Hello, I have a '90 civic hatch that came with a 4speed manual tranny. I plan on swapping to a 5 speed. Is this swap as easy as unbolting the shift rod, and tranny, or I am going to run into complications with the shifter ?. I am not understanding how the stock shifter is going to go from not having 5th gear to suddenly having it. Please help.

its as easy as it sounds...

as long as you stay away from the 88 transmission your fine. the 88 has a differnt internal spline count and you will have to get a new clutch set up. But if you go with a 89, 90, or 91 you will be fine. The shift linkage lines up just fine and works just fine..

ill try to explain it.....so the shift linkage has two different ways it moves the transmission. It has a push/pull and it has a spin. The 1st, 3rd and 5th are all pull and 2nd, 4th and reverse are all push. So you when you put the car in first gear it pulls a lever on the transmission towards it.

THe other axes it has is left and right. 3rd and 4th have that same transmission lever perfectly strait. When you slide the shifter left and right it spins that lever and thats what makes it choose between the pulls/and pushes...

all the 5th gear adds is it adds a pull to the same side the reverse is on...

if you have some one arround have them switch through gears (with the car off) and then watch how the shift linkage looks under the car. im sure you will completely understand it.

good luck with the swap...

Thanks for your help. I didn't think it would be that easy.
