I recently bought and installed this radio in to my 97' civic, but I'm having some issues. It gets HORRIBLE reception. The sound gets really low, and then will get loud, then low again, and just in general gets bad reception in areas where the stock honda radio got fine reception ( before it broke). Any ideas what could be up? I was under the impression that this radio was supposted to get good reception? Do I need a different antena or something?
Any help is appreciated :)

I've got the same problem with my pioneer radio. Mine is a 1900 or 2000 I can't remember. It doesn't pick up certain local stations anymore. All my stuff is wired right.

Does your pioneer have a super tuner 3? civic antennas suck

does your 97 civic have an external antenna, or is it just in the window? if it's just in the window, it might have an antenna booster that needs power from your power antenna wire on the back of your headunit (blue). You need to connect the blue wire from your headunit to the blue power antenna wire on your harness. This is how it's done in the 01-05 civics, can't remember in the 97s

Yes my pioneer does have supertuner 3, but doesn't that only pick the best recepting stations?
My car has an external antena, just above the drivers side door.

Yes, it solely has a lack of power or an insufficient ground.
This does not necessarily have to do with just wires though, a damaged or unextended antenna will give the same issue.
The bad reception is 100% lack of power, but lack of power can be caused by a bad ground. Unfortunately, this is not something you can simply pinpoint the issue. Recheck all your wiring, make sure everything is attached correctly, no electrical tape connections, proper pressure grounds, proper power wire thickness, etc, just double check everything.
You could also try touching your antenna while driving to see if the reception gets better (no joke).
Tints can also screw up signal when they are installed. Also, you know how on the rear window there's the copper lines to defrost ice etc? In school, I've learned to place antennas inbetween those, because over those could lose you up to 1 volt. Therefore, you must also check to see if your wires are crossing through any other power source.
on the radio harness, hook up blue off the radio to blue on the aftermarket honda harness adapter, i have a feeling this might be the biggest issue, that it's not getting power. So take the remote wire and hook it up to the antenna power
If you can't figure this last part out, take it to a shop and let them know that your antenna isn't getting enough power, they will know what to do from there
Try an antenna booster if all else fails
