Hi all, as the header askes, what is overdrive and has my civic got it, i have a 93 1.6 ESI Auto D16Z6. An explination on the said subject would be handy to understand how it works.

Isnt overdrive usually 5th Gear? When cars first came into mass production they only had four gears. It was a hugh break though when they invented a car with 5 gears. The 5th gear was called an over drive gear.

yeah i believe overdrive is 5th gear in a manual and 4th gear in an automatic...everytime someone asks me what it is and I tell them they don't believe me cause they think thats too simple of an answer

overdrive is when a gear puts out more revs than it takes in. meaning that the ratio is under 1:1 so it "overdrives" the speed of the engine. and i kno wthat top gear in a 5-speed honda is an overdrive, and i think it is in an auto as well. its good for gas mileage.
