To start off, for those of you that don't know, tint % is a measure of how much light gets through. Saying your tint is say 35% means that 35% of the light that hits the window gets through; ie. the lower the number, the less light gets through, the darker the windows are.
Okay, I have 5% tint all around. Legal limit is 35% I got a ticket yesterday and I don't know what I want to do about it yet. The cop said if I fix it before the 14th then I will not have to pay the ticket. My dad works with someone who is friends with a lot of state troopers and they said that I got just about the only cop who actually writes tickets for tint and I know this particular cop stays to the one highway that I was on so so my ideas were to either pay the ticket and stay off that road so I can keep the tint 5% or peel the tint off then go find the cop and show him so he doesn't make me pay the ticket. The ticket will cost about as much as getting my windows retinted to legal limit so I don't know which way I want to go. I just hate 35% because the only reason I have 5% is because I like my privacy and I think dark tint looks good on cars, light tint not so much. 35% is okay but really just not dark enough for me to be happy with.
Sorry for the lengthy thread but what do you guys think I should do?

It just depends.....
the question is, are you willing to pay a second ticket if you get one? If you want it bad enough to chance a second ticket keep it....
if you dont want to worry about it, and stay legal, get %35.I personally like %5 as well, so i know how you feel.
i know people who were in the same situation as you, and they kept getting tickets, so eventually they removed the %5..

just stay the legal 35% limit. These are silly tickets to get for no reason. And plus what privacy do you need in a car that you need it at 5%:eek::eek:

Well I think I might just pay it and move on, dodging that one road that that cop always sits on. It isn't hard to dodge the guy when he tells me where he sits and at what time (he told be because I asked him if I could peel it off and come show him I did it so he gets rid of the ticket) If anyone doesn't know, the way the tint meter works is, it is basically a little box with a screen on it and a slit up the middle to fit the window in between it. That means that it has to go around the window, meaning it only works on windows that roll down so he can fit it over top of the window. So I am thinking about re tinting just the two windows that roll down to 35% so if he tests them it shows them as legal and he can't test the tint on the other windows there for no way to prove they are too dark. But for now, keeping them as they are and paying the ticket, and ducking that cop.
Only thing wrong with paying it now; I kept calling the number on the ticket to see how much it would cost and it was busy for like 20 mins now I think they are closed because it just keeps ringing now. My mom said she called earlier and they wouldn't give her a strait answer as to how much it will cost... which is stupid how the hell am I supposed to know how much money to bring to the court house to pay it?
I also think I posted this in the wrong section...

If I was in your position, I'd remove it, show him, and re-tint 25%
I totally understand a police officer's motivations to get people to have tint that you can still sorta see through. Their lives are "on the line" every time they pull someone over, so if they can't see what's going on, expect guns to be drawn. 25% is dark enough that they normally won't bother you about since they can still sorta see through.

i think the 35 in the front 5 in the back sounds like a plan..or get a radar detector and roll down your front windows when it goes off..that way they can see you and you they would care less.

i got tickets for 35% lol. here in NY the legal limit is 70%[:@]. i changed it to 50% so ghey lol.
about the cost of the ticket. it might be diff for u. but mine was 30 each window. plus 30 dollar surcharge. so it came to 120 total.

Yea they wouldn't give my mother a dollar ammount, they just said it could range from $5 up to over $200 plus $165 ****ing dollars for court costs, even though I'm not taking it to court. So I guess I have to walk into the court house with a wad of cash in my wallet becaue I don't have a credit card/debit/check.

Icompletely understand their viewpoint on it, that is why I am not bitching about it even though I don't really like the law. Honestly, I think any tint level should be legal and if he officer fears for his safety all he has to do is order me through the loudspeaker to put my hands out the window, open the door from the outside, and step out of the car with my hands where he can see them. That way he stays safe and I get to tint my windows dark, no one looses. But hey, who gives a **** what I think, right?
Hailchristian, I do have a radar detector... a good one, but he wasn't using his radar at that time, just sitting across from a gas station jerkin off. I was going 10 mph under the limit so I guess he was just out of donutsor bored or something.
Eh, I'm going to call the court house again tomorrow during lunch at school tomorrow and see if I can get them to tell me a real amount.
I would also like to add that last friday, me and my friend were STOPPED at a RED LIGHT (honestly doing nothing wrong, not revving or anything.) and a cop parked his car in front of me with his lights on and told me that I "looked like I was going to street race" so he was pissed and cussing then told me to go home. I didn't get a ticket that time because there really wasn't anything at all he could have given me one for... unless he had a tint meter with him, which he didn't... lol

Even if you avoid the 1 cop that gave you a ticket this time, can you avoid every cop in the metropolitan area? Probably not. Just stay legal.

Well no I can't dodge them all, but most of the time they don't have the tint meter with them. It is definatly taking a chance but I will just wait to see how much my ticket is going to be, if it is a lot and I don't want to risk getting another one I will get the sides retinted 35% asap, if it doesn't cost a lot I will put it off for a while. I've had this tint for over a year and this is the first time I have been ticketed for it. I like the odds.

Just remove the 5% and show the officer. Get 35% in the front. I don'tunderstand why tint is needed on the front windows, itsmore dangerouswhen driving after dark. Less visibility = more chance of totalling something. I wouldn't even put 5% in the back of my truck. I'd rather be able to see out of my windows plznthx.

srsly, you're going to pay a fine, resort to never driving on a certain stretch of highway, AND risk getting another ticket in the future just so you can keep your over the top 5% tint?
