well i can see it to an extent. if you're really familiar with a particular vehicle and know what motors are offered one could probably tell a difference. just depends on the motors offered. if the 2 motors are different cylinders (like a 4 and 6 or 6 and 8, etc) totally believable. even with aftermarket exhaust you should be able to tell the difference between them. and if a car has forced induction it's usually pretty obvious. so i can see some feasability in it, but i was say it's an exception, not a rule

so youre saying that if i put a blown LS1 with test exhaust next to a blown LS7 with test exhaust, more than 1 out of 100 people would be able to point out which is which, beyond a reasonable doubt?

If you reved them I could tell w/o a doubt in my mind......of course this is stock vs stock and with a blower. But I do agree noway could he have told what size it is by the sound. All that can be assured is that it is a 364ci or bigger engine as I dont see chevy ever dropping the 5.3/4.8 in it. And it is going around that the new Comaro will have a 6.2 in it(as will everything on the new rwd platform) The new Pontiac G8 will have one and it is said they will offer the G8 with a M6 and in coupe version.

true, but this person in question heard a blown engine, and he knew that it was a 6.2? i saw the 08 viper mule up close and personal, including under the hood over a year ago...maybe two years ago now. i knew what i saw, but i didnt post it as fact on any of my sites, although a few people asked me, i commented on what i saw and knew for a fact. there was a rumor that it would be a twin TB, 8.4L with a bigger intake manifold than the current viper (8.3L). I knew that it had the bigger manifold in mule form, and i knew that the hood would be different. i also knew that the engine had twin throttle bodies, but i didnt know whether or not it had an extra 0.1L of displacement. Hell, I run an SRT info site, and I still dont post anything that isnt comfirmed as a fact, and if I post anything that might not be 100% true, I will mention again and again that it is "popular opinion" or "just a rumor". Here is my sig from DF: quote:
http://www.SRTBlog.com - The latest SRT news without the pointless rumors claimed as fact. As I make a living writing about cars, it drives me nuts that SO MANY people who consider themselves "automotive journalists" spread rumors just to appear to have a "scoop". Part of the problem is that many "automotive journalists" are people who went to school to learn to write, so they have excellent sentence structure but little-to-no automotive background or knowledge. Many people assume that "since so and so at blahblahblahblog.org said that the new camaro will fly, it must be true", and that isnt the case. But since so much of the online media has no conscience or regard for the truth, it just gets worse and worse. Thats exactly why I write the way that I do, with nothing that I didnt see with my own eyes if it isnt official, and the rest is official. Had I seen an engine ID plate on the viper mule that I got to look at that stated that it was an 8.4L, I would have stated that the one that I saw had an 8.4L, but it did not, at least not that I saw. The people who permitted me to view it were not too keen on letting me look for long...I wasnt even "allowed" to take pictures. But then again, what the hell do I know...ive only been in a new Camaro and Challenger once each.
