View Full Version : I want a new head unit...dont want to break the bank
Hailchristian 08-21-2007, 02:25 PM alright...well my wal-mart headunit (lol...birthday present) has held up great for the 7 months ive had it but i think its time to move on to somthing that actually plays cds without skipping....It was the one that has the usb and the sd card port if anyone was wondering.....
anyways....
I'm wondering of a good head unit to buy without spending a lot of money....I've got amps going to all my speakers as well as subs, and i really want it to play MP3 cds as well as AUX in (aux in...not ipod in lol)
any ideas?

Stumasters 08-21-2007, 07:15 PM + 1 for any decently priced Alpine. Although as a personal choice I would foot the bill for one with the BBE enhancement. I have jacked around with this newer high dollar alpine forver and still can't match the sound my older cheaper one with BBE offered.
It's worth the extra penny imo.
Hailchristian 08-21-2007, 09:41 PM i was actually looking at that pioneer....
well alright...ill consider saving up for a better one...my head unit sounds like crap usually..but again...what does really good sound like...thanks for the imput
mk378 08-22-2007, 06:15 AM If you play standard CD's a lot, don't assume that spending $200+ is going to get you a player that doesn't skip. A lot of them are really terrible. Unless you can find where someone has reviewed written up this important point, I suggest you don't buy anything without a test-play of one of your damaged CDs.

lol...yeah i know that a 200 hundred dollar player will skip scratched cds.......im talking about a player that doesnt skip brand new cds....
The one i have from wal-mart will just skip regardless....i usually burn a cd put it in and then about a week later it will be skipping in random spots....
Its a really ghetto player....
But i dont expect them to play my messed up cds...i just want it to be able to play cds in general
2slo4u 08-22-2007, 06:43 AM I have this one for sale. But it dont play MP3's. It has all kinds of RCA's. I have a sub amp and 4 channel amp hooked up to it.
You could always hook a mp3 player up to it. :D

Hailchristian 08-22-2007, 06:48 AM uh...that thing looks pretty cool...how much?

mk378 08-22-2007, 09:01 AM There used to be some that play damaged CD's really well. Also the ability to play a damaged CD means it will probably handle bumps in the road better.
I haven't found one lately. When they went to MP3 capability they apparently changed to CD-ROM chipsets instead of the highly developed audio CD chipsets. In a CD-ROM the ability to play audio CD's is an afterthought.
Any CD's you use in the car are going to get damaged. Just a matter of how long you can go before having to burn new ones.
ic892003 08-22-2007, 05:42 PM wut r u guys talking about... if anyone buys a head unit over $120 that doesnt play mp3s i call it a rip off..... my old pioneer head unit costs $100 and it played all song formats, i never put a cd in it and did it not play
civicduty96 08-22-2007, 07:12 PM i think the727kid has a Eclipse cd5000 for sale for $200... if you want a cdplayer that will play anything and i mean anything ..scratched,burnt cd's. GET A ECLIPSE they are one of the best sounding cd players you can buy.
jimijam 08-22-2007, 10:17 PM On a budget, this is probably hard to beat considering the bonus features (fee ipod cable, free 1gb thumbdrive) and the good customer ratings on this deck http://www.crutchfield.com/S-dwtIeX6OLJF/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=158GT610UI.

lawlersauce 03-31-2008, 10:33 PM Sony makes some fugly ass HU, not gonna lie.
If you want a good LOOK and GREAT quality spend it on a pioneer. I have a DEH-P5900IB and it f*ckin owns. Dunno if you can find it in the stores anymore, cause the new pioneers just hit, you could prolly find the same gen for cheap on sale somewhere.
I think the 5900IB was like 250...(got it for like 120 with BB employee discount)
holePUNCH_Ryan 04-01-2008, 06:29 PM i was just at best buy tonight. they have a new kenwood i think it is...with ipod ready, mp3 and usb plug right in the front. Pretty sweet and its only $150.00

I personally reccomend any Pioneer headunit for the best bang for the buck, not the Kenwood.
I love Kenwood decks, but not the cheap ones. I have a DDX7017 double din and love it.
Best headunit(single din)'s out there are hands down Eclipse in my personal preference.
civicn00b 04-06-2008, 11:03 AM You want a good unit you are going to have to be a little patient and also a bit lucky. I work for Best Buy and I can get them a bit cheaper than original price but I always look out for stuff thats on clearance. You can find some great units for pretty cheap if you are on the lookout. I went to a different location Best Buy than the one I work at and I found a Kenwood KDC-MP435U on clearance for $59.99, it was originally $159.99 (without using my discount since using discount will discount of original price). This unit has a front USB for ipod, a back Aux port (I have my satellite radio hooked up to it), it is HD Radio ready, and Sat radio ready. Will play aac files as well as mp3 and wav. Great brand name unit for cheap.
Check all the Best Buys you know for units with "Clearance" under the price tag, sometimes they have to get rid of older items to put the new merchandise in. Don't bother checking the website because you won't find the stuff thats on clearance, the best way is to actually go to the actual store.
flatfoot224 04-14-2008, 10:56 AM Ive had a pioneer 4800mp for a little over a year now, and love it. check into it
