last ones are of the 16 valve installed

i know im gonna get sh*t for my wastegate open right above my filter but im ordering a flange so i can dump it to the ground dont worry lol..

update on the d15b7. I adjusted the fuel so i could rev it up and stay steady 13.1. As soon as you started to move the car would fall on its face. Couldnt figure out what it was i though my timing belt was off so i kept adjusting it, still nothing car sounded like a subaru sti no joke. Well i took out all the spark plugs and the #4 cylinder was soaked in gas, brand new spark plugs. So i went and checked the spark plug wire for high voltage and everything was cool. Next went to the distributor cap and checked the points inside. turns out the #4 point had heavy carrosion on it. So i cleaned them all off and put everything back together. The car starts and revs perfect. So took if for a spin and it builds boost at 2500rpms and has a ton of torque. next its off to work to make my mandrel 3" all the way back then hit the dyno for some tuning and repainting my valve cover the gun metal grey like the d16y7 head. gonna be real clean

Little update, the block is being shipped out to laskey racing this week for the BENSON sleeves to be installed. I am planning on buying laskey valves and having a 3 angle valve job done. Im ordering a mishimoto aluminum radiator along with a slim fal fan. The project is rolling along very nicely. got the ARPS in friday, also got some oem goodies which were expensive. Got SOOOOOOO much more to go but its gonna be done right the first time instead of having to go back and replace some part that failed from having 100,000+ miles on it. pics are up

Sweeet!

For the bay, I'd go black, it's more universal incase you end up switching exterior colors later. Tyler's engine bay is black and I didn't even notice the first couple times I saw it. Usually when the bay doesn't match the exterior it sticks out like a sore thumb

riceburner700

basbal123
07-14-2007, 07:34 PM
damn, y does it take so long to hide wires, what all do you have to do??

riceburner700
07-14-2007, 09:17 PM
i had to cut about 10 wires, extend them and connect them backgether, heatstring tap, then rapped it all in eletrical tap, them wire loomed it all up and nice so water doesnt get in it. Then i zip tied it to the frame, had to drill some small holes. it can be done a lot quicker if you just cut and extend, but you are gonna risk getting water in the wire connections depending on how you do it

how did you learn all this? You just graduated from high school and you aleady can rebuild your engine and know who and where to have work done that your can't or don't want to do. Just wondering how your learned all this?

riceburner700
07-15-2007, 08:47 AM
just learning from some threads on the internet and watching videos, i took a high school automotive class at front range community college when i was a junior, its basicly there automotive class but only 1/2 of it for high school students. I have messed around with my car a ton since i got it when i was 16. To tell you the truth i never realy payed attention in high school, I was never good at the whole grade school thing, i have a hard time remembering things in short term, But for some reason when it comes to cars apparently i know a ton and remember every detail short term and long term which is very bizar, If theres something i dont know like eletrical or mechanic i go and read up a little on it and what others have done then go for it. I also worked at an automotive shop helping techs work on european cars for a little under a year last year

good call^^

any who got my FAL fan today, had some troubles mounting it because the mounts on the radiator wernt in the perfect spot. also am about 90% done with painting the engine bay black. let me know what you think, STILL waiting for the block back from benson, they said they do s2000's, then b-series, then d-series, sh*ty way of doing business, it should be first come first serve, i almost told laskey to send my block to golden eagle but they said its first in line and the bseries are almost done., almost been 2 months now. If the block was back the bottom end would be build and done.

when you sleeve the cylinders, do they replace the whole cylinder part, meaning take out the four circles inside the gap from the rest of the block, or do they just add a surface layer to everything? when i look up sleeving websites, they only show the finished product, and of course they don't tell me how they do it step by step. so any info on how the companies actually perform the sleeving process will improve my knowledge, thankz

Good luck on the rest of what looks like the best and prettiest build i have seen. I hope to see some nice numbers and pics once its all set up.

Good job man, looking awesome...

if you dont mind me askin, how much do you have in the build so far and how much do you plan to have in at the end? Btw, I'm in love with this build, nice job and good luck

the benson block sleeves were $1025, cp pistons were $550, tuner toy rods $235, Arp bolts $150, all new oem parts and gaskets $350.

i am figuring between $6000 and $7000 including topmount and a gt30r, thats $2500 right there when the motor is in and running awesome, then the car has to get a paintjob(champ white), carbon fiber goodies. probably to much man lol. Im way over building everything .

theblackpearl
09-07-2007, 08:43 PM
is 235 for rods considered a good price?? what would be considered cheap or expensive for decent quality rods, that maybe can go up to 4 or 500 horses. and what other brands would you suggest??

riceburner700
09-07-2007, 09:33 PM
almost all h-beams are from the same manufacture, just when they get to eagle, scat, tuner toys they all do there own little things like bore the wrist pin, put in arp bolts etc. The scat or eagle rods are right around the $300 dollar range which can withstand high 500+ hp and high reving. If you can get ahold of the tuner toy rods with the s2000 bolts they go for 250 bucks and can handle the same amount of power.

theblackpearl
09-08-2007, 11:26 PM
how about these rods from tuner toys, they don't say anything about s2000 studs but they do say that they can take up to 700 hp, and i think that they are the official tuner toys site

riceburner700
09-09-2007, 06:35 AM
yeah thats the site, they come with the 8740 bolts which arnt designed to rev over 7000 i bolieve. they are good rods though

theblackpearl
09-09-2007, 03:39 PM
are those the rods that you bought??? the d16y7 engines that we have aren't meant to rev over 7000 anyways right??

riceburner700
09-09-2007, 05:20 PM
yes those are the same rods i have. The cam and intake are designed to have peak hp around 7500. I think the bolts can handle the extra couple hundred rpms. They are an awsome rod for the money, i am looking into buying the arp2000 bolts for them just for the extra insurence.

the factory reline for a d16y7 is 7200

little update just buying some tools, still have a few to get, i have two different micrometers not just the one 3-4" i also have a 2-3" pictured. i also found stronger manifold studs for relitively and the intakes are slightly longer for a hondata gasket, best nuts i could find as well. i know i didnt need them but what the hell they were about 25 bucks for the whole stud and bolt package

there precision tools to measure mainly gap to determin what bearings i need. Just engine assembly tools

When is your block going to be done getting sleeved?

man this is a great build IMO. Whats your boost setup gonna look like hwen its all done?

riceburner700
09-25-2007, 07:46 PM
top mount, aluminum piping welded together, big intercooler, gt30r, 3 inch downpipe with exhaust, shooting for over 400+hp if that takes over 35+ lbs of boost

Thats fu*kin sick! Did you change your valve springs and retainers already? What are you redlining at? I'm runnin 9psi on my d15b jdm, just over 200hp I believe. Next few months here im getting new rods, pistons, cam, valvesprings, and a 16g Evo III turbo (runs 11psi on stock internal wastegate, tuning with my Greddy Profec B Spec II, I think I can do it because my 14b turbo is easily tuned to 9psi from the stock wastegate of 3 psi), ARP Studs, hoping for 15-30psi, how much can stock sleeves take? I wont have the extra money to get it sleeved for awhile, but I want to run as much boost as possible on stock sleeves

riceburner700
10-26-2007, 12:20 PM
you could probably get away with 350 safetly on stock sleeves, no real new parts just all my money is going into my business, im getting ready to buy all supertech valvetrain for the y7 head though. baught a hondata intake gasket though. updates are picking up, gonna order some oem goodies soon as well. keep your head up guys

riceburner700

at what horsepower would you consider changing the valvetrain necessary for a d16y7??

riceburner700
11-04-2007, 05:08 PM
when you are exceding your factory redline its a good idea to c hange them, if you arnt its fine just the way they are

theblackpearl
11-05-2007, 08:26 PM
how would i know if i am exceeding the factory redline (sorry, probably a noob question)

riceburner700
11-05-2007, 09:11 PM
when you are dyno tuning your car, if the car makes power past 7200 rpms and isnt dropping off i would consider upgraded valve springs and retainers which i carry for your motor:D

riceburner700

looking like the deadline is by this next year depending on how my business goes. shes speeding up though. im just replacing every single part with brand new oem except the aftermarket stuff

had the head milled, and a 3 angle valve job intake and exhaust for the .05mm over sized valves, found out one seat was cracked and had to be replaced. Just gonna send out my cam to gude or delta and once it gets back the head will be done.

looing good. What are the pros of over sized valves? and is 1mm better then .5mm ?

Is that a hondata intake gasket?

riceburner700
12-09-2007, 04:20 PM
depends on the port, cam, cylinder boring what kind of power your pushing, i was gonna go 1mm but decided to stay with .5mm so i still have a better rounded car in the power band, if your power band will be 6k+ then go with some 1mm. if not and want a fatter torque curve dont go over a .5mm. Plus 1mm oversized seat cutting is expensive.

Yes that is a genuine hondata gasket, they are the only ones i use in my head builds

got some parts in for the car/motor. figured i would update this thread a little bit. enjoy the new pics, more parts are coming in the mail so i will have more pics up next week. Have a couple kick a$$ looking parts that i have to finish up on the interior of the car before i will post pics just to tease a little.

i am about %5 away from assembling the whole motor and bolting a tranny on it. With business taking off extremely quick i have a bunch more money and been buying parts everyweek it seems. well figured its about time for some updates before stage 3 of putting the whole motor together and in the car to start her up. things i have purchased since last up-date are:

felpro valve cover gasket
felpro exhaust gasket
obx lsd
ngk wires
ngk plugs
custom turbo cam
machined my rods
polished the crank
summit piston ring filer
oem timing belt
OEM rear main seal(installed)

its been balanced and polished two days before so its good to go, its been laying on its side like that for year and a half now before they balanced it and said it was perfectly straight

GOD! im so close to putting the WHOLE motor together and friday i called up Honda to order some main bearings to get things rolling on getting proper clearences and to my surprise all Green bearings are on backorder. So im stuck waiting for when they will come in, which i have no idea. i can taste how close the engine is to getting built:(:(:(. Been working on it for well over a year and probably a half now and i have a hill in the road that i have to climb:( but it will get there sooner than i had though:D

nice man, I also have beenreading this thread. You inspire me to boost/build a d series motor[8D] I think mabey Ill pick up one to boost or boost this ol' b7,lol.

riceburner700
02-27-2008, 08:06 AM
you should, even 300whp in a civic is pretty damn fast. but now im hungry for some real power hoping for well over 400whp thats reliable and can handle more. Im so happy im over building the motor. but i made a jig to hold my crank while i size up my rod bearings to keep things rolling. i hate not ordering parts or working on the car/motor so gotta keep pushing.

little bit of an update on the motor build, main bearings came in from backordered. fit them in and there still a little on the loose side so i reordered some thicker bearings of browns and blacks and they will be in next week, ordered my rod bearings as well. Got my rods back from the machine shop as well which im excited about. so can literaly lick how close its to all going together. got my custom cam, ngk wires and plugs all installed, the whole top end is done and ready to be bolted on. got a timing belt, tentioner and a couple other miscilanious things.

Mr Mobsta Man
03-07-2008, 07:44 PM
Noob question: Why do you need a jig?

riceburner700
03-07-2008, 07:49 PM
its just easier sizing rod bearings out of the motor insted of the crank being laid into the block, plain and simple eiser to do
