all of my vehicles are currently paid off, and i will be making payments on a new car within the next 18 months, barring any health issues, sudden financial drains, etc.

I think people who only buy used cars are crazy...especially performance cars.  my current DD was purchased new, and while its no ferrari, ive seen them driven into the ground.  unless the car is dirt cheap, or it includes a comprehensive warrarny, ill never buy a used car. you dont know whats been done to it...and even with maintenance records, youre only taking their word for it.  I coudl very quickly put together full records since the day it was new for my 02 cobra and they would look perfectly believable...

i dont own a cobra, and there were no 2002 cobras sold in the US.  but i could still come up with receipts to prove that mine was well maintained.  id rather pay 43000 for a 300c srt8 fresh off the line, (that i know has a warranty and im the first person to beat it up) than pay 20,000 for a 2002 firebird...i have no idea how badly the redneck(s) who owned it before me beat it....even things like wrecks can be covered up if someone wants to hide it badly enough.  when i buy a car, i want to know how how many times there have been huge smokey burnouts done...i want to know how much times its been bounced off the rev limiter...etc.

and of course new cars arent technically worth what they cost...youre paying 30,000+ dollars for what started as a couple grand worth of steel.  but, what choice do you have? drive old cars forever?

I honestly have no problem doing that and I do agree you never know what a car has been through but in the same sense I am not going to buy a new car for the sake of having a new car. Buying new from a dealer to me is just such a bad investment as right when you drive it off the lot you lose $1500 or $2000 from tha value. Then on top of that auto companies are getting ever more anal about what you can do to your car and still retain the warrenty. I know it is nice to have a warrenty but as it stands now I have no desire to own a car and not mod it to my likeing on top of that I refuse to take a kick in the balls from dealer mark ups, fake incentive plans/sales, or go through having to deal with cocky ass salesman that know a tenth about any given car that I do.

Yea I will keep buying used, I have worked on my cars for as long as I have been driving so no need to change now.

Some people don't have the option of buying a new car. There is a vast array of socio-economic cross-section on this forum. It is truely a luxury to be able to afford and enjoy the pleasures of owning a brand new vehicle. I have never owned a used car or motorcycle, boat or anything.  But, I was able to do it. Some people I work with make twice as much as I, and they still would prefer to buy used under the " I don't want to take all the depreciation" argument. Very few cares "appreciate" anyway.  If you pick and choose what vehicle you want, and take good care of it, it will typically last a considerable time. The depreciation hit only comes to bear if you are trading in or flipping cars frequently. Who wants an abused vehicle? Nobody should, but you have to live within your means. So, Patrick, you are one of the fortunate ones. ( I consider myself fortunate also ).Sh!t, I better be where I'm at by MY age!!! People do stumble across some gems out there in the used car arena, too, and can make themselves quite a ride, rivaling any off-the-showroom specimens and then some! That's the beauty of the car enthusiast hobby to me !

i dont want it to seem like i have only owned new cars.  i have bought used vehicles, but they were beaters...other than my stratus, ive never paid more than 4 grand for a car. the white car was 400 bucks. my truck was 500.  another used car that i bought was the bmw, which was also VERY VERY cheap...i think that we paid around 2100 for it.  i see people who pay 15,000-20,000 for a car, and i think that its crazy.

marty, one of the reasons that i am all for buying new, is that i have worked in the industry long enough that i dont pay markups.  i have family that is retired GM, so we get a big discount on them...we also have retired and current employees of DCX as friends and family, so even if its only getting a friend to sell me a car as low as he can, its still less than most people pay. my stratus was stickered at something like 26,000, and i bought it a week after i graduated from college.  in my bickering with the salesman, i got it down around 21 or so. still alot of money, yes, but when i see these people who pay 10,000 for a used ranger, and then have to spend a couple grand here and there...its crazy to me...and i wouldnt even have to pay to fix things as i can do most work myself.  also, with the warranty, the moss magnuson act protects people who want to modify their vehicle, and nowadays, more and more companies are offering factory performance stuff.

smokem, did you buy the GN new? if so, thats awesome...you dont meet many people anymore who hold onto things.  the white car was my first, 13 years ago now.  while i know what you mean about people who bounce from car to car...im too much of an enthusiast to do that..when i buy a vehicle, even a beater, i to so because i liek the vehicle to some extent, and i plan to get the most out of them. i bought the stratus rt because i really liked the body style, and i find the car incredibly comfortable...it was between that, or wating for the srt4, and the srt4 isnt very comfortable for long drives...i have done small things to my car, and while its not as fast as id like, i still enjoy the car...i dont think that enough people really enjoy their cars anymore...

Yeah, my GN was purchased new 10 August 1987. It was a present to ME.  My window sticker said ADM $5000.  I said if that's additional dealer markup then take it in nickels and stick them up your azz! I got it for $21k. I had purchased a fully loaded Nissan SEV6 4x4 from the same dealer so I was "car poor" for a while. The GN was $444.42/ month and the Nissan was $438.15 . Plus the insurance and sh!t it was over a grand a month just for the cars. I was lucky to be a 31 year old making decent $$$ as a Satcom Engineer at the time, and my side business "paid" for the cars. I bought a 1989 Chevy S10 4x4 Ext Cab and ran it till 2000 with 275,000 miles, sold it for $3000 and bought the 2000ZR2 4x4. Hopefully, I'll get the same mileage or better. it has 80k already. This December, I walked in to the Subie dealership and told the salesperson ( how PC) that if they couldn't negotiate the deal for my wifes 07 Forrester then get someone in this room who could. I squeze them like a grape to the point where they say, "You're willing to not buy this car for xxxx dollars?" and I comeback and respond saying , "You are willing to lose this sale for the same amount". I always get hooked up. Cash is king. No bullsh!t from sleazy salespeople. F**k them all. Sell me the FN car and get lost!  They will eat most people up and exploit the least able to afford their games with hidden insurances/warranties/pricing and other tom-foolery.

Here is an example of dealership BS, that people dont try to get around.

when i bought my stratus, there was an additional charge of 900 dollars for a sunroof.  It was not included in the price of the RT package.  I told them to order me one that didnt have a sunroof, and take the 900 dollars off.  They told me that it had to come with a sunroof, as they all did; excluding it wasnt an option.  I told them that I would talk to some other dealerships about that, and they quickly knocked off that 900 bucks.

If you push enough, they can make just about anything happen...while they will often make comments about how they cant go lower (meaning they wont make any commission) salesmen still get bonuses for sales volume, so even if they dont make money on a given sale, they still benefit from it...also, around certain times of year, they run specials for the salesmen where they get an automatic flat rate for every car sold, on top of the commission (typically 20%-ish of sale over cost.).

i didnt make my original point well.  i understand buying used cars...what i dont understand is people who get cars that are a few years old, and make payments on them.  I woudl rather drive a beater that cost me 500 bucks, than pay a couple hundred bucks a month for a car that is already worn out...but i do understand that its not an option for everyone.

There is also the option of leasing, for people who dont wish to modify...although I would never lease.

I got my car for like 15k after dealership fee's and extended warranty.  When i got the car though it was a 2000 with only 26,000miles on it.  It was a little high i guess being a 4yr old car, but i'll tell you what, the damn thing is still impressing me.  It is about to roll over 100,000 miles and the only thing that has gone mechanically is a leaky tube that i replaced.  Now i have replaced normal wear and tear items such as brake pads/rotors, tires, 1 clutch, but besides that everything running great.  If you are going to purchase used, just take your time and inspect carefully.

if i were to buy a used car for an amount which would required financing and payments (anything over about 8 grand), i would have to be getting a SMOKIN' deal.
Right now, I am waiting on the new dodge challenger.  if dodge drops the ball and makes it one of their high priced limited edition vehicles, we will probably look into a 300c srt8.

however, weve talked to a few dealership people who said they are desperate to get rid of srt10 rams right now, and i met someone who is leasing one for like 280 a month!!  i was told that there could be a great deal worked out for a sale, but i dont want another truck.

Haha, K20 boosted eh. That'll be around 300 hp? I dunno...
He brought the car into our shop today. He wanted me to freaking bleed and check the brakes or something....probably just pissed off cause I said "Rich Fatass" to him in the morning. I refused to check his brakes and he went and told the teacher. DAMN. This kid knows nothing about cars.
