View Full Version : Suggestions for a cheap, double din touch screen dvd player?..
T3rry 04-14-2008, 10:55 AM any reaosnably priced ones that people have personal experience with? i wanna get one, but i really dont wanna pay $1000 for a name brand. It's just gotta be a basic deck, and i'd perfer to get some personal experience opinions to make sure the menus aren't ugly and difficult.
Nav would be a nice touch too.
addiction2bass 04-14-2008, 12:42 PM well for a GOOD double din.... plan to pay at least 500bucks for a used one or 700+ on a new one depending on what you want to get...
i think i paid like 700bucks for my alpine IVA-W200 brand new last year.... they got another newer models so just search for alpine double din....
i love this radio! had to do alittle trimming on the plastic bezel and mounting holes alittle to fit better in my 99s dash BUT great radio/dvd/6.5inch touch screen radio. i bought a screen protector first to keep the screen scratch free. a sirius satalite tuner for it, and a video bypass for it.
so IMO pay the extra money.... the quality of the screen is the main thing you want! like in any monitor! the cheaper radios ive heard have HORIBLE screen viewing angles.... which means if you are to far to the left or right or even up or down angle from the screen the screen would look black.... a good screen/monitor should be viewable with a great picture at any angle!
Vilex 04-14-2008, 12:44 PM Check mine out, its a Dual in-dash. It only cost me $450, and came with more than enough options. DVD, I can hook up a camera to it, ps2/wii/ect, and all that good stuff. Its really nifty and fun, I like it alot. Check my gallery to see it .;)
addiction2bass 04-14-2008, 12:51 PM yours is a single din pop out. not double din.
T3rry 04-14-2008, 01:01 PM yeah, i'm really looking for a double din so it looks really clean, anybody have experience with any of the ebay brands? i saw a Nitro, and Pyle one on there, for ~350 shipped... anyone with personal experiences with any of them that can comment?

check this out its from one of my suppliers
imshirazy 04-14-2008, 03:56 PM From my experience, if you try to save money on anything audio related you'll pay later
you shouldn't buy a cheap one, then expect it to last very long
not to mention with the new laws today, touch screens and dvd players have a very limited tampering ability while driving, you have to stop the car before you can really do much except maybe change a song or the volume
also for a civic, the issue now is that you have to connect it to your handbrake and pull it up 5 times before you can even get it to work
there's a trick around this by grounding to your antenna and a few other things but, they suck and also don't do well in the long run...
A touch screen is a bit much especially for a civic anyway, why do you want a touch screen?
addiction2bass 04-14-2008, 04:25 PM cause its cool ;) i love mine... and all it takes is a video bypass... just a few wires and youll be able to watch dvds all the time ;)

yours is a single din pop out. not double din.
I'd definitly go for the double din if you are looking for something with a screen rather than the pop out/up.
I agree with you, cleaner look.
Remember, you get what you pay for.
Personally, i'd rather install a double din once and pay $900 rather than pay $500 and have to install, uninstall, then reinstall because of problems, warranty returns, etc.
Do it right the first time.
Just my opinion though.
addiction2bass 04-14-2008, 06:45 PM ya main thing ive heard ALOT abotu the single din flip out screens are the motors get striped VERY EASY! so they either stick retracted or half way out or stuck fliped out....
main reason i picked the double din.... plus i could fit it ;)
and also no remote brain to locate else where.....
T3rry 04-15-2008, 11:40 AM Okay, so if i go with a good brand, are there any that are easily bypassed? also are there any that will allow a dvd to play on the video/audio out without it displaying on the dash? reason being i have a line on a roof mount screen that i might install for my kid in the back seat, and while i don't wnat the dvd to play up front, i still want it to play for the back seat kid while driving.
I bought a jensen dvd player for my other car just recently, single din, only 3" screen, but i have it pushing out to a 7" criling mount screen for the back seat, it was just a single wire to ground to bypass the "only on while parked" feature... although it does run on the dash while running the video out, but this isn't a big deal because its only a 3" screen, i couldn't see it if i wanted to.
addiction2bass 04-15-2008, 12:08 PM ya my video bypass was very simple to instal! just a few wires conected to the radios harness adaptor and it came preprogramed for my model alpine. and after ya wire it up theres nothing else to do...
you can wire up a kill switch inline with the bypass so you can turn it off if your area has some type of inspection or if i cop pulls ya over just flip the switch really quick... and the video will go off...
and with my alpine unit you can turn the radios monitor OFF at any time, but the monitor OUTPUT should still have a picture for the rear or where ever your other screen is. kinda cool feature... you can also listen to the radio and watch the video from the dvd......
tho i dont have anymore monitors in my 99civic. not worth it to me since my monitor is in the front middle so everyone can see it good enough ;)
only thing im NOT SURE ABOUT is if the rear monitor output will have a audio either... i dont think you can listen to the radio and the audio from the dvd at the same time...
just search ebay... my video bypass was pretty cheap... i think only like 30bucks.. you could do it with just afew switches grounded BUT thats a PITA every time ya want to see the video... just be sure its a PAC (http://cgi.ebay.com/Pac-TR-7-Alpine-Video-Bypass-IVA-W505-IVA-D106-IVA-W200_W0QQitemZ180233074782QQihZ008QQcategoryZ67771 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) these are the best brand name bypasses
T3rry 04-15-2008, 08:05 PM i don't want to do a video bypass, i just want it to display in the output while I'm driving.
basbal123 04-16-2008, 06:22 AM i dont think you can do that like you can get a little portable dvd that will hook up to it but i dont think you can only have the output work
addiction2bass 04-16-2008, 07:08 AM well if ya just want it in the back for the kids why not only spend 200bucks get two 5-6inch screens with a dvd player? i think those units also have headphones. that way you can still listen to what you want to listen to in the front.....
i just dont see why you want to spend 1K bucks just for video in the back seat.......
07blksi 04-16-2008, 09:51 AM The ivaw-200 can be had easily to be able to output while driving. Where I work the installers do it all the time (I mean they dont do that because its illegal).
I am not sure if this is in your budget but the AVICZ1 is now pretty cheap compared to when it was new. It has a built in hard drive and NAV. you can buy a software update for like $250 that will make it basically a Z3. The problem with this unit, it is a little more of a pain to get it set up to display video when not in park.
addiction2bass 04-16-2008, 10:25 AM just buy a PAC bypass unit off ebay. afew wires and your golden! gont ghetto it up... its 30bucks thats it.... if you can wire up the harness adaptor to your new radio and plug that into your stock harness than thats all ya need.....
its not complicated at all!

i just dont see why you want to spend 1K bucks just for video in the back seat.......
because i have a ceiling mount monitor, so i want to have it all look OEM, or at least VERY clean.
addiction2bass 04-16-2008, 03:51 PM then how about a dvd player under the front seats.....
just an idea....
