View Full Version : b16b vs b18c5
Roost3r 02-14-2005, 08:39 PM i know the specs on each motor but im wondering if anyone had personal input on the difference
for those who dont know...
b16b is the civic -r motro and the b18c5 is the teg. r motor..
Kappa22 02-14-2005, 08:42 PM Torque and CR (B16B has 10.8:1, JDM C5 has 11.1:1)
I've never done a B16B swap, but it would be almost identical to a JDM Type R swap.
Roost3r 02-14-2005, 08:49 PM hehe..didnt i say i knew the specs on each lol...:D
i mean i just mean does either feel quicker or stuff like that.. i mean it is a kinda stupid because specs are gonna tell u which is faster. but from anyone thats go the b16b motor??
Kappa22 02-14-2005, 08:52 PM Crap. My bad. I should have paid more attention to the post. Oh well. Uh, off the top of my head, I don't think anyone on here has/had a B16B (they're usually pricey and hard to get) but I'll let them speak for themselves...
Roost3r 02-14-2005, 08:57 PM yeah i know a place that gets shipments of em 2 times a month..but they only have like 1-3 units.. they are about $4100..1500 less then the teg.-r motor.. hmm..
Kappa22 02-14-2005, 09:05 PM I think if you have long-term plans you'd be better off with a C/C1 swap... less than either a C5 or a B16B and just about as much fun (sacicons knows...)
sacicons 02-14-2005, 09:49 PM :D
Roost3r 02-15-2005, 12:32 AM the place that im lookin at has the 16b and the c1 at around the same cost
Kappa22 02-15-2005, 12:34 AM I'm still gonna say stick with the C/C1.
sacicons 02-15-2005, 12:54 AM yeah, go with the c/c1.
Roost3r 02-15-2005, 01:07 AM lol i was j.w..im gonna go with the c5 when i get the money:D
Kappa22 02-15-2005, 01:12 AM Why? [sm=dontgetit.gif]
Roost3r 02-15-2005, 01:22 AM u still think the gsr over type -r?
Kappa22 02-15-2005, 01:32 AM In the long run, you'll be able to build it up better without shelling out as much (including FI, etc.) The C5 does come with the better LSD, but IMO that's an acceptable sacrifice...
Roost3r 02-15-2005, 01:43 AM good point..every hear of anyone putting in the f20b(the accord si-r) motor into a civy?
Kappa22 02-15-2005, 01:49 AM Oh god I wish I had the money for one. I've heard of it being done, but never done it myself. I've done something harder though: F20C with a RWD conversion. We didn't do the undercarriage molding, but we installed the drivetrain and everything else. The front frame rail had to be removed and placed lower, and the front of the engine bay basically gets compacted and pushed forward. There was a funny-ass bump under the center console too for the RWD tranny... looked quite strange. Went quite fast too. But it's so much work that it's pretty much not worth the money. When you figure upwards of $5,500 or $6,000 for the motor and tranny, plus the driveline, frame and body work, suspension/brakes, etc., it just gets ridiculous... I think the guy said he ended up spending more than $14k for the whole job. But he was happy with it...
Blackhatch124 02-15-2005, 10:41 AM i have a friend who has the CTR motor with everthing imaginable done to it. and i mean EVERYTHING.....he even has this thing i dont even know what its called but he doesnt have a distributor or spark plug wires...........but anyways with all that done his best time was only 14.5 all motor
Roost3r 02-15-2005, 06:25 PM kap..do u think the f20 motor would be better then the 18c1?
Kappa22 02-15-2005, 08:27 PM No. F series are a little dicey; they're like the runt of the Civic swap list. They line up pretty similar to an H22, and are heavier than a B. I would stick with the C1 unless you can get an F20B cheap... cause that would rip!
Roost3r 02-15-2005, 09:17 PM i can get it for 2500...its got the same stats as the type-r teg motor...same compression...stil lthink gsr??
Kappa22 02-15-2005, 09:23 PM its got the same stats as the type-r teg motor
...except for the displacement. And actually, it's only 11:1 CR (an almost insignificant difference) and 10 lb/ft more torque. If you can find someone/someplace to do an install who knows their stuff, definitely go for it. $2,500 is a hell of a deal (is that for E/T/ECU?)
Roost3r 02-15-2005, 09:29 PM Its got around 30-50k on the motor

Kappa22 02-15-2005, 09:32 PM Damn, I'd snatch that up. Normally they run around $4,000. But is the engine tested, and does it have any kind of guarantee/warranty?
Roost3r 02-16-2005, 03:21 AM compression tested and 60 warrenty..

copyguy6188 03-15-2005, 04:31 PM go with b18c5, stock i run 13.9 at 107 and with 50 shot nos i run 12.8 at 123. can't do that in ctr.
sugerbear008 03-16-2005, 01:46 PM i am still a novice to the engine types the 18c1 is the type r? c5 gsr? 18c=?
kap i can get the f20 for the same price how complicated is the swap?
XCM828 03-16-2005, 08:40 PM You got those backwards. c5 is type-r and c1 is gsr.
sugerbear008 03-17-2005, 12:28 PM oh shouldn't the type r be better than gsr?
Roost3r 03-17-2005, 12:38 PM well for one..the type r motor is like another 3 grand. yes it IS faster stock, but the gsr motor holds up better on mods and is only a little slower then the r motor and alot cheeper
sacicons 03-17-2005, 11:28 PM well wait. the type r motor doesnt necessarily not hold up on mods. it just wont take to turbo as well as the slightly lower compression GSR/b18c1. for NA, the type r motor is hard to beat.
