Default 5w-20??

My wife just bought a new 07 Civic. The manual says use 5w-20 oil, and does not list any oil change intervals, just follow what the oil life moniter says. Si oil spec is 5w-30.

What do you guys think? Any problem with warranty if I switch to 5w-30. I don't care about whatever bit of gas mileage increase there might be. I would rather protect the engine, she keeps her car forever. I always domost of my own maintenance, including oil changes, how will that affect any future warranty issues? What about Amsoil and Mobil 1 with extended oil drain intervals and the Honda warranty?

New to this forum, if there is a place where this has already been beat to death, just point me in that direction. I don't care to get into any debate over oil, just the effect on engine and warranty.

no it wont void the warranty. depending where you live, most people use 5w30, or 10w30

Use what it says to use for that vehicle, or contact a dealer/manuf. if you have any questions. Most civics use 30 weight, but apparently not all. These oils are quite different.

use 5-20. the newer engines have tighter engine tolerances.

it costs the same as 5-30 so it won't hurt your pocketbook any and you'll be following manufacturers maintenance requirements should something go wrong with your engine.

I don't agree with that. Get your oil tested. VI won't start to shear on non-synthetic even at 10k miles. I used tochange mine at 5k because of crap filters, and because of the way I drive. If it weren't for that though I would have taken them to 10k without worries. I'm on synthetic now changing at 7500 because of crap filters. I haven't tested it (Mobile 1 5W-30) to see how it does, as I only recently made the switch. I intend to though.

Fleet cars change their plain old non-synthetic every 15k-30k miles.
