Oh, and as for being in a band, I haven't played in one since high school. But from the time I was 16 until I moved away from my hometown, our band used to play shows at the park, bars in canada, etc.. good times.
Now a days me and my buddy Chris like to just chill and rock out. I haven't played lately, but hopefully I'll have my music room set up soon and we can start recording some stuff again. Heres a shot of my last music room, the one in the new house will dominate

Pretty much if it has a guitar... i listen to it. Rap and all that crap I can't stand... no talent, except for some exceptions like Gym Class Heroes and what not. Rock, alt, punk, some emo, screamo, is where i'm at.
Relient K, A7X, TBS, Brand New, Breaking Benjamin, DragonForce, 30 Secs, RHCP, TSL, Yellowcard, Cute is what we aim for, bayside, halifax, all time low, RJA, the academy is..., motion city soundtrack, and the list goes on...
ps- dragonforce has 2 of the best guitarist ever
I play guitar and piano myself, been trying to start a band... kinda had an acoustic guitar band but my singer was talking about me behind my back so I told her that its over... esp since she was only singing and i was writing the music/lyrics/melody. I'm self taught, havent really been playing that long... but i can play a good amount of stuff.

Blackmetal is truly the "hardest" type of music. search black metal on wikipedia and you will see why. I dont like when people think disturbed and godsmack are the heaviest bands. As of right now, blackmetal is heavier than any music created, including death metal, or speed metal. And i also hate hardcore

operating a "sound machine" is musical talent...iv been playing drums (and pretty much every other instrument casually aswell) for 11 of my 18years in rock bands and such...recently iv started getting into computer based music on the side and i can tell you its not easy. If you know of Beck, who is often called a musical genius, he is a multi-instrumentalist who uses computers alot in his music. And i challenge you to write music like his and groups/artists like Ratatat, morcheeba, massive attack ,RJD2, Nick Warren, Beck,Postal Service ,Champion, DJ Shadow...and dont say you would challenge them to play guitar, because id bet most of them can.
Personally i actually do like 95% of types of music...
my favs are:
Rock(and i use the term generally): red hot chili peppers (best band ever),TOOL ,coldplay, Hendrix, Audioslave, Rage against the machine, Mars Volta, Metric, modest mouse, pink floyd, nirvana, john mayer, jack johnson, james blunt, avenged sevenfold
hip hop: mos def, talib kweli, the roots, the game, Dr Dre, beastie boys, eminem
electronica/trance: (all of the listed above), Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk
country plays on the radio at work and i like it
and i also like alot of Ray Charles, Al green, Marvin Gaye, miles davis, BB king and stuff...blues and jazz and stuff

I agree. However, Tony and Tyler know first hand that I listen to a lot of electronica... however its not the tacky techno chit that you typically hear. The people behind these 'sound machines' I listen to actually have talent and refuse to remix some britney spears crap of gwen steffani. Hell, 99% of the stuff I listen to you all have never heard of or even begin to fathom of who makes it. oMost of them come out of Italy, Brazil, Germanyand France anyway.

how do you figure...sellout is a word ignorant people throw around to make themselves sound and feel like they are too good for mainstream music.
in most cases (especially lately with the comeback of "real music") bands who go mainstream do it because they work hard and have talent...
tell me how they are sellouts...in your moronic sense of the word

If you think that making up some catchy riffs and some gay lyrics that dont mean a thing to them is busting your ass, then bravo red hot you rock. But in our case they dont. They dont give a **** about there songs and they really dont give a **** about der music. They are ****ing dicks to der fans . I think they are great musicans, but they just dont care anymore. They just want to make a come back. Thats all. So you listen to them, i dont anymore. Looks at scare tissue, and really look into the song, and look at some of there new stuff. It is a big difference...

Ill agree with zoso to an extent. RHCP were friggin awesome back in the day. Yea they got a few good hits now but I own the new album. Frankly, it sucks ass. It sounds like ti was whipped together in about 2 hours. Mind you I listen to a lot of electronica stuff but I listen to a huge amount of of other music. Youll find me rocking a remix of Bebel Gilberto one minute then the next Our Lady of Peace the next.

in reply to zoso...
the old rhcp sang about "catholic school girls rule" "real men dont kill coyotes" not exactly deep....the music was basically hard funk bass lines and anthony sing/rapping/talking over top with helel slovak doing whattever the hell he wanted
if you listen to stadium arcadium you will find alot of deep songs...great song writting (isnt writting a catchy guitar riff what guitarists strive for??), back to old style bass lines (funk!) and deep lyrics (they just arent as obvious). it might sound irrelevant to you, but to anthony keidis it could be very meaningful. Singers use alot of symbolism and metaphors in lyrics to tell their own stories, that we cant always understand. PS you say scar tissue and what happened to the funk...do you know what funk is? because there is none in scar tissue
and is response to forty... im not questioning your musical skill or knowledge, i personally don't think kirk hammet is that great a guitar player, im more of a fan of guys like clapton, hendrix, stevie ray vaughn and john frusciante. his playing was cool back then and dont get me wrong it is still sick...but metal guitar has advanced so much in the past few years it seems to me hes been left in the dust by some unreal players. but thats besides the point... in regards to trance i agree, learning to be a great guitar player is much harder than learning how to make trance. But other styles like electronica and the more organic styles of computer based music are very difficult and you need a strong musical backround to be able to write every part of a song.
and yes, iv recorded alot of music (every penny iv ever made has gone into my studio downstairs which is completely soundproofed, which includes yamaha stage custom drums, full peavey pa, an american strat, takemene and yamaha acoustics,a crate effects amp ,fender jazz bass, roland keyboard, bell piano ,korg synth, macbook loaded with alot of software, behringer mixer recorder ,korg midi controller, and 9 mics of all sorts)...
i have alot of originals ranging from nickleback style rock, to synth rock ,to accoustic folk rock, to electronica/breakbeat recently , never even played a cover in front of an audience before. Iv won 4 battle of the band type shows and am just getting into the bar gig scene. trust me iv played and recorded alot of music.

The only type of music that i really enjoy is something that puts you in the mood to drive fast and fight someone. I really don't like the type of music that makes you chill.

please....say no more [:'(]
And I never said Hammett was god,I simplyused him as an example because the rest of the guitar players i know of, most others have probably never heard of. And do you know the what the main reason is as to why these newer guitar players seem faster than Hammett? It's because Hammett has never resorted to alternate picking...ever
The rest of the guitar players you named are on my altime favorites list, but its apples to oranges as far as themvs. metal guitarists.
...now I'm just babbling, I'll stfu

I listen to just about any kind of rock. I mostly listen to local bands (since I hear alot more local music, being in Memphis) but I like bands such as Linkin Park, Taking Back Sunday, Lamb of God, Chiodos, Red Jumpsuit, Tesla, Chevelle, Seether, AFI (saw them in concert not too long ago.) and a bunch more local bands from other states.

I like just about any kind of rock ranging back from Sabbath to the nu metal of today. Favorite bands include Avenged Sevenfold, Sublime (40oz ftw), Incubus, G&R, ACDC, Shadows Fall, Adema, Greenday, Flogging Molly, RHCP (every song, every album kicks arse imo), Breaking Benjamin, Bullet for my Valentine, and whatnot.
I do Enjoy a little rap, in rap I dont care about how "deep" the lyrics are. Rap is about the sound, imo. Older Paul Wall, TI, Lil Wyte, Wu Tang, Busdriver, 3-6 ( dont like the chicks that were in 3-6, it sounds bad when women try to be hard, they end up yelling the whole time they're trying to rap and its just a chore to listen to them), Ludacris, Nappy Roots..I guess I like southern rap mostly, but I'll lisen to any rap with a good flow.
edit: oh chit, I just realized how old this thread is, my bad
