RE: smoke when vtec kicks in?
I believe you already have what is known as "BlowBy" or loose compression. This means that your piston rings are already worn out if not broken. If prolonged, these broken rings can cause scouring of cylinder walls. This is where extreme gas pressure develops inside the engine block and oil goes inside the cylinder via the scoured walls. The higher the rpm, the greater the pressure, more oil inside the cylinder. Thus the smoke when fired up.
Looks like its time to tear apart your engine for a major overhaul or an engine swap.
