Actually, I'm interested in it more for the challenge. It is the one thing on a vehicle I have yet to do in life, and plan on doing. The timing is simply right. Plus, I do ahve the spare I picked up last weekend. I would install it, but it was in a grungy garage, and when I picked it up, some dirt dropped into the thing. Now I am worried this will "sand" all my gears to death.

Any ideas on how I could remove the dirt without cracking the case?

OR, could I crack the case without having to disassemble everything??? (kappa, I'm asking you)

I haven't yet put it in. I am still waiting to acrue a few more parts, and get the garage time...

I am still hoping to crack the thing to see if I can clean out that dirt. The input shaft doesn't "wiggle", which, I am told, is the thing that says that the tranny is still good.

a little bit of debree in the tranny shouldnt hurt but is dependant on the size. id crack it open as this is very simple and you shouldnt have a problem putting it back together. even though the input shaft dowsnt "wiggle" that still does not tell you if the gearset or the diff pin is in good condition. if your intent on cracking this other tranny is too learn then by all means give it a whirl. i learned to rebuild these things when i blew my first diff pin. it is a little tricky at first but after a few youll get a hang of it.

That's reassuring. From what Kappa was saying, I was worried that if I simply did that, that I would screw something up. It would be worth it to me to see what's inside, and inspect everything.

When you say diff pin, is that visible? I am not sure I know what you speak of...

Have any diagramss????

you can see the diff pin through the axle holes on the outside of the transmission.....the really get a good look at it you will have to oull the gearset out as the diff is installed to where you cannot see it without removing it.

Sorry about that. I didn't mean to make it sound like suicide to even go near the internals. You should be able to crack it and have a look around no problem; just use caution whenever removing anything (if you want to do that) and work in a clean, clean environment.

I am certainly familiar with working in clean environments... I have rebuilt a few motors (and it's very important when doing that), and I work in the semiconductor industry, where clean is CLEAN.

I think I will split this thing soon. Nah, I may not gut the thing into pieces, but I will check it out.

You guys have any suggestions or warning about specific things I should watch out for??

If you can find a tranny for around $200 you're best to go with that instead of trying to rebuild it yourself. I have replaced parts inside a tranny (not Honda) and installed a "shift kit" myself. There's a lot of stuff inside that you can mess up as mentioned above.

but that route, you will never learn to do it yourself. i learned hands on with no manual. i managed to not install the gear selector in properly and had to tear it apart again. but you learn from your mistakes. also buying a used tranny, youll never know the exact condition of it until you either install it or tear it down and inspect it.
