View Full Version : Game Over - New Pics pg.11

As some of you already know, I blew the turbo D yesterday. I wish that I could say I wasripping through the twisties grabbin gears, but instead, I was just switching lanes on the freeway, and casually downshifting into fourth.

What happened you may ask? I don't know yet. Until I have time to really get in there and check **** out, I won't know. All I know is that I grabbed fourth gear, eased into it, then got into it a little harder to grab some boost. The second I touched boost.....BANG! Glanced into my rear view only to see the sad sight of smoke, oil, and debris.

Onto the pics, and an explination of what I DO know so far...

When I pulled over and started checking **** out. I noticed that there was oil everywhere in the bay, never a good sign.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a209/Forty04/DSC00438.jpg

Looked down, and saw my oil drain line just kinda chillin..
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a209/Forty04/DSC00442.jpg

*insert lots of screaming and obscenities here...*

I got down on one knee, looked under the car, and this is what I saw..

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a209/Forty04/DSC00439.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a209/Forty04/DSC00441.jpg

Remarkably, the bulk of the engine bay managed to stay pretty clean. (I'm trying to think of positives, to keep me from going insane...)
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a209/Forty04/DSC00437.jpg

I don't really know what to say guys. I'm more depressed about it than anythign. I'm not really mad at all, just feel like I've been punched in the gut... Luckily for me, I'm married to the coolest chick to ever walk the face of the earth. While waiting for the tow truck driver to get there, Lori asked "what are you going to do?" I told her that I'd just sell everything that was worth a **** (turbo, suspension, and whatever else..) and use that money to buy a new motor. Her response damn near brought tears to my eyes. She said "No, you've worked way too hard on all of that to just up and sell it. We have money in our savings for situatoins like this, we'll get you a new motor." How ****ing cool is that?

In conclusion, most of you know damn well how my mind works. With this motor being toast, theres only one thing left to do, build something better.

Thanks for reading.

I'm still a little confused as to what happened... How much of your stuff is ruined?

Forty04
01-29-2007, 08:11 AM
Like I said, I won't know until I dig in and check it all out.

After the incident, I had the car towed home, went inside, and proceeded to get absolutely anhilated drunk..

That's what I do when I get upset... and I get upset easily. Haha.

Is it too soon to think about driving with a new engine?

Like... the same way it is going on a date after you have a bad breakup?

You know, that's an excellent way to put it. :)

I've had plans of putting a z6 in there for a while now, I guess I've got good enough reason now.

[sm=partyparty.gif] <---- That was Forty and I last night. I actually did get trashed for him after I got off the phone.

I wasnt pleased to hear the news... not at all. I REALLY wanted to see the super d at the dragon however I was assured I would still see it.

I was hoping that Darryl was joking last night. But like you said on msn rock a Z6 for a while then build over the winter and comeback with vengence...

Marty summed it up pretty well for me on AIM, and it makes perfect sense. Aluminum oil pan was weakened from having the fitting welded onto it, it got brittle, and broke. All my oil went flew out, and the motor went down right after...

hey, I can get you a D16Y7 block CHEAP if you want to go that route.

mybrokenblinker
01-29-2007, 11:26 AM
hey forty im really sorry that happened, but i have a quick question...have you considered doing swap to a more powerful engine and forgetting about the boost? I mean that might be a more reliable route with near the same speed (i was thinking h22 or b18c1). Just an idea, I can understand if you are addicted to boost though:D

Forty04
01-29-2007, 11:29 AM
Well, I have considered it, but cost wise it's just not feasible. I would really like to give the boosted D another go, I know I can do better next time.

Marnie, I'll keep you posted on whether or not I'll need the y7. It's doubtful as I'd really like to run a z6, but its good to have a few options.

riceburner700
01-29-2007, 11:34 AM
trial and error man. what im confused on is if petes motor had the z6 oil pump and fortys had the y8 that took a dump then which oil pump is the best out there?

mxs
01-29-2007, 11:41 AM
you could do a Y7 block and Z6 head.

Marty
01-29-2007, 11:42 AM
Pete did not have any oil pan issues. I am not saying that the pan is a for sure thing as far as to blame for this but it's a damn good start being it has a hole that is centered around the oil return line.

Yeah man I had one, but it wasn't hooked up. However, even if it were hooked up, it wouldnt have done me any good. It only took a matter of about a second for the pressure to rise and pop the pan. I doubt even the best of reaction times would have saved it... But, I will have that bitch hooked up to the new motor, juuuuust in case

Please guys, don't get the wrong idea about this. The last thing I want to do is deter any of you from trying to go boost. Learn from my mistake, and realize that there are hundreds of little things that "could" go wrong at any time. This is exactly why we preach "research research research". The more you know, the better off you'll be. The best thing you can do for yourself, and your motor, is to cover ALL of those bases before boosting. You can bet your happy asses that my next motor will be fully prepared for boost.

cliff notes: Don't fear boost, be prepared for it

Today is the day that I will know for sure what's up. Theres a SUPER SLIM chance that my internals could be okay. I'm going to drop the oil pan and if everything inside looks to be intact, I'll try tossing a new oil pan on there, and see if she'll start. It's worth a shot. Even if it does start though, I'm still picking up the new motor, putting it in the garage, and building that bitch

Roto
01-30-2007, 09:22 AM
Tony, I don't think there was a spike in oil pressure at all...I mean even if there was it woudn't be a cause of the return like tearing a piece of the pan out like htat. My money is on a pan that got brittle and the line simply fell out along with a piece of the pan. Also I 80% sure that the motor is ok.

UPDATE: It's definitely game over for this motor, at least the bottom end. My computer at home is a piece of **** and wouldnt allow me to upload the pics, so I won't be able to post them until later today. But believe me, it's not pretty.

Apparently I snapped the rod right off of the crank. It shot down, taking a chunk out of the piece that holds the crank, pinching my oil pickeup shut, and making its exit out both the front and back of the oil pan. I haven't found any of the piston/rod pieces yet, but I assume they're sitting at the bottom of the oil pan. I got kinda pissed yesterday, said **** it, and just went inside for the night. I'll drain the rest of the pan today and see what kind of goodies I can find inside.

blah, Today begins the search for a new motor...

if i'm not mistaken a f20b is out of an euro accord type r and i think its a destroked h22 and a f20c is out of a s2000. correct me if i'm wrong

Kedawei
01-31-2007, 05:52 PM
The F series is great, butthey're heavy due to their iron block (heavier than a H). It's close to H22 spec, but slightly smaller stroke and bore. I've read they have great potential because of their head design, at least the SOHC (think Bisimoto). I'm not sure about the DOHCs though. The F20B itself has high compression (around 11:1) and really, reallyclose gearing. I think it was in both EDM and JDM Accord Type Rs.

I honestly wouldn't pay more than 300 for a Dseries engine, if you're paying more than that you're paying way too much. People throw away Dseries engines, there's no reason you can't pick them up for cheap. FULL SWAPS (axles, ECU, everything) 600-700 maybe, but not just a block and a head.

Forty04
02-19-2007, 09:40 AM
Average I've seen thus far in my search is 175-250 + shipping. I'll be just fine in that department, I've just got to find someone willing to follow through and actually ship the damn thing..

Pete, I've learned everything I know by just getting in and doing it.. I know this swap isn't nearly as complex as yours, but this has been a walk in the park so far. *knocks on wood*

forty, you're best bet may be to have an engine shipped from cali.

doods there throw D-series engines away left and right after upgrading to B/H/K series engines.

you'll just have to pay more for shipping though.
