View Full Version : Polished and Ported Head
D17Punk 08-10-2007, 11:06 AM Quick question. I'm rather new to this stuff, but I just wanted to know if I am running a Nitrous system ( Nitrous Express) would it be worth it to get a ported headwith new piston heads, valve springs, and cam (shaft and gear). I know D17 are bitches to mod but I wanted to get some feedback on this before I jump into anything that might be worthless. Thanks.

D17Punk 08-10-2007, 12:30 PM Yeah it is safe to run off of stock internals I had a compression test done, butI would rather build the engine a bit without a swap, andI don't know if its worth it to put a new head on it. I know most heads are used for forced induction only so ifI dont run a turbo on it, is it worth upgrading it?
johnny 08-10-2007, 01:03 PM Honestly, I'm sure you know this those bottom ends are weak, and aren't good for too much horsepower.
How big of a shot are you running?
D17Punk 08-10-2007, 01:19 PM Just a 50 shot. What kind of bottom ends can I get to make it a little more sturdy. I have been told they are weak but I was too stupid to ask what mods I could do.
johnny 08-10-2007, 05:32 PM Alright, well Im going to tell you, and i know its something you dont wanna here. The engine is probly good for like.. say 180whp. If you really wanna get the power going, get yourself a decent platform such as a D16z6 ( 92' - 95' civics) Or a D16y8 ( 96 - 00 EX civcs) Youll have a much better experiance. trust me.
D17Punk 08-10-2007, 07:13 PM Do you think I could get a better platform for it or is that not worth it. I know that i could do swaps and different stuff like you said an older style civic but I was just looking for other options around that.I really just want to build it for like 230-250 whp and 190-210 wtq something pretty fun to drive around without a turbo but i know either route of building the motor or turbo is pricy.
johnny 08-10-2007, 07:44 PM You could honestly pick up a 1.6 litre D series engine for like 500 or even less and put a turbo kit on it, and it would be able to handle 225 horsepower with a good tune on the stock bottom end.
don't expect to see that much torque on a honda engine. Expect to see around 140-160. Atleast you can wind them out to 7k+ though. Lol.
theblackpearl 08-10-2007, 10:16 PM i don't know how weak the d17 is but if you're only running 50 shots then you should be fine as long as you don't mis shift and over rev. i've been running 50 shots on my d16y7 for a long time and i still haven't had anything happen to my engine.
and i'm pretty sure 50 shots won't give you that much power even if you do build the internals
The more mods youve got done the better, but the D17 is a poor platform. It can make decent power, but its just much more expensive. I wouldnt try to make it fast, unless you have $ out the arse,
99civicricer 08-11-2007, 12:47 AM dont build a d if your gonna spend money atleast do a b16 swap for like 2k. because i have built a d16y8 withskunk 2 cam, valve train, i/m, ecu, port and polishandi/h/e and had it tuned and i spent like 3k and was only runningmid 15s. d series tranny doesnt have enough umph to get it up and going
ej6buddy 08-11-2007, 01:08 AM well, it's kinda your own fault for not going boosted in the start, lol
99civicricer 08-11-2007, 01:35 AM i knowbuti was actually about 2 weeks away from ordering my pistons, rods, crank, and my turbo set up but i blew it up so i said screw it and took that$6000 and put my b18c5 in and now im running high 13s low 14s. so i think you should get a b16sir2 and a wet 75 shot and you will be running pretty close to 14.20s
D17Punk 08-11-2007, 05:08 AM If I'm gonna do a swapI thinkI might as well just sell this bad boy and get something better I was thinking maybe a 2000 SI to build off. Does that give you a good stock motor to build off of. Im not too framiliar with what engine comes with what car. But when I have been surfing the web it seems like those are one of the types of civics that have a good amount of mods for.
bcivic 08-17-2007, 05:34 AM The 2000 civic si has the usdm b16a2 engine in it the same engine at least american equivalent engine of the jdm b16a. So if you can find one of those for cheap or at least cheaper than the swap would cost you,go for it there are plenty of mods and you can make very decent power out of it.

doesn't stock run in the 17's, and you spent $3000 only to go faster by a little over a second? lol
Aaron_EX 02-27-2008, 08:50 AM he has a 7th gen civic, b seires, h series, and d16 are out of the question. the only swap he can do is a k series, which is expensive. i have a d17, i was looking at nitrous, tell me how it goes. You might consider a turbo if you have the money.
