ok for all you 6th gen guys, yes the d17 sucks stock. but yes you can turbo it for some pretty amazing numbers. building the engine N/A does absolutely nothing. the cost v. gain is just too lop-sided. you pour money into it and dont really get much, but building the motor after a turbo is a different story. the stock motor can handle 200 hp daily driven without a problem as long as its tuned well. a k swap, while by far the better performance option, is really really expensive. its around 5k for the parts alone not including the engine and trans or labor. my turbo parts pile is a boost gauge short of complete and i'm in it for $2372. my original plan was to swap, but geez 8k is a lot of money. quote:
Dont go with a piggy back unit. Theyre garbage and fool the ecu into thinking things. Use hondata or somethin of that sort sure piggy-backs arent as good as a stand-alone but they do work, and work well if tuned properly. second hondata makes absolutely nothing for the d17. however they do make k-pro for the rsx and you can use an rsx ecu and get it converted to k-pro and use it for the d17.

^^ and i never said you did say the d17 couldnt make numbers, but a few others were certainly implying it. you said build it first right. i'm just saying, you cant build the d17 right. if you build it n/a it isnt worth it. and you cant really build too much for turbo before you go turbo. you cant really do turbo cams and pistons and rods and stuff without the turbo, the engine will run funny. i'm also not saying stand-alones aren't better, but piggy-backs do work depending on the setup. i guess i should rephrase. if your long term goals are serious numbers, a full engine build, and a crazy turbo setup, then wait and get the ems or k-pro now so you dont waste money on a piggy back. but for a daily driven milder turbo setup, a piggy-back will work. sure not the best, but it will work. i'm using pretty much a dezod kit with a few custom touches

yes... he did... so its possible for it to run fine with turbo internals, my bad, i'm not perfect, but the point is still valid. it still costs thousands for all that engine building and the numbers dont really pan out till you turbo it to take advantage of all those shiny new parts. unless you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are going to build your engine to that extent and go for over 300 horsepower it isnt worth the money to build first. if you turbo it first you already have that extra hp, and you can decide to build it later if you want more hp. but enough arguing... sorry to jack your thread.... good luck with the turbo build
