So I'm now keeping the car and swapping engines (as well as a manual transmission conversion). I decided to show my mom the progress I've made on the rust/shaved side mouldings, and she said it'll look good when it's done and I should keep it. Then she suggested I just swap the transmission to a 5-speed. I honestly almost s**t myself when she said it (seeing as how she flipped out when I first suggested an engine swap, calling it a "waste of money").

-New (to me) oem bumpers - In my garage, 3/1/08
-Shaved side mouldings - Decided against, 3/2/08
-Rust repair - Finished, 3/4/08
-New paint (gloss black)
-Paint wheels (metallic blue)
-Re-install lowering springs - Lowered, 3/17/08 - Aligned, 3/19/08
-Replace wheel stud
-New Brakes (Summit Racing cross-drilled/slotted rotors all around)
-System (I have two 12" Treo subs and a 1 Farad Fosgate capacitor sitting in my room... I'm going to be getting a Pioneer amp soon)
-B18C swap/5-speed conversion (with LSD)
-LED Dash light conversion (green)
-Cold Cathode climate control conversion (blue)
-OEM front lip - On the car, 3/4/08
-Mugen style front lip repair

Progress

The body kit
-(2/6/08) Sanded paint from front bumper, trimmed foam on passenger-side skirt.
-(2/7/08) Re-installed headlights and short-ram intake. Also, I hacked off that bottom piece between the exhaust outlets on the rear bumper. That was fun :D
-(2/20/08) Finished foam filling the front bumper. I started the fiberglass work for the front bumper.
-(2/22/08) Finished fiberglassing the rear of the front bumper. Started sanding the side skirts
-(2/23/08) Re-fiberglassed the mounting flanges on the front bumper, finished one skirt, started sanding the other. Sanded down the rear bumper, finished forming the final shape out of foam.
-(2/24/08) Finished the other skirt, fiberglassed over the scoops on the front bumper.
-(2/25/08) Started smoothing out the front bumper
-(2/26/08) Finished smoothing out the front bumper, painted the front bumper. I started fiberglassing the rear bumper
-(2/27/08) Finished fiberglassing the rear bumper, smoothed it out, painted it.
-(3/1/08) Sold the body kit, put my new (to me) skirts on... it feels good to have side skirts again [8D]

Body Work/Rust Repair
-(2/9/08) Started shaving side mouldings and rust repair.
-(2/10/08) Continued sanding fiberglass for the side mouldings. Spray-painted over the bondo/fiberglass for this week until I can finish things next weekend
-(3/4/08) Finished up rust repair, primered fiberglassed areas, rattlecanned over the primer (I'm not rocking exposed primer on my car). Also, I shaved the front license plate holes.

'94 Civic EX - selling it and buying an EK
'01 CBR600 F4i - Faster than the civic

than change your sig!!! lol

I'd love to have a sunroof in my hatch, but you know, you can get a sunroof in the Si hatchbacks. And power options too.

reaper2022
12-24-2007, 08:29 AM
sig changed;)

and I want an EK if I get another civic (I like the body style), so I wouldn't be able to get an SI hatch... I'd love an EP3 though... but they're out of my price range and probably borderline impossible to find around here anyway... but anyway, to keep this on topic, after Christmas I'll be making an appointment to get my rear wheel bearings changed (they need it really bad... you can't turn the radio up loud enough to drown them out), and after that I'll start buying parts for the build.

you could always do what id like to do/trying to do.... find a decent hatchback and swap your power options over to it ;) thats what i realy want to do but kinda hard to find a decent hatchback around for a decent price...

Update: edited in sound system mini-project. I don't want the best system around (because that s**t's expensive), but I just want something that sounds good.

And I installed the new Pioneer head unit today.
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/NewRadiouninstalled.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/iPod.jpg Pshh... who needs cd's? :D

It went from this (JVC):
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/OldRadio.jpg

To this:
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/NewRadio.jpg
(and Armor for Sleep pwns!)

Now I plan on ordering blue LED flexstrips (from oznium) for the guage cluster and green cathodes (also from oznium) for the climate control to match the head unit. I think the green/blue mix will look good since the buttons on the left of the head unit light up in an acid-green color (and the rest is blue). While I'm at it, I'll probably order some more cathodes/LEDs to put around the interior.

I think I'll probably end up taking out a small bank loan so I can buy everything for the transmission swap at once. Well, that and it'll help me establish credit ;)

*edit: apparently I can't spell "pioneer" :)... and I forgot to mention... the new head unit sounds a ton better than my old JVC unit. Unfortunately, it doesn't really match the interior of the car (which has no silver or brushed aluminum), but that can be fixed with a few miscellanious additions to the interior.

*another edit: night shot :D

you can see the green a lot better here... not to mention the pathetic stock climate control lighting

I just realized I've never posted a pic of the paint that's going on my car... it's a 1-step deep blue with metal-flake that I got (for free:D ) from a friend. The body work and paint job will be done next spring.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/newpaint2.jpg
The shade of blue is a little hard to see in this picture... it's not as dark as it looks

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/newpaint.jpg
You can see the actual shade of blue a little better on the paint lid

Okay, well after some consideration, I've decided not to do the transmission swap/turbo kit. There are three reasons for this:
1) I thought about the total costs: $1500 for the transmission swap (with a good clutch since I'd be turboing it) and $1500-$2000 for the complete turbo kit. That's $3000-$3500 all said and done.
2) I found out that it's very difficult if not impossible to swap the transmission without pulling the engine. I can only think of two good reasons to pull the engine, and if I'm pulling the engine, it's going to be one for of those reasons (internals or swap)
3) Why boost a SOHC D-series for $3k-$3500 when I can just swap to an H22 and get the same power levels (with less small parts I have to search for) for $2500-$3k?

If you've read in-depth on transmission swaps (or done one), you'll know there's about a bajillion little things you have to buy (various bolts, a new starter, etc.). If I do an H22 swap, most of those little misc. parts will come with the swap package; all I'll really have to buy is a shifter, shift boot, knob, pedal assembly, clutch fluid resevior, and the hydro lines (possibly two or three more things), but that list is quite a bit shorter than the transmission swap list.

Anyway, I've edited out the transmission swap (and the system... I listen to rock almost exclusively, so a system isn't really a priority to me), and I'm going to be starting to save up for the H22 soon (actually, I'll have $300-$400 when I get off my lazy arse and take my Christmas bonus paycheck to the bank and sell my td-04 turbo that's sitting in my room)

Also, I was sitting around the other day thinking about what I was going to do with my accessory switches. With interior and exterior lighting, I'll obviously need a place to put switches. Then it hit me... Why not just make a switch box? I decided where to put it, and I know I'll be making it out of polished aluminum (to match my new head unit). I made a rough prototype thing out of cardboard, and I think it'll work for me:
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/switchbox2.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/switchbox1.jpg

It'll hold three switches (interior lighting, exterior neons, angel eyes), and it should be fairly easy (and cheap) to make... I just have to find a place that carries sheets of 1/16" aluminum... I don't even need a big piece, about 12.5"x6.5" should do.

Also, I was thinking... recently, Mossy posted up a link for some cool looking guages (thread (http://www.hondacivicforum.com/m_524055/tm.htm)). I love those things... the digital part of it is cool, but what really caught my interest was the tinted numbers. I was thinking since I'm doing an LED light conversion (which will be brighter than stock anyway), would I be able to just use something like nightshades to tint my stock guages (like people do with their taillights)? I mean, obviously I'd have to drive with the guage lights on all the time to see the numbers, but would it work?

yeah, I plan on getting a manual guage cluster (so the guages don't say I'm in park driving down the highway at 55mph lol) when I eventually do my engine swap, so I figured I'd just try to tint one of the guages I'll have two of (like the tach).

But I'm not really worried about how well lit up the needle is.... I won't be tinting the needles, just the numbers. But I'm having second thoughts about the whole idea... it'll look cool, but I'm pretty sure it won't pass inspection lol

oh now i understand, i was a little drunk when i was reading it, and it was at 3am last night, i thought you were going to tint the front glass... which might also look kool, but i want me some of those gauges :D let me know how it goes, with some pics;) i might try it

The cardboard was basically just to see how it would look, if it would be in the way of anything, how much metal it would take, etc. I haven't gotten around to making the actual thing yet (and I still have to find a place that carries sheets of aluminum around here). It should only take an hour or so to bend the metal and stick it on there (I'll either use rivets/screws or 3m double-sided tape). Also, I need to get two more switches before I make the box.

I'll see if I can't get some pics of the car tomorrow (areas that need fixed and everything).... it's pretty dark out or I'd do it right now.

Guage cluster

(you can see all the holes that need filled in the bezel, too... )

and if anybody's wondering, the holes in the bezel are from my old bezel trim:

anybody want to buy the trim kit? :D
(seriously, if anybody's interested, PM me)

addiction2bass
01-04-2008, 03:33 PM
well you can always just swap the right side gauges on the cluster... that way you can keep the milage true..

but if ya want a replacement bezel ill sell ya mine..... a DX and EX cluster bezels are the same and i used my DX bezel when i replaced my speedo.... cause if ya sell that ring thing ya might want to just keep it on the bezel.
tho i would do the trany swap ;)
and for the cluster... well you know you could just unplug the indicator lights right ;)

reaper2022
01-04-2008, 04:02 PM
well I am doing the transmission swap... it's just now it'll be in the form of a 5-speed H22 swap:D... I figured it'd be cheaper than the trans swap/turbo project and make (a little) more power anyway.

And I was just planning on swapping out the fuel/temp guage... I was going to test the whole tinting thing on the spare speedo or tach I'd have. I might be interested in your spare bezel, it depends on what the guages come with when I order mine off ebay.

and what do you mean with the indicator lights?

*also, page 1 was updated... I separated the stuff into 3 categories (Restoration, Appearance, Swap) to make it easier to figure out... and added dates of when I hope to have the stuff done (on a few things... most just have a season or month lol)

addiction2bass
01-04-2008, 05:03 PM
you said on your cluster you dont want to see it saying PARKED all the time.... they have thier own wire plug on the rear of the cluster for them.... cannt remember what color the plug was on my 99 but im preaty sure a 92-95 should be the same way.....
only downfall is you still see the white indicator lettering between the gauges.....

reaper2022
01-04-2008, 05:19 PM
oh, okay... I understand now lol

but that gives me an idea... I wonder if I couldn't cut the boxes out and wire up some new indicator lights.... let's see here... I'd have 7 holes...

1 (P) - vtec (just because)
2 (R) - interior neons on (because I can lol)
3 (N) - underlights on (don't you hate it when you forget they're on and you drive past a co? lol)
4 (D) - halos on (I forget to turn mine off half the time)
5 (3) \
6 (2) - shift lights?
7 (1) /

anybody know how to make an LED light up at a certain rpm? It'd be nice to have a 3-stage shift light (7200 rpm (redline on an H22) = red, 6700rpm = yellow, 5700rpm = green)... addiction, any ideas on how to do it?

Peg_Leg

nice project bro can't wait to see the finished product, p.s. keep that paint clean and don't let it get cold or freeze

addiction2bass
01-04-2008, 06:13 PM
well your idea for the gauges COULD BE preaty cool....

and well i did see a realy cool shift light unit awhile back on ebay tho i forgot to save it.... it was a progressive led shift lights.... was very cool looking! like the higher your RPMs went the more leds would light up from like green to yellow then to red.
unfortunatly i cannt find the unit on ebay right now... it would like mount above the steering colum like a small arch style. looked realy cool sorry i cannt find it....
O SNAP.... found it. after all ;)
http://cgi.ebay.com/Progressive-Tacho-Shift-Light_W0QQitemZ330201455740QQihZ014QQcategoryZ1025 61QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

with some soldering skills... you can make it fit into your cluster.... but i think i might just buy a manual cluster, just think of it this way.... you can buy the manual cluster... and then swap your automatic gauge part and then put it back on ebay for sale.... ;)

but what i plan on using for my shift light is a simple, cheap led shift light...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BLACK-SHIFT-LIGHT-W-BLUE-LIGHT-FORD-MUSTANG-5-0-87-88_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ46100QQihZ016QQitemZ 260199580124QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

then simply open up the unit and extend the wires into my cluster with a led in it.....
thats one thing i love about the DX cluster is it has a green UPSHIFT arrow indicator, BUT with a EX i think they use that control modual for cruise controls since they are different, BUT thats why i used the DX bezel and the green lense that goes behind it... so now i just have to remove the cluster and put a green light light behind it and that way it will look just like a DX shift light... but mine will be selectable from the units adjustable knob so thats kinda cool so i can set it as low as 3K for good milage or higher for more fun.
just a cool UPSHIFT light as well as a stock look ;)

my94civic
01-05-2008, 03:30 AM
WOAH for the money they want to charge for the first one, i can make one of those, especially if your going to take it apart and integrate it into the cluster:D

addiction... where is the green upshift arrow in the DX cluster?

addiction2bass
01-05-2008, 06:21 AM
ya it is kinda high but that is preaty cool.... tho i only see them coming from austrailia.... still preaty cool tho...

and the 92-95 civic DXs have a upshift light in another dumbie light location uptop on the right, thats a arrow pointing up with a green lense behind it in the cluster ;)

tho i didnt take any pictures of it when i swaped my cluster parts out...
its preaty much the same setup as the VTEC LIGHT modification.... but mine will use the factory bezel and green lense..... now i just need to wire up a adjustable shift light to wire up a led in it....

01-05-2008, 07:10 AM
ok well i just went out and took some pictures of mine... tho its not lighted up yet tho.... it has spot for bulb BUT i got no clue if it has power already or not... i just know its not wired the same way as the DX cluster so i just kept the bulb out... and when i do get a add on shift light thing ill just custom wire up my own led ran to it and glued inplace....

only other honda ive seen with a upshift light is my old 84 CRX HF.... tho im not sure at what RPM the shift light came on...
id prefere my addon shift light unit to light up at 2.5K rpms but so far lowest ones ive seen only go to 3K :( but o well still a nice custom touch... IMO

yeh thats the only one i couldnt light up, but mine has not got a white line on it, unless u added it on paint or something. its a dark winters day here so i couldnt see what was there without lighting it up. my cluster is a litttle different to that one, its in km not mph for a start, and the gauge with the petrol and water temp hasnt got as many lights and doesnt say UNLEADED FUEL ONLY, and i havent got an SRS light.

but as for the LED thing you want to make, can you not tap into the rev wire into the back of the cluster and use a variable resistor to take it as low as you like?

check this out, bout half way down a guy makes his own tach, all u need to do is use one LED for the shift you want, you could even cram two leds into that space, use a switch, and have one led for casual driving, and one led for hard driving, both would be within the same space in the cluster

well i think youd have to do a [partial swap with a aftermarket shift light wired like im planning on doing...
the part that goes to the cluster is different, and im not sure HOW its wired... i thought about geting a bunch of diodes to block any back flow/power BUT i dont think i can do it... so im just going aftermarket... and puting it into my ex cluster with DX bezel and green cover on the inside. it pops right out...

I got tired of how the muffler was hanging off-center in the exhaust cutout... so I ghetto-rigged it... it cost me $0.00 and it hangs almost perfectly in the center of the cutout. I can't really get the cat-back until after the swap since the H22 header won't line up with the civic's exhaust.

The reason why I need a new sunroof switch lol... not to mention the sunroof switch doesn't work anymore

My a-pillar trim has been drilled into, sanded down, painted, etc. I'd really like some new ones lol

yeah, I had to bang on the dash a few times to get the climate controls to light up for the camera:)

Anyway, I just got off the phone with my friend (who was thinking about buying my turbo... he won't, but I might end up turboing the civic now [8D] )... his friend from work's friend is selling an older 'teg... It has a "b16" motor in it (my friend thinks it was swapped, but he says it might be a b18 (which for the members relatively new to hondas, should be in the integra anyway)). Another plus is that it's a 5-speed (as opposed to my automatic civic)... aaaaaaaannnd... it's $500 for the car... it'll have everything except the seats (my friend says the owner wants to keep them). The only thing (according to my friend) wrong with the car is that it's rusted, but who cares? I'm probably just going to strip the car and sell what's left to a scrapyard. I figure if I have the integra, I have everything (and I mean everything) for the auto to manual swap (assuming the manual pedal set bolts up and everything) as well as the engine swap.

Well, I'm just hoping I can buy the car... my friend says there's a kid offering $600 for the car and if I don't have the $500 "tonight", the guy is selling it for $600. I'm thinking I can talk the guy into waiting until tomorrow when I can have the title changed (with my luck, I'd pay $500 tonight and the guy would report the car stolen tomorrow lol).

thanks.... and I just got off the phone with the guy who's selling the car... he's towing it (the front brakes need replaced and the lines need replaced... I'm not sure if the car has been inspected... you know... lol) to my house tomorrow and I'm paying for it then. He said it was a single overhead cam, so I don't know if it's a d16 (since D and B sound pretty similar) or if he just doesn't know what he's talking about. I made sure it's a 5-speed though... so at the very least, I got a total and utterly complete transmission swap for $500. I'm still hoping it's a b16 though... you gotta love dohc's :D

okay, now I seriously f***ing hate my parents... last night around 10 (after letting me think I'm allowed buying the car for 2 hours), they decided that I'm not allowed to buy the car because "it's too much money to spend"... wtf?!?! It's $500 for an utterly complete transmission swap! I tried explaining to them that all the parts I'd need to buy for a transmission swap would be d*** close to $1500 once you include the new clutch and everything, but my mom's head is so f***ing far up her a** that she didn't hear me, and my dad won't let me get the car because he doesn't want my mom to get p***ed at him for letting me. So now, thanks to them, I get to either spend $3k-$3500 to swap to a 5-speed and boost my D or spend $3k to swap to a 5-speed H22. I understand that the 'teg had 200k miles, but still... for $500, I could buy the d*** thing, part it out, and junk what's left (probably turning d*** close to a $500 profit). My dad tried telling me that the transmission is probably junk after 200k miles and I'd need to replace the gears, clutch, and everything else... well, who's to say I won't have to do the same thing with a transmission that only has 100k miles on it? My friend's truck is still on the stock clutch after 300k miles (hell, everything is stock on that thing), and it's still going strong. My parents keep telling me I need to save up for college... well, hell, it's $500 (and I'd be garanteed to get my money's worth, too)... I spent more than that on the body kit that's now sitting (and useless to me) in my garage. Now, because I have to "save up for school", I get to pay 6-7 times more for what I want to do with the car. I don't f***ing get it.

[sm=rant.gif]

*edit: oh, did I mention what an a**hole I felt like calling the guy and telling him I can't buy the car less than 24 hours after guaranteeing him I could pay for it in cash?

*edit #2: also, I forgot to say... my friend Alex (who told me about the car in the first place) said he thought it had 200k miles.... and that the engine had been rebuilt recently.

yeah, it sucks... honestly, at this point, I'm seriously considering just selling my EG (gotta get those rear wheel bearings replaced first lol) and buying a 5-speed Integra GSR... I'll have a fast car (that some of my spare parts *cough* coilovers *cough*) will fit, and I won't really feel the need to spend $3k on mods since it'll already be fast... probably just i/h/e, throw my coilovers on it, and call it a day.

*edit: found a silver Integra GS for just under $7k at a dealer (82k miles on the car)... I'm probably going to talk to my parents about buying it (and trade in my civic while I'm at it)... If I do get it, I'll be honest... I plan on slamming the thing (on the coilovers that I already own) and painting my 17's (that I already own) blue, because silver teggies with blue wheels look awesome.

Pictures of the body work progress (I won't even be done tomorrow.. me and my friend are going to be throwing another layer of fiberglass on it and sanding it down perfectly next weekend):

Remember that switch panel I was thinking about making?

I'll get some pictures of it fiberglassed tomorrow.... it needs to be sanded and bondo'd right now.

damn! I seriously didn't know it was that flammable... and to think I had a torpedo heater running aimed right at where I was sanding down the bondo... that could've been bad lol

And yeah, I'm almost 100% sure I'm keeping the car... my mom even said now that I'm fixing the rust and everything she thinks it would be better to just put a 5 speed in the car and keep it... my jaw hit the floor when she said it... she almost flipped out when I first suggested an engine swap last summer, so her suggesting me swapping the engine was the last thing I expected lol

so h22, here I come :D

and that $4,000 I was going to get for my next car? I'm pretty sure I can talk my parents into letting me use some of that for the swap and put the rest in the bank :D

I had to rattle-can over the fiberglass for this week... I can't really finish the work this weekend (ran out of bondo, very little fiberglass resin, and I'm running out of time), so it's going to be spray-painted until next weekend when I can finish it (and primer it)... after all, a rattle-can job is better than unpainted fiberglass/bondo, isn't it?

Oh, and here's what I have for my system so far... I traded that td04 turbo I had for it:

I figured the sides would look a lot cleaner when it gets repainted once the body kit's on... that and even if it doesn't look all that different, it still gave me something to do for 10 hours lmao

and I originally was trading the turbo for just one of the subs... I talked my friend into giving me both subs for it.. then when he was pulling them out of his car, he's like "hey, do you want the capacitor? I don't need it."... so I'm like "sure!" :D

I'll probably hook it up as a "just in case" kind of thing... I figure it's not like I had to pay for it or anything

idk, the bumper looks okay, but I don't like the dual exhaust thing (having previously had dual exhausts on the civic).. and if I keep the single exhaust, I have three options... I can drive around with an empty exhaust outlet, I can shave one outlet, or I can modify the rear bumper. I've seen pictures of cars with an empty outlet, and the car just looks unfinished. A guy I know in one of the neighboring towns used to have a 5th gen civic with the same kit I have, and he had an outlet shaved completely, so I really don't want to go that route since it'll look like Im copying him (even though I had the kit first lol). And also, I think the modifications I'm doing to the kit will give it an overall cleaner look (hopefully lol).

But thanks, man... I'll definitely keep everyone updated on my progress (and hopefully I can get that h22 swap I've been dreaming of soon :D ).

*edit: and now I'm starting to have second thoughts about the h22 swap. I know I'm swapping the engine and transmission, I just can't decide what I'm swapping it to.

After thinking about it, an h22 swap is very labor-intensive and expensive ($3k shipped once you include mounts and axles), then you need all these little odds and ends to get everything to play nice (not to mention no possibility of a/c or anything). I'm now thinking I'll take the 20hp loss and get an LSD-equipped B18C for less than the cost of the h22 swap.

Will the stock b18c mounts bolt up to my civic? And will the axles work? Those are the two big things I'm worried about right now.

reaper2022
02-12-2008, 03:09 PM
So I decided on a few changes today:

-No body kit (that means a stock body)... I figure between the h22 swap (the one I'm leaning heavily towards) and the Ground Controls, I'll have enough ground clearance problems with a stock body.
-The wheels will stay black
-I'm about 95% certain I'll be doing an h22 swap (The b18 would be easier, but I know I'll be happier with the h22's power)

addiction2bass
02-12-2008, 03:23 PM
good to hear, cause i dont care for a body kit style ;)

tho i would keep the stock AC system...

im trying to get my friends 94 AC system from him cause he is removing it, he has most of it removed so i hope to get it before he desides he wants to put it back in.LOL and buy what every i have to make it work and just hope a ac shop wont charge me to much to fill the system...
cause i realy miss my AC even more in the winter now! dam windows fogging up like crazy!

reaper2022
02-12-2008, 03:36 PM
I'd love to keep the a/c, but 160 ft/lbs of torque is damn tempting... the only thing that really concerns me about the h22 swap is whether or not I can even do it (this being my first swap)... especially since it'll be a transmission conversion, too.

Anyway, here's what I figure with the a/c situation... I plan on getting those nice thin jdm window visors... that way, if it's raining, I can roll the windows down an inch or so, and I won't have to worry about the windows fogging up. I'm not even worried about how cold the air blows... in the spring/summer/fall, my windows are down until speeds hit about 65 (when the wind noise starts drowning out my stereo lol). Now in winter, I'm not even worried about it... I'm fairly sure this car will be undriveable in the winter (200hp on a fwd? I have a hard time not getting stuck with my pathetic 125hp lol), so I think I'll look for a cheap (under $1k) winter beater with ac next fall.

*edit: d***it! Now I'm starting to reconsider the b18... For the price of an h22 ($4k, more or less), I could do the b18, get an i/h/e, and still have some money left over for misc. stuff. Not to mention the b18 will more or less drop right in (as opposed to spending a few hours trying to cram the h22 in the engine bay)

Lol the guessing game begins again. so many choices

reaper2022
02-13-2008, 12:59 PM
okay, well after sleeping on it, I've decided I'm going with the b18. This being my first swap, I'd like things to be as easy as possible (not to mention I'm not sure I'm willing to give up a/c and p/s on a dd)... I do still plan on doing an h22 swap to a civic eventually... I think this fall I'll start looking for an eg hatch for a winter beater, then next summer I'll start building that (and swap in an h22), too.

Now I need to decide what b18c I'm getting... I kid on honda-tech wrecked his eg hatch, and he's now parting literally everything out (I've already talked to him about the stuff I'll need for a trans. conversion)... he has a gsr engine, b16 trans with an ls 5th gear... I'm not sure if I should talk to him about that, or just order a stock b18c from HMO

I realized today that I have a lot of parts waiting to go on the car:
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/carparts.jpg
All I need now is a car to put these on... oh, wait :D

And the annoying list... things that need to happen before all these parts can go on
-B18 swap (not lowering it before the swap)
-I need to pick up a wheel stud
-I need a twin-loop muffler
-I need an oem rear bumper (mines cut up from when I had dual exhausts)
-I need oem side skirts
-I need an amp

Oh, and in case anybody cares, I decided I'm getting the b18c from HMO since the lsd transmission will be nice to have during winter... but my parents are making me figure out things like where I'm doing the swap and who's helping me before I can order it... I'm not allowed doing the swap in my garage because my dad refuses to believe that you can swap honda engines in a weekend... He thinks the car will be sitting in the garage for at least two or three weeks (because that's how long it took him to swap engines back when he was into modifying cars)... honestly, if me and my friends start the swap on friday afternoon and aren't done by sunday evening, I'm probably going to stab myself out of embarrassment. But the swap will definitely not happen until it gets nice enough to ride my bike... I need a method of transportation for the few days I can't drive my car (especially if for some reason I don't the car driveable by monday morning), and I don't feel like driving a ford expedition lol

yeah, I know... I have two ideas right now:

1) use a friend's garage (not sure whose yet)
2) my dad rents two storage sheds outside of town to keep all his construction stuff in... I'm hoping I can talk him into letting me clear out enough room for my car and doing the swap in there

I'm hoping for option #2 right now... that way, I could work on the swap any time I felt like it (instead of being on someone else's schedule)

hell just go rent a storage space yourself large enough to fit your car and another 5foot or so area infront of the car if you can!

if you got all the mounts and such the swap isnt to bad at all...
hardest part about pulling my blown z6 out of the car was the dam axles. they stuck like a MOFO!!!!!
other than that if you got all the parts its not hard at all...
a typical engine hoist and some ratchet straps worked great for me! i used the ratchet straps to angle the motor right in.
also word of advice take off the side smaller mounts from the brackets. then the dang thing should slide right up without to much trouble at all.
if i ever pulled it out again id have my drivetrain out in no time at all! 2 hours and i could have it out of the car completly! just one of those things that after your first pull it gets ALOT easier cause you know the small things that try to hold the setup in the car.LOL

wish ya luck! but if you do ever decide to pull the AC system just remember to seal all the lines!!! i would use some silicone and some heatshrink tubing over all the lines that are not removed off the car and then with the lines and compressor that was pulled be sure to seal those tubes also! that way if you do decide to reinstal it later on you dont have to worry about debri in the lines or them rusting up as well....
or you can ship all the parts to me ;) LOL

reaper2022
02-20-2008, 12:25 PM
thanks for the advice, addiction... and I asked my dad about the storage bays (he owns a construction company and has two storage bays rented out for his equipment)... apparently, you aren't allowed doing work on cars in the bays (I'd guess because the owner doesn't want oil, grease, and "extra" nuts/bolts/screws all over the place when the renter is done). But I think I know of a place to do the swap... I'm friends with a family that owns a farm in the middle of nowhere... they have one of those u-shaped steel barn-type things where one of them (the son) lives... but he only occupies half of it, and the rest is used as sort of a garage... I'm going to talk to them to see if I could borrow that space for a weekend.

Jesse - Don't worry, I have aftermarket wheels (the ones in my avi)... but it's winter here, and in PA that means a ton of snow, so the stock wheels are still on for another month or so until the snow starts melting a little... wet/dry tires don't do so well in snow lol

and jpnolan - they're 17's, but yeah.... they're sitting in my dad's workshop waiting until spring. I'll probably have them back on the car by mid-march at the latest. Unortunately, I have to order two new tires because they got f***ed up from me lowering without an alignment last summer... I'll probably keep the worn ones around and do a burnout 'till they blow after the engine swap (and yeah, I'll have a video :D )

But anyway, here's some updates. I'm fixing the body kit and selling it (trust me, brandon... you'l love what I'm doing to it), so here's my progress on that. I finished foam-filling (for the most part) the front bumper, and started doing the fiberglass repair, along with starting to shave some two of the scoops to give it a cleaner look.
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/bodykit1-1.jpg
I finished filling the front bumper with expanding foam... it adds rigidity to the bumper, making a bit more solid than the flimsy 3/32" or so thick fiberglass the kit was originally made of. Filling the kit wasn't hard (spray the insulation, wait for it to expand and set up, lather, rinse, and repeat), but I'll tell you guys... getting it shaped right (basically flat) was a total pain in the arse. I normally wouldn't be this meticulous, but I want this to be done right (and show-worthy). I'll be fiberglassing over the back and painting it (well, primering anyway).

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/bodykit2-2.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/bodykit3-1.jpg
I got started on the fiberglass work... until I ran out of resin (I never mix enough lol)... I have another quart of it (which should be enough for the front bumper), but I didn't feel like opening it just yet... that's for tomorrow :D

Anyway, tomorrow I'm going to foam-fill the scoop I fiberglassed over and get it ready for fiberglass across the front of the scoop... also, I'll hopefully have a complete layer of fiberglass across the back of the bumper (I'm doing two layers of fiberglass and smoothing everything out with body filler before I primer it)... the way I figure it, I still need at least two more quarts of resin, two more cans of primer, and three more packs of fiberglass mat, as well as more cheap paint brushes... I'll be picking all that up tomorrow, friday, or saturday... whenever I get a chance to stop at the bank and take out more money lol

^ thanks, man... I dont' know if you read, I'm actually selling the kit... I'm just doing fiberglass work on it for the person I'm selling it to. Actually, I'm killing four birds with one stone (that's gotta be a record): I'm getting the satisfaction of actually having finished what I started (It doesn't happen to me often lol) by modifying the body kit, I'm making money (actually, I guess I'm losing something along the lines of $200 when you think about it lol), I'm gaining storage space by getting rid of the body kit, and I'm getting free stock bumpers (I need both skirts and a new back bumper... and I'll have a front bumper to play around with).

Anyway, I didn't get a chance to get on the computer yesterday, so here's what went on yesterday:
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/bodykit5.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/bodykit6.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/bodykit7.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/bodykit8.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/bodykit9.jpg

I got a good 85% of the back of the bumper fiberglassed, fixed the three cracks, and started foam-filling the scoops. I decided the back only needs one layer of fiberglass (especially since it's foam-filled), and I'm probably not bondo-ing the back of the bumper, mostly becuase I won't have time to do it (I have 7 days to finish the kit). But anyway, by tonight, the body kit should be 97% complete, meaning all I'll have to do tomorrow is primer it. Also, the side skirts will be done by tomorrow night, and primered by sunday. That'll just leave the back bumper for me to work on next week (and it's going to be a PITA to get the thing perfect).

The first layer of fiberglass is on the back bumper

Honestly, I'll bo so glad when the kit is done... I've spent almost literally all my free time since last wednesday or so on this body kit... there's probably been over 100 man-hours worth of work in the kit so far

But I'm getting stock bumpers (my car will actually have both skirts for the first time since last summer :D ) out of the deal, as well as some money that should pay for some of the smaller things for my project (manual pedals, clutch lines, master cylinder, clutch resevoir, center console w/ armrest, etc.)

I should have the body kit done tomorrow night if everything goes according to plan... however, that never seems to happen, so I'm guessing it'll be done by thursday afternoon.

Oh, and jp - my engine is pretty much stock (sri, header) since it's an auto... hopefully, I'll be swapping to a b18c (with manual lsd tranny) in the next month or two and modding the hell out of it (okay, just i/h/e at first, but I'll probably boost it within a year or two)... I need to convince my dad that HMO is perfectly safe to order from... he seems to think I'm going to get a blown engine or they'll take our credit card number and run.

well i hope your geting enough cash for the kit with all this work!!!!!!!!!

one reason why i dont do any body work or fiberglass work for friends. LOL

its bad enough when its for myself! im dreading sanding my 94 down :(
ie had the car listed for sale localy on free craigslist but ive said as soon as i paint the car ill most likely keep it!
last car i painted was my 66impala and that thing was HUGE and weeks and weeks of sanding and prep work!!!!!! ive hated body work ever since then.LOL

tho i will be doing alittle fiberglass project for my 94 center console when ever i can get some stock parts to mold off from. ive bid on a stock arm rest back section and hopefully ill win it but im not holding my breath since ive been geting outbid on every one i bid on so far!!!!
either way im definatly fabing up some custom cupholders and a arm rest for my style. BUT i still need to get pieces that i can mold from, cause i dont want to touch my stock parts if i dont have to JUST INCASE it doesnt work out.....

yeah, I'm starting to hate fiberglass work lol... between the waiting and the hours of nonstop sanding, it really sucks (and I've even been using a disk sander for the bulk of the sanding).

But I'm getting enough money to pay for materials (which is what I'm worried about), and I'm getting the guy's oem bumpers (he has a 5th gen coupe, too)... so that's saving me money (I need a new rear bumper and side skirts.... I'll probably do some mods to the extra front bumper, like maybe a custom front lip). Really, I don't mind how long this is taking me.... it's giving me something to do in my spare time lol

Anyway, the kit will be 100% done tonight... right now, I'm waiting for the (hopefully) final layer of fiberglass to dry, then I'll be bondo-ing it (which I love doing... body filler is fun to work with) and painting it. I'll have more pics up later tonight.

And I'm dreading the body prep for my car's new paint job... right now, I have two game plans...
1) get a few friends together and start sanding on friday afternoon, going basically nonstop until we get it sanded and smoothed out (hopefully by sunds), and have the car sprayed down with primer on sunday, and ready to drive by monday.

2) wait for a week where it's not supposed to rain at all and work on my car every day after work and get it primered by the weekend. (I'll be using my cbr as a dd until the body work is done)

ej1, now that you mention it, it kind of does look like the BYS bumper... the vents to the sides of the air dam are a little too wide though.

and mybrokenblinker, I really want an h22... but I also love having a slammed car, and with the way the h22 sits in the engine bay, I'd be buying new axles every other year lol (and an h2b is kind of expensive). Not to mention the whole ground clearance thing. Also, from the swap walkthroughs I've read, with an h22 (going into a car that was born an automatic anyway), you have to bend part of the frame out of the way like half an inch to even get the h22 to fit in the bay... I don't have a lift to throw the car on, so that part of the swap (lowering the engine and seeing how much/where I still have to bend the frame) would literally take all day.

Okay, yesterday the guy that was buying the kit from me showed up, and me and my friend threw the kit on his car, along with his new 18's. Honestly, seeing how the kit looked on the car, I was sad to see it go. But I got a perfectly good set of stock bumpers/sides, along with an added bonus: an oem front lip on his bumper. So I'll be transferring the lip to my bumper most likely tomorrow. Also, I decided to scrap the shaved sides idea, since with the nice new paint I'll have, I don't even want to risk them cracking or anything. Also, black oem side mouldings will break up the mass of solid blue and go well with my blue & black/carbon theme. And this means I won't be getting a carbon front lip... besides, the oem one will be way more durable than carbon fiber anyway.

Anyway, here's some pictures of the guy's car (personally, I like it):
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/brandonscivic2.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/brandonscivic.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/brandonscivic4.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/brandonscivic5.jpg

And if anybody's wondering, on the last picture, my friend hung out the window to get the shot lol

So I'll probably be ordering new tires for my 17's so I can throw them on soon, as well as buying a twin-loop muffler and some other odds 'n' ends for the project. Also, I'm going to have the wheel stud and brake rotors replaced at a shop in the next month or so. I'd do it myself, but I hate working on the brakes... the bolts never want to cooperate with me lol.

anyway, I didn't have work today (too much rain to work outside), so I figured I'd get a little work on my car done. I finished at 7:45, so it was too dark for good pics... I'll get some good pics tomorrow if it isn't too rainy.

Anyway, here's some teaser pics:

And here's a little project I'm going to start on the side: fiberglassing my shattered old mugen style front lip. I'm also thinking about making some one-off fiberglass mugen style rear valences. I'm sure most of you have seen pics of them on EKs... I love how they look, but mugen never made them for egs as far as I know, and even if they did, they'd be impossible to find and expensive as h**l.

Anyway, here's what the lip looks like now (in 7 pieces, and I'm missing once of them)

Yeah, I enjoy it a little :)

there's just something relaxing about doing body work.... I'm not sure what it is.

So anyway, here's the pics from today (I won't have side mouldings until after the new paint job):

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/exterior8.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/exterior7.jpg

Anyway, so here's my plan with the body: since I have two sets of bumpers, I figure I might as well have some fun with them. Obviously, one of my front bumpers will have the oem lip. Once the mugen lip is repaired, it'll go on the other bumper. One of my rear bumpers will have my type-r lip, and the other will have those mugen-style valences I'm going to be custom-fabbing. Everything (well, not the oem lip and side skirts) will be color-matched to the car (metallic blue), so if I want to change the look of the front/rear of my car, all I have to do is loosen 7 screws. And if anyone's wondering, yes, I plan on having two or three different valve covers so I can change the look of my engine bay in 5 minutes ;)

muhahaha.... I'm double posting[sm=idontcare.gif]

anyway, I started fiberglassing the front lip... I was originally going to just patch up the lip where it cracked and/or broke.. then I decided screw that... I'm going to make this thing borderline indestructable... I'm coating the whole thing (front and back) in two layers of fiberglass... anyway, here's the pics:

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/frontlip2.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/frontlip3.jpg

I still have a few places to patch up (I need to make a new mounting flange on the stage-right side and there's a few chunks completely missing that need fiberglassed over), but this is only the first layer.

bump any news i look every day for an update haha its going to look nice after the new paint

reaper2022
03-16-2008, 05:45 AM
thanks for the bump:D

anyway, two updates... I'll do the bad news first:

So apparently my car doesn't like me too much... I noticed a "thud" every time I hit a bump coming from the front suspension last thursday, so I popped the hood to see if anything was noticeably wrong... and of course, there was. Somehow, the nut holding my passenger-side shock in place had worked its way off, and the shock had sunk down and gotten lodged under the strut tower, smashing the top of the threaded part and generally bending the s**t out of the threaded part. In other words, my car killed a $100 shock pretty much for the hell of it.

The good news is that ruining my shock gave me an excuse to re-lower my civic (I was originally going to wait until after the engine swap to lower it)... unfortunately, if my civic is too low for a lift, I now get to get it aligned twice (since I'll have to raise it up so they can put it on a lift at the muffler shop)

Anyway, I've pretty much decided I'm doing the painting myself... I'm not really worried about the prep work (since I was doing that myself anyway), I'm more concerned with whether or not I'll have a ton of runs, but I figure if I can paint an entire sportbike with rattle-cans without a single run (not to mention it honestly looks like it was professionally painted), I can probably handle spraying a car (I'm going to be taking everything I can off to paint individually (ie, hood, bumpers, fenders)).

And addiction: I know the lip isn't literally indestructable... there's really no material (not even polyurethane) that can support a car's weight without damage. (and i believe eg coupes are in the 2200lb dry-weight range ;))

And thanks, mybrokenblinker.... I love the oem lip, and I love the mugen lip.. that's why I'm going to have one on each of my front bumpers... that way, it's 5 minutes to change the look of my car :D

I'll have pics up in a bit.

*edit:

teaser pic :D
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/lowered.jpg

And the stock wheels are on for now because two of the tires on my 17's have horrible toe wear (from running without an alignment last summer), and the new tires won't be here until tomorrow.

*another edit: oh, and I'll be rockin' a magnaflow muffler here soon... I'm trading my friend (who's taking his duals off his cavi... he's finally de-ricing it) one of my cheap katanas for one of his mufflers. I think it'll attract less attention than my dnx. Not to mention it'll give the car a more low-profile look.

Anyway, more pics:
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/lowered2.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/lowered3.jpg

I'm perfectly aware I'm missing a wheel stud... I'm getting it replaced at a shop (I don't feel like f**king around with the stud) when I have my drilled/slotted rotors put on (I also don't feel like f**king around with the brakes). It'll be within the next month.

More pics in a few minutes.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/lowered7.jpg

And all the pics are from the left side of the car because the passenger side front wheel is missing, along with the strut. The shock should be here by the time I get home from work tomorrow, so I'll be able to put everything back together then.

When I was working in a shop I always wanted to try and put on a kit, then one day we got to, and I never want todo that again, and this kit was from extreme dimensions. So much cutting and fitting. We did another kit after that and the front fit like a glove, the back and sides were a mess. But sick jobs with the body work, I know how much work/time that takes.

reaper2022
03-17-2008, 01:16 PM
^ yeah, fiberglass kits pretty much suck as far as fitment goes... but still, I kinda had fun doing the body work

anyways, I came home from work today to a small box and two tires sitting on my porch, so I got the front right suspension back on in a hurry... so the car is sitting with an even drop on all four corners (this summer I'm feeling a 2" drop instead of the slammed stance I had last year)... Anyway, I got my tires mounted and threw my 17's back on to tweak the ride height since I'll be getting the car aligned tomorrow (meaning I can't play with the ride height after that)... so here's pics.. and it's just as low as it was last summer... Nice job! Seems like your front wheels would rub on tight corners though? Maybe that's just the camera angle.

reaper2022
03-18-2008, 02:56 PM
They do when I hit a bump around a slow turn (I got used to the sound of tires rubbing last summer)... above 20mph or so, they don't rub at all. There's about a 1/4" gap between the tire and fender when the wheels are turned the whole way.

Hey, you gotta make some sacrifices if you wanna look good. Pimpin ain't easy lol

On a side note, if you want a lot of attention, don't get a flashy paint job or a body kit or chrome... slam your ish to the ground. At a traffic light last summer, a lady in a neon stared (quite literally) the entire duration of the red light at my back wheels, which at the time were tucked halfway to the tire. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. (Not to mention you get a lot of female attention with a car sitting on the ground)

And UPDATE!!! I just ordered the 5-speed pedal assemblies from ebay... so I finally took my first steps towards the engine swap/trans. conversion!!! [sm=groupwave.gif]

reaper2022

Little update here.... I talked to my dad, and he said we might be able to order my swap next week, so I'm going to push for monday or tuesday... I'd like to get the engine here so I can see what I need still (as far as the trans. swap goes)... and the manual pedals will be here tuesday[sm=happy046.gif]

*edit:

and someone should really have told me a swap would cost so much lol... I just added it up... I have almost $1000 is misc. things alone (replacement items, s**t to make the swap work, etc)

But anyway, does this look right?
-Swap package (obviously)
-New clutch kit
-New Timing Belt
-Timing Belt tensioner
-Water Pump
-Ignition Rotor
-Plug wires
-Spark Plugs
-GSR radiator hoses
-Rear T-bracket mount
-GSR throttle cable (I need a manual throttle cable anyway)
-B-series AC condenser mount (Do I actually need this to keep my AC?)
-Master Cylinder
-Clutch hard lines

I already have manual pedals and a stock shifter in the mail for the manual conversion.

^ I'm pretty sure my bike gets more hp to the ground than my car does roflmao

anyway, I've honestly thought about keeping my z6 and boosting the f**k out of it (we're talking maxing out the stock internals)... but I have that wonderful comatose slushbox... and to swap it out, I need to pull the whole engine. I just figure if I'm pulling the engine, I might as well put a better engine back in the bay. And I plan on boosting the b18 when I graduate college ;)

Also, I have a friend (who lives in the same town as me [read: no shipping]) who's already expressed interest in taking my z6 off my hands after I swap it out... so there's a little money coming back to me. :D

Anyways, a little change of plans (this, like many other ideas, came to me while I was bored at work lol)... instead of painting the car that nice metallic blue (I think it's on page 2 or so), I'm going to re-paint it black... and then I'm going to paint my 17's dark blue. The valve cover will be matching blue, and when I eventually turbo the gsr motor, the charge piping will be matching blue also (along with the sides of the intercooler). I'll get a pic of the shade of blue I'm thinking of when my camera is done charging (give me an hour or so).
There's basically three reasons I don't want the metallic blue:

1 - I'd be worried about keeping the paint looking good; keeping it nice would be more of a chore, and the car would lose it's fun factor

2 - I don't want to have to tear the car apart to paint it, and metallic blue on the outside and gloss black in the door jambs, engine bay, and trunk would look kind of stupid.

3 - The blue paint I have is kind of old (I'm not sure exactly how old it is), and I'm not sure the paint's still good.

Also (since I think I've forgotten to mention this), my friend Andrew said he'd paint my car for free... he painted his civic a while back and did a damn good job (I've seen the car up close), so I trust his work.

*edit:
Here's the shade of blue I'm painting my wheels:

Well, I basically have them talked into paying for my engine swap (yeah, I know... I'm kind of pressuring him to order it soon becuase I want the swap to be done and the car to be repainted in time for my girlfriend's prom (like 2 months from now).

Also, just a little addition: I think I'm going to swap an EK center console w/armrest into my civic (yeah, this is related to the thread I just posted in).. I like how it looks, and it wont' be too expensive (hopefully everything (like the parking brake) will line up, since I plan on swapping the whole console instead of just the front part)

lol, trust me... ive been kissing my dads ass lately (my moms one of those "go ask your father" type of moms), so hopefully we'll get it ordered at the beginning of next week. It kind of p**ses me off when my dad pulls these kinds of stunts, but then I remember I'm getting an engine swap (assuming we ever order it) and I don't have to sell my cbr (which is, by far, much faster and more fun than my civic will ever be). That makes me kind of happy lol:D

okay, I might have a new idea... screw all this work on the civic. I found an '89 240sx over in Harrisburg (a few hours away) for $800. I'm thinking maybe buy it and swap in a black-top sr20 (and the total cost will still be less than a gsr swap in my civic!). Then, I can generally beat the absolute **** out of the 240sx... I'm just hoping I can talk my parents into this one. I'm just not 100% sure what to do with my civic.

I'm thinking a boosted 240 will be a little more fun that a wrong-wheel drive civic (even with a gsr swap)

*edit: I've got a plan for the civic... buy the 240, order an engine... keep the civic (with title) until after the swap, and sell the civic, using the 240 as a DD. :D

well ive wanted a rwd car for a while now (ever since I first saw drifting on tv[before tokyo drift, btw]), and come on... $800 for a rwd 240sx? That's pretty tempting... I mean a black-top s13 sr20 swap is $3k shipped to my house... if I sold my civic as a stock civic and got $2k for it (I'd be willing to part with the civic for that much if it meant having a 240), that's $1800 for the swapped 240. Throw in $800 for a body kit (including shipping) and $600 for paint (my friend paints cars and will do it for free), that's still a great deal. In all reality, I doubt my parents will go for it.. but I think I'll try for the "it's less money in the long run" approach... and offer to give them the $2k from my civic's sale.:D

But I have a feeling that in two months, I'll have a gsr swapped civic.

man I know how it feels to be in the shoes of having parents say no to that kind of stuff. My dad was against me doing anything like that to my civic. Well I slowly started ordering parts (nice thing about getting home before he did) by the time he would get home the part would be on my car and I would not say anything to him. And well as time went on they both realized it was beyond there control that I was going to modify my car if I wanted to.

well, jp.. looks like you won't be disappointed... apparently 2 hours is too far to frive for a "junker"... even though we're talking a rwd turbo'd junker.

anyway, I've been thinking about it and there's a good chance that I'll end up just swapping to a 5-speed and boosting my d16... from the looks of it, my dad's never going to f**king order that b18. So now I get to do a boost build out of my own pocket.

anyway, if anybody remembers that t4-04 Volvo turbo I had a while back, I'm buyin it back from my friend for $50... he gave up on finding flanges for it and ordered a different turbo from ebay. I'll probably end up ordering a FMIC in the next month too... hopefully with my next paycheck (in two weeks)

reaper2022

Quick question about my turbo build... I'm looking for about 200hp at the wheels... what size injectors should I get? Would 440's do? Or should I go for 550's or 720's?

*edit: and my dad is seriously pissing me off now... I found a '93 hatch in pittsburgh that a guy is selling for parts (car doesn't run) for $150. I was thinking buy it for $150, use it as a donor car for my transmission swap (meaning a full swap for $150+the cost of a new clutch kit), part it out and sell what's left to a scrapyard. Of course, my dad won't go along with it... so I start getting pissed at him and say about how it's bad enough he's refusing to let me get a full swap, now he won't let me get what I need to swap my transmission out of my own pocket... and what does he say? "I'm not refusing to buy that engine"... bull****! So why isn't the thing ordered yet? I got the go-ahead to buy an engine swap well over a month ago, and here I am, slowly piecing what I'll need for the trans. conversion with my own money![sm=headbang.gif]

addiction2bass
03-28-2008, 10:58 AM
150bucks for a hatch ..... hell ya you better go borrow all the money you can and go get that dam thing quick! you can easily get that money back for the whole trip by parting out whats good that you dont want!!!!!!!!

hell i wish i could find a hatch within driving range that cheap!

reaper2022
03-28-2008, 11:15 AM
^ I have the money, the problem is the car doesn't run, so I'd have to trailer it... and my dad refuses to use his truck to drive a 3-4 hour round trip to pick up a car for me. And I know I could get a ton of money parting the car out... from what the guy has posted on the craigslist ad, it's the whole car... meaning quite a few parts to sell.

Anyway, I'm honestly not sure whether I'm swapping to the b18c or just doing a trans. swap/turbo build. I think I'm going to give my dad until next weekend to order the b18, and if he won't order the swap by then, I'll go ahead and start buying things for the trans. swap/turbo build.

And a little update here:
the manual pedals are in :D
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/pedals.jpg

Quick question though,
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/rakusi/clutchplugs.jpg
on the clutch pedal assembly, what's the white plug for/where does it go to and the same with the yellow plug... anybody know offhand?

addiction2bass
03-28-2008, 11:21 AM
the yellow is the starter kill sensor,
and the white one is for the cruise control so it will kill the CC if ya touch the pedal.

then look into a friends truck, and renting a cheap Uhaul either car dolly if the rear wheels are good or a full car trailer..... and go get that sucker!

tell your dad youll never find a deal like that! hell the seats alone can go for 100bucks!

reaper2022
03-28-2008, 11:30 AM
Thanks for the info on the plugs... I take it I'll need to track down an interior wire harness for everything?

Anyway, I'll keep talking to my dad about the car... I know I can get more than $150 just in parts, and I already have my grandparents' permission to sit a car on their land (they live in the middle of the woods and I talked to them a while back about storing a car at their house when I was looking at getting that '95 integra for parts)... I'll see if I can't talk him into it. Hell, the guy selling it might even be able to trailer/tow it to my house.

addiction2bass

I'll try.. hell, I can probably sell the rolling chassis for $500 or so. I can garuntee someone around here would love to start building an EG hatch.

here's the ad (copied/pasted from CL):

Two-door hatchback; 5-speed; Doesn't run, battery is dead. Car has been sitting for three years. Many good mechanical and body parts. Must take whole car. After parting out, you can get back the sale price for the scrap metal alone. Must take car before March 31. This is a re-post. Please respond again if you replied to previous post and got no reply. I accidently deleted my inbox. If possible, please leave phone number. Thanks

reaper2022
03-28-2008, 12:44 PM
And there's no way I'm getting the hatch... my dad refuses to believe I can turn a profit on the thing, and he's unwilling to believe any of the parts are useable. When I told him about parting it out and getting more than I paid for it, he said "well then why isn't he doing that?"... It's amazing my dad can see where he's walking with his head jammed up his ass like that.

I flat-out told him if we dont' order the swap by the end of next week that I'm buying the transmission and **** for my engine myself. So if he doesn't order the engine, f**k him.

ya your dads just being hardheaded...

tell him to research parts, and he can easily see in some time you can get your money back outta the car and the parts you want as well.... might take alittle time but most of the car ya should be able to sell alot of parts from it..... depending on what all is there and condition.

youd be suprised how many people sell cars for dirt cheap just because they are tired of the car, or have enough cash or desire to buy a new car.....

hell i got my 94coupe for 400bucks with just a blown motor. i recouped 100bucks quick from the good vtec head, seats i should be able to get 75-100bucks for the newer seats.

hell theres parts all over the car people want... door panels, windows, doors, fenders.... BLABLABLA
one junk car is anothers perfect part find on ebay ;)

hell if it has a cat on the car people are paying about 100bucks just for them!
keep at him and if ya have to just go get the car yourself or with a friend.... hell drive to where the car is at check it out and find a local storage place you can park the car in till ya get enough cash to tow it home ;)

or just pay the guy if he can deliver it to ya.

either way wish ya luck.... tho your dad seems pretty hardheaded, or maybe he is not as rich as ya think ;) i know my parents are about this same way... it seems like they got alot, but ALOT is all tied up and unavailable cash....
ive thought of a motor swap or turbo but i like my 30+ mpg simple civics ;)
i may turbo eventualy maybe as a summer project after i paint mine... but i know very little from a turbo let alone a GOOD tuning shop to tune it properly for a reliable setup.

reaper2022

addiction, trust me, the swap isn't a money issue... my dad just likes to find reasons for me not to buy things (this weeks' reason for no swap: I haven't kept my s**t cleaned up around the house). And it's definitely a no-go on the hatch... but I figure I can find one (probably not for $150) when I go to school this fall, and I wont' have my parents to tell me I can't do it.

And I'm really confused about what I should do to the car... half of me wants to get the b18c, and half of me wants to keep my d16 and throw enough boost at it to blow off the tires in three gears. Then there's another mathmatically-incorrect half of me that now wants to get a b16 and boost it.

jpnolan
03-28-2008, 04:30 PM
b16 and 18s are no go i was gonna do that too but unless someone else is paying for it psh build and boost the d16 we will be in it together haha no homo

reaper2022
03-29-2008, 06:28 AM
jp, don't worry... from the looks of it, I'm going to be boosting the d16... my dad's been acting like a jackass lately. I can't stand how ignorant he is when it comes to hondas... he refuses to believe I can get a good d-series transmission for under $200... there's three or four of them on the local (sort of) craigslist for around $150 each, and some of the sellers are willing to deliver.

So from the looks of it, I'll be boosting the d16... which sucks, because now I not only have to track down all these little individual parts (actually, the starter and flywheel bolts are the only things I can really think of lol), but I now get to pay for everything (meaning another $700 for the trans. swap and then probably $2k for the turbo build)

reaper2022

I found a '91 240sx coupe in Pittsburgh I might go for... the guy's asking $2900 for it, I'm thinking of shooting him an offer of like $2k... a stock '91 240 coupe blue-books at like $1800. I need to talk to my parents and maybe take out a bank loan first though.

here it is (http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/car/621148525.html)

If I get it, it's getting a kit, paint, and wheels, and I'll probably start saving up for a turbo (it has a 2.4l swap)

*edit: I found a '91 240 hatch rolling chassis for $200... I'm thinking maybe buy it and swap in an sr20DET (another $3k)

1slowcivic

Thats spendy for the 240, I was going to pick up a 98 SE-R: http://www.warehousemotors.com/store/item.asp?id=1130
I had them talked down to 3K out the door with T/T/F

If your serious about getting a fast car Reaper I would go with an Eclipse/Talon, then you don't have to swap out engines! Comes from the factory with a turbo, and its the best bang for the buck to make stupid power. Comes in AWD and FWD models :D I made 400hp at the wheels for under 5k and it was a DD. Even the 1G models 90-94 are good, better bottom end, BOV, but weaker headthan the 2G 95-99.

reaper2022
03-30-2008, 01:12 PM
I want a 240 because they're rwd... other than that, I'd keep my civic. And I thought about a 2g eclipse (gotta have the awd at least). But there's just something about 240sx's that I like... I'm not sure what it is. But in all reality, there's a good chance I'll be keeping my civic... but someday I'll own a 240sx lol

The RWD would be nice, why not an older RX-7 or Supra? The older 240, and Sylvia's are pretty sick and that SR20D engine is nuts. I am very biased though I have spent the past 10 years in DSM community and there just isn't a car (IMO) that can put the power down for such a cheap price as the 1G and 2G. I miss my 2G, and if the wife hadn't blown the engine then I would still be heavy into it.....

reaper2022
03-30-2008, 01:40 PM
Not a huge fan of how the older rx-7's and supras look... now if I could find a mkIV supra that I could afford, I'd take it in a heartbeat lol... actually, the mkIII supras don't look too bad either

Anyway, like I said... there's probably about a 90% chance I'll be stuck with a wrong-wheel drive civic for a few years (not that there's anything wrong with civics... I love them. It's just that it would be fun to have a car where the ass-end kicks out under too much throttle lol)

1slowcivic

Something about doing 4 wheel spins in AWD, or launching at the light and all 4 tires break loose that gives me a chub......

But I figure you gotta make some sacrifices if you want a slammed car. Not to mention it takes turns like nothing I've ever seen :D

*edit: might have an offer for $3500 for the civic (with the aftermarket parts)... so I might just end up buying that '91 240sx coupe :D

okay, the kid's supposed to come tomorrow to check out the car... my friend (the one who found the kid) says the kid's willing to pay $3500 for it as is (lowered w/wheels and everything).

Anyway, I'm looking at two cars right now... one of them's an sr20det-swapped 240sx hatch (http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/car/618524530.html) (1990), and the other's a non-turbo mr2 (http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/car/628137084.html) (1991)... Honestly, I'm not sure which I like more... older mr2's just look sexy with the right body kit and everything, but on the other hand, I'm not sure the t-top would be great during the winter (then again, I have a sunroof in my civic, which is basically the same as far as heat loss and everything goes). Either way, I'm getting a rwd car (yeah... I want to be able to drift lol)... and winter's going to be a bitch (I can't really afford a fwd winter beater) lol

Stay away from the NA MR2, one they are a HOLY HELL to work on. Just thinking about it makes my sternum hurt again, from leaning over back off the car, the way the roof comes down around the back of the car right by the engine. You have to lean over it, and man does it suck. Second part is that its NA, NON-TURBO!!!!
The 240sx would be a way better project. Working down at Pina Motorsports and seeing the turbo MR-2's down there, they are worse than any DSM ever thought of being for reliablity. Sweet looking car, just hell to work on. Good Luck bro!

bump for an update on what's going on for those who care (I really don't feel like starting a new thread just for this):

Well, the kid that's supposed to be buying my civic is apparently talking to his parents about it; I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Also, that sr20-swapped 240 was sold out from under me (the guy never even let me know he sold it... I figured it out when he hadn't emailed me in over a week and I checked his CL posting... he took it down). The good news is I found a '91 240 for sale for $1800 (link (http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/car/650017208.html))... unfortunately, it needs some work. But I figure if I get $3500 for my civic, plus a $500-something tax return, and a $600 stimulus check, I have plenty of money left to work with. Anyway, I'm hopefully going to check out the 240 this week, it's something like an hour away.
