Are 1991-1995 or 1996-2002 Saturn SL2 or SC2's(theseones have DOHC)fast, well faster than a D16. When I was surfing the net a few days back I watchd some Saturn vids and one had like 300+ hp and another beat a 4th gen Camaro SS. Also my fellow car geek at school has like a '99 SL2 "APC Edition" and he says it's turbod. One night I checked his windows and I didnt see a boost gauge or controller(he said he had one on his dash) in sight. should I believe this or not

I was in my Formula one day(like a year ago or so) and had one drop back like 10-12 cars on me and do a ricer flyby. I was doing about 40mph or so and waited till he got to my rear quater panel(I'd say he was at about 75mph or so) and then I went to 2nd gear and hammered on him. He got to about my front fender before I made up for the momentum he had from gaining speed then I pull on him like a freight train and had about 5 cars on him by 100 to 110mph.

Against a stock/bolt on D16 I'd about bet on the saturn as they are 1.8's and have a broder tq curve. I'd say a LS Integra could pull on them though.

My wife drives an 01 sc2 auto.. Its got decent get up and go, I'd be willing to bet thata manual version would walk a stock d16

correct, but redline is equivalent to the Si in the Honda line up in terms of trim level

SL/SL1/SL2/Redline v DX/LX/EX/Si

My buddy used to have a SC2 about a month ago (which he messed up somehow and totaled it) and we did a few fun races and I have to say they can keep up with a D16Z6 but then again that was when I first started learning stick so I probably could smoke him if he still had it.

Correct me if i am wrong, but the redline and cobalt SS (supercharged) are pretty much the same car.

not like honda, but we get by... used to be slim pickings for us Ion RL drivers, but with the release of the cobalt in 05 we started getting more support. we had no tuning capabilities untill about 6-7 months ago, but now we have it all! I actually just blew up 4 weeks ago, and am currently re-building... shes gonna be a monster!

and yes, the cobalt ss/sc is the same platform and drivetrain as the Ion redline, but the Ion weighs a couple hundred pounds less.

but to answer the origional post. no, the sl's and sc's are not fast imo... like any car they can be made fast, but i would put them about the same level as a civic or 4 cyl accord.

"Fast" is relative.

To say that something isnt fast, there is generally some comparison made. if you drive a stock yugo, any saturn is probably blinding fast. To me, the only fast cavabalt or saturn that ive seen was running outlaw FWD at nopi. I dont consider any of my cars to be fast. 8s is fast. ;)

with street legal cars i consider anything sub 14 is ok,12-13 pretty damn quick, and anything sub 12 is fast, and once you break 10 and get into 9sthat's next level fast. strictly strip cars are a little different IMO, yeah they're still fast, just takes a little more for me tosay"wow, that's impressive"

This kid in one of my classes has a stock SL2, and there was a nice mustang GT outside the window of the class, and he was talking about how he could smoke it. He was also saying he's about to buy some "Air-Turbos" Whatever that means..

Maybe there was an APC edition in the 95-02 SL2's, but I need to look into it

APC was the only tuning game in town for the 1st gen Saturns. They had the only +hp kits around. This is when the "factory tuning" craze started taking off (2001?), and GM jumped on it, inking a deal with APC to produce a limited number of SC2s with APC bolt-ons as the "APC Edition" -- I think they even had unique paint from the factory. Anyway, yeah, some Saturns are pretty fast, stock 1.9L DOHCs make 124HP & weigh 2400 lbs, so they're comparable to an EX civic (right? about 2400lbs, 126HP?).

The major problem with the original Saturn engines is that they used a lost-foam casting process that made the engine components very weak. It takes a lot of care to boost / tune a Saturn. Usually more time than it's worth.

umm the lost foam process is used a lot, not just by saturn. the ecotec block is the same way, and that is proven to be strong as hell. and it takes time to boost a saturn because noone does it, so it doesn't have the aftermarket support for tuning that a honda does. a turbo kit is a turbo kit no matter what car its on, its just in the electronics.

i had a 1996 saturn sc2 5 spd and it would easily pull on my civic which is a d16z6 but the dseems much more durable i went thru 3 saturn engines before i got my honda

who would win? how exactly do you race quality? damn ricer.
bring your "honda that is tuned right" anytime, and ill be more than happy to humiliate you with my tupperware on wheels.

and yes the ecotec block is foam cast, but its a beast! GM has a 1000hp build book onthe stock ecotec block.
