Default Tranny sticking in gear

Auto tranny, 93 civic ex. when car has been sitting for say 4-5 hours or more, when I go to drive it, I hear a whinning noise in first, but first shifts normally. Then it gets stuck in second gear, and the whinning gets very loud and high-pitched. After a few minutes of driving, it will shift out of second if I step on the gas doing around 20mph. Before it shifts outta second I hear a grinding sound... then it's fine, shifts normal, all gears, smooth, until it sits too long again. I'm trying to get everything to swap to manual, but does anyone know what's wrong with my currect tranny? Just so I can have an idea if it's gonna fall out tomorrow. It's my only car. And it's been doing this for a few weeks now... stays in 2nd longer and longer each time. Never more than a few minutes though. Thanks everyone!
