View Full Version : Loose shifter
jaredcarpenter 11-21-2006, 07:54 PM I am looking at a 94 civix ex 5spd to buy from a guy on autotrader, the shifter on it is really loose feelings. I can be driving in gear and wiggle it around. The tranny shifts good though. I was just wondering why it is doing it, how bad it is and how much it would cost to fix.
HARI. 11-21-2006, 08:59 PM the shifter bushings stabilizer need to be replaced. get energy suspension polyurethane bushings for replacement. should cost you no more than $15 bucks.

TheMoogly 11-21-2006, 08:59 PM You should buy the car and buy a short shifter and bushings from DC sports or Revo... like 75 bucks and you will have shorter throw when you shift... if the transmission is slipping out of gear that is expensive, but if it is the stick then you're looking at maybe 25 bucks to have someone tighten it down or put down a massive 100 and really be happy.

^^^+1
Like 15-25 bucks to get it fixed... simple simple
jaredcarpenter 11-21-2006, 10:41 PM Ok, cool. I just thought that something so wierd would be more expensive to fix. It just seems so out that it can be in gear, driving and wiggle it left to write from wall to wall. Like it was on the nuetral line.
sacicons 11-21-2006, 10:58 PM Ive got a set of bushings. 15 shipped. brand new Prothane.
Misha 11-21-2006, 11:22 PM Not to argue, but to add one more possible reason. I had slightly different experience on my 84’ (which has exactly the same design). Open link and look at the picture. In my case parts ## 4,5,12,24 were reduced to trash. Replacement solved the problem.

jaredcarpenter 11-22-2006, 12:07 AM The guy I am buying it from isnt exactly inclined mechanically, so how much should I bull**** him down to because of it? He wanted $1800 originally.
HARI. 11-22-2006, 12:27 AM hahaha tell him $1300 because the shifter costs $500 to fix

Buy these, they're mint :D
ProjectGSR 11-22-2006, 10:21 AM see my shifter is sooooo loose, and its cause the bolt holding it to the shift linkage is too small and too long. I put it in that way, now the shifter moves a good 3 to 4 inches back and forth when in gear...it freaks people out lots.
jaredcarpenter 11-22-2006, 09:08 PM Awesome, I buy the car knowing that everything should be fine and that it's going to be an easy fix. No, it's never that easy... on the way home it just decided to die in the middle of an intersection. The guy refuses to refund me.

How much did you pay?
jaredcarpenter 11-22-2006, 09:43 PM I paid 1600 for it, the body was mint and everything was real nice besides the loose shifter and what just happened.
ef4life 11-22-2006, 10:15 PM well describe wht happend to the dcar. did it just die? run out of gas? will it crank over?
Misha 11-22-2006, 10:17 PM Sound fair enough...
So, what happened, what did you try after, and what were results?
jaredcarpenter 11-22-2006, 10:37 PM Well, I was in fourth doing about 60 and was about to shift, and suddenly no power. I shift anyways, and nothing... go back to fourth and nothing. So light turns red, I turn the car off and start it. Won't start. I have to push it out of the intersection and there battery is fine of course. The gas gauge says half full, but I cant get under the car to tap the tank because it's nothing but puddles. The starter is fine too, it just wont start. I am hoping it's the gas... but the guy said he had gas in it, and so did the gauge. He was a dick about it saying that I broke it. Broke it in 1.3 mi and 10minutes, I don't think so. I'm going to go back with some gas anways on friday to see if it was that. If not, I'm ****ed.
Misha 11-22-2006, 10:54 PM Where there any hmmmm hiccups before it died? Or did it just die on the spot without any warning? What was the road profile – up, down, flat? Did you hear the fuel pump humming when you tried to restart? Was it trying to start or was it just cranking without any sign of life?
jaredcarpenter 11-22-2006, 10:58 PM The only thing was like 3 stop lights before that I went into third and it started like jerking I guess is the best way to put it. The road profile was completely flat and I didn't hear any humming, just alot of honking. Sounded like there was some life.
Misha 11-22-2006, 11:10 PM Sounds like it very well may be just a lack of gas. Definitely worth giving it a try.
jaredcarpenter 11-22-2006, 11:19 PM Yeah besides the bull**** I really like the car. I used to not like Hondas, and was stricticly Toyota, until my friend took me in his civic. I like them alot now.
jaredcarpenter 11-23-2006, 06:27 PM We went back today and it took my buddy a second to realize it was a timing belt, and as soon as we got the valve cover off and the timing belt out, it looked like someone chewed through it. It was the same ****ing belt for over a 90,000 miles or more. How ****ing ridiculous. It had so many cracks in it.
riceburner700 11-23-2006, 08:05 PM so did the timing belt break? or is it just really stretched and old aged cracked
jaredcarpenter 11-23-2006, 08:14 PM It was the original timing belt, it looked like a dogg chewed through it. And where all the teeth are it was all cracked. I don't think it was changed in a long time.
jaredcarpenter 11-23-2006, 10:30 PM So is the engine going to be totally messed up because of that?
riceburner700 11-25-2006, 09:00 PM if the timing belt didnt break just replace the timing belt, water pump, and tentioner and you are golden. if it broke you probably should start looking for either a rebuild of your cylinder head or a new used cylinder head
CivicSizeMe 12-01-2006, 11:10 AM That sucks. What are the odds that it would break then? Did the guy let you test drive it first or did you buy it without first driving it? Just wondering. I'm about to do the same thing with a used Honda purchase, so I'm interested to hear the end of this...
jaredcarpenter 01-04-2007, 12:39 PM Yeah he let me test drive it. I forgot to post about the end of everything, what happened is like... the water pump killed the timing belt in the long run. That asshole still never changed it. Well we put a new water pump on and a new timing belt and it started right up. It's not broken, it's a miracle. It runs like a champ. Seriously, the Honda Gods have blessed me. I really thought that something woulda hit when it snapped but idunno. Either amazing engineering or luck. He also sent me a check for $100. Thats about what it cost me for the timing belt and water pump plus some oil for an oil change. $1600 in the long run when he originally wanted $2400. It worked out for me. Hahah.
Misha 01-04-2007, 12:53 PM Glad for you, looks like you got a lucky car :)
